Triathlons are my New sport and I LOVE IT

Recent last few years  as I havent done much since I was 16/17yrs, on and off injuries, going out with Friends started. Operations on injuries- compartment syndrome front of the shin had small operation to release the pressure on the fascia.

Oct 2007.  Did the great north run.  ( I was in the elite ladies race, against Kara Goucher and Paula Radcliffe, Im sure u Americans will recall that race).

I was just in on my previous times from the Bath Half Marathon. I ran it as best as I could off my training & circumstances...

Decided to do my 1st Marathon with London looming in the following April I was in the ladies Elite race again.  So the training was on.  I realise now I didnt give my body enough time to recover as it did break down in the last 5 weeks of my training. Injury bound, with calf and hamstring problems I raced!

London Marathon, April 08 (Injury calf issues) 1st marathon  3hrs.12mins .30 secs

Dublin Marathon  Oct 08  3hrs.01mins.13  undulating and 1 toilet stuck/stop (LOL)

Bath Half 2007    1.26.35 hrs

Wilmslow half marathon english champs    1.25.39

18th lady  (With piriformis injury ).

Liverpool 10k 2008 Oct 37.42mins midst marathon training

Wirral 5k 2009 17.41mins off the back off marathon week

Track 3000ms 10.45mins  hmmm I ran this to get points for my club so I just did tactical and ran on 1st lady shoulder and sprinted at the end !

pbs aged 13 yrs old

800ms 2mins 16secs

1500ms 4mins 48 secs

high jump 1metre 53  (cant do this now) and I never trained for it as a kid, just competed alot for points for my club, usually spend 2 hours highjumping, and skip off to do an 800 or 1500ms race then go back to high jump, Wish I took the running more seriously!

Okay to get things into perspective, I cant run more than 3.5 miles at 8 min pace without my hammy hurting.....

I am seriously thinking of pulling out of the Marathon.

1. I dont want to end up seriously injured and have months out!

 2. I dont want to go into it knowing I am not going to pb!

3. I can keep decent fitness and do some shorter races near the end of the year, and plan my next marathon build up.

Another thing is that 2.5 years ago I was doing 30/35 miles a week, I have done 30 miles this week with injury maybe not good running but I have done that, so really I am looking at this as a good thing in some ways albeit that the 30.35 miles I did do was all quality!

On this, I went out didnt go swimming at 8am, but did go at 11am, had a sleep in till 9am, which is late for me, I may not like 6am mornings but I dont like being in bed later than 9.

200 lengths 1hr 32 mins, I didnt stop like last time for a rest at 100 and 150, I kept going although I did slow down allot in the last 50 lengths.  Some fast swimmers decided to trample me down during my 80-150 lengths which was annoying, they were doing say 10 lengths hard then resting, lap me a few times then rest, Id catch the laps up, urggghhhh! I know I know, they must have been doing swim reps but it was annoying as I was feeling it today.

Had my free Coffeeeeeee hmmmm then got my hair done yay, and off out tonight with some friends a local pub has been done up and we are going to see if its any good :-)

i am sorry to hear that you may have to pull out of the marathon, but i think you have a good perspective. it is never fun if you go into a race feeling unprepared, or even worse feeling injured. you have done a lot of quality training this year with excellent mileage. you have a solid base that will carry you through this "training lull".

and as you mentioned, sometimes it's better to back off, run less, re-direct your goals, etc. and maintain fitness at a lower level rather than risking it all and being out for months. then you would have to start all over again.

listen to what your body is telling you...maybe in a week or two you will feel like you can still give the marathon a go...you just never know.

sorry i am done rambling. good luck with whatever happens. it will all work out.

oh, and NICE 200 lengths in the pool. i must pay you a compliment...you're an animal!! :)

I agree with Allie, based on what you are able to do right now, trying to push to get ready for Berlin would be difficult and likely lead to injury. Focus on the long term (London 2010!) ang get yourself healthy.

Best wishes in getting over this nagging hammy injury.

Sounds like a good idea, sort out (and find the cause) of these injury problems and shoot for London next year.

I don't think there's much point doing Berlin if you know you are not ready as you won't really get anything out of it.

Free coffee is good! :)

Allie, thanks, yeah 200 lengths drains me like a long run, mentally and physically its hard but good fitness.

Jeff, I agree totally, I am actually feeling allot better mentally knowing I am not doing it now, I knew deep down its real stupid to go into it unprepared, I did that on my 1st Marathon London and I must say that was the hardest run I have ever done, actually the hardest thing I have ever done, it took me 4 weeks to get over it mentally!

Chris hhhhmmmmmmmm free coffeeeeeee!

Okay everyone, I am going to go enter London which I can do through the champion race, from my Dublin time I will be in automatically, and London actually, my London time I have automatic entry for 2 years from when I did it.
