Running Accomplishments:

Best marathon: 2:23:57 (2007, St. George). Won the Top of Utah Marathon twice (2003,2004). Won the USATF LDR circuit in Utah in 2006.

Draper Days 5 K 15:37 (2004)

Did not know this until June 2012, but it turned out that I've been running with spina bifida occulta in L-4 vertebra my entire life, which explains the odd looking form, struggles with the top end speed, and the poor running economy (cannot break 16:00 in 5 K without pushing the VO2 max past 75).  

 

Short-Term Running Goals:

Qualify for the US Olympic Trials. With the standard of 2:19 on courses with the elevation drop not exceeding 450 feet this is impossible unless I find an uncanny way to compensate for the L-4 defect with my muscles. But I believe in miracles.

Long-Term Running Goals:

2:08 in the marathon. Become a world-class marathoner. This is impossible unless I find a way to fill the hole in L-4 and make it act healthy either by growing the bone or by inserting something artificial that is as good as the bone without breaking anything important around it. Science does not know how to do that yet, so it will take a miracle. But I believe in miracles.

Personal:

I was born in 1973. Grew up in Moscow, Russia. Started running in 1984 and so far have never missed more than 3 consecutive days. Joined the LDS Church in 1992, and came to Provo, Utah in 1993 to attend BYU. Served an LDS mission from 1994-96 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Got married soon after I got back. My wife Sarah and I are parents of eleven children: Benjamin, Jenny, Julia, Joseph, Jacob, William, Stephen, Matthew,  Mary,  Bella.  and Leigha. We home school our children.

I am a software engineer/computer programmer/hacker whatever you want to call it, and I am currently working for RedX. Aside from the Fast Running Blog, I have another project to create a device that is a good friend for a fast runner. I called it Fast Running Friend.

Jacob did a mile time trial on the track, and ran a small PR of 5:13.9 splits of 78, 77, 80, 76. Benjamin paced him. I ran the first 1009 meters, and the last 200.

Matthew did 400 in 80.6.

William tried to run the last 800 with Jacob, but could not keep up, and ran something along the lines of 2:50.

Total of 12. Matthew ran a mile PR on the track - 6:20.1. Splits 91, 97, 99, 91. He keeps breaking hard drives on his laptop, so I told him he could get an SSD drive (which I hope will not break as easily) if he ran 6:20, and he did just that.

Then I added a couple of pickups in the middle of the run for the rest of the distance. Again, struggles generating adrenaline. The pattern seems to be that I can find some for a surge, but cannot generate a steady flow to keep the pace.

Jenny ran 5:47 mile down the canyon, Stephen 5:54, which is his course PR. Might be a PR, if not, then very close, for Jenny.

Benjamin did 2x3 down 10:02, up 11:26, down 9:48. The downs went OK, but he had struggles generating power on the up. I was his rabbit on the last one starting 2 minutes ahead and running as close to 6:00 as possible. He caught me with a bit more than 0.125 left, and I was able to keep up with him, and run the last 0.125 in 36.

Then we rested a bit, and he paced me through an uphill mile in 5:54. I just had to prove to myself that I can still run sub-6:00 uphill.

Analysis:

Benjamin - a bit slower than last time, but expected due to his lack of workouts lately as he was recovering from the injury. Splits 4:48, 4:57, 4:54.

Joseph - small improvement. Splits 5:31, 5:38, 5:37.

Jacob - also small improvement. Splits 5:31, 5:38, 5:41.

Dad - by a miracle managed to improve and crack 17:30. Splits 5:31, 5:38, 5:42.

William - improved by 25 seconds from a month ago. I think mainly by getting mentally tougher. Splits 5:57, 6:03, 5:53.

Jenny - improved by 18 seconds in spite of a falling accident two days prior and scraping her knees badly. The day before she could barely run a sub-8:00 mile, so this run really took a lot of grit on her part.

Stephen - improved by 24 seconds. Not sure what his splits were exactly, but he was roughly 6:30 in the first mile, then slowed down to about 7:00, and kicked around 6:35 in the last mile responding to a threat of hard-charging Matthew behind him.

Matthew - improved by 16 seconds. Splits 6:45, 6:51, 6:40. I was very happy with how he held it together, and closed in the last mile.

Julia - improved by 2 seconds. She ran the first mile with me and Matthew in 6:45, then slowed down to about 7:40 pace. I was happy that she found 6:45 in her, and lived to run another 2 miles after that.

Sarah - improved by 1:01 from last time, and was able to average sub-8:00. I was very happy with this improvement. Quite remarkable for a 44 year old mother of 11.

The plan was to run the first mile with everybody, Jenny and Stephen being done after it, then have William kick for the next mile, and then have me, Joseph, and Jacob kick at whatever we could do for the last mile. It went according to plan for the first mile, but then William checked out. We ran the next mile maintaining 6:00 pace, and then kicked. I was able to kick in 5:34, Jacob got 5:32, Joseph 5:31.

He got there 4 second under, but just as a matter of principle, I decided to give it a good push in the last mile and ran 5:37 for 17:24 total.

Did 2x2 down the canyon with Joseph and Jacob. In the first we paced Jenny to 12:04. Stephen kept up with us until about a quarter to go, then dropped back. William was supposed to run all of with us, but he was having a doubtful attitude, dropped back, and then never caught up, for which he earned a removal of treat privileges until he does a redemption workout.

Faced with the terrible consequences of having to live without treats until Monday, he decided to do a redemption workout that night. He argued that he possibly could not run 2 miles in 12 minutes down the canyon, and asked what time he would have to run if he went for only 1.25. I told him 5:36 split at the mile, then an honest effort to the finish. He split 5:35, then closed in 87 and got 7:01 restoring his privileges.

Benjamin did 3x2 alternating down and up - 10:02, 10:57, 9:52.

Total of 16. Did 2x2 down the canyon with Joseph. Jacob did easy 4, his foot is still hurting. On the first one, we started with Jenny, Matthew, Stephen, and William. William had a challenge to break 12:00 off whatever Matthew would be able to hold for the first mile. Matthew got us there in 6:12. Then William shifted gears and ran 5:45. There was some significant amount of grumbling and self doubt at the start - he said there is no way he would be able to close fast enough, but when I promised him a popsicle for trying upgraded to Luna bar for succeeding, he found 5:45 in himself for the second mile. Jenny and Stephen just ran 1 mile and then ran easy for the rest of their distance.

Joseph and I did the second interval in 11:56 (6:01, 5:55).

Benjamin did 2x3, uphill in 17:08, then down in 15:08. He had a good start in the last one with 9:55 at 2 miles, but then the heat got to him and he slowed down to 5:13. It was 80F+ by the time of his second interval.

Jenny is getting married to Nate Walker on Aug 14 in the Provo City Center Temple.
