It was a great day for the Burgener Family runners. Doone, Chase (10), Cade (5), and I all went to the local 5K Turkey Trot on a beautiful Saturday morning. It was sunny with a light breeze and about 65 degrees at race time. I warmed up for a mile, did some active stretching and the then a few strides to get the legs ready for the quick first mile I knew was coming. We lined up and I had my game face on. After sizing up the competition, I knew I had no hope at first or second. Three other runners there were my competition for 3rd. One of them, an 18 year old (Maliki) who beat me last year; one a 40+ year old (Chris) who I beat coming up the final hill last year, and the other a 40+ year old (Kerry) who I beat 3 weeks ago coming up the final hill.

We were off and the early pace was fast as expected. The to fast guys were out to a quick lead the other 4 of us were running together with Maliki leading the pack for the first 1/2 mile. Then Chris moved to the front of the pack and I went with him. Soon we dropped Maliki and Kerry. We hit the first mile at 5:13. I thought oh boy that is too fast, but I was feeling good, so I went with it. Right after we hit the first mile Chris dropped the pace even faster and I decided to let him go, hoping to be able to catch him going up the steep hill on the last mile. We hit the turn around around 8:40 and he had about 100 yards on me. The was a pretty stiff headwind once we turned around and I was regretting the decision to let him get ahead of me. I really could have used him to block the wind. Heading back to the 2 mile mark he picked up another 100 yards on me which mentally crushed me. Mile 2 was 6:17, so I was right at 11:30 after 2, but I had a serious climb coming and was running into a decent wind and my legs were getting heavy. It was just too far of a gap to really let myself push hard and try and get him. He was fading at the same rate I was, but I couldn't pick it up. I ran a disappointing 3rd mile in 7:13 and my only focus now was keeping Maliki and Kerry from catching me. I was too tired to look back so I just tried to keep pushing. Little did I know that were almost a full minute behind. That early pace really hurt them bad and they were way off their normal 5k time. I finished the last 0.1 with a 6:51 pace up that final incline to finish 4th overall and 2nd in my AG with a disappointing time of 19:22.

I then grabbed the camera and headed out in search of Cade to help him finish. I ran out passing Doone and Chase and finally found Cade a little mor than a mile out. He had run all the way to the turnarouond but was tired and walking back. I helped encourage him and keep him going until we got to the end where everyone was cheering the little guy in. He was tired, but happy to be done.

Doone got second in her AG

Chase 3rd in his AG

Cade received and award for being the youngest runner and was so excited.

It was way cool to be there with most of the family and everyone getting awards.

First of all----what a fun family event! You all did a great job. I am impressed with the 5 year old, WOW!!!

Sorry you were disappointed with the time. It stinks when a race gets to you mentally, we all get that feeling! Today just was not your day for whatever reason (although I am way impressed with your time).

You're going to have to add a new trophy room to the house! Welcome back to your old speedy self. I see sub 3:00 at Boston!

What an AWESOME running family and what a fun running event for y'all!

SO VERY COOL that you all got awards. CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Sorry you were disappointed with your performance! Your time and speed was AWESOME! I'm very PROUD of you!!!

From Teena on Sun, Nov 22, 2009 at 00:45:42 from 174.52.45.85

WOW!!!

Seriously, how cool is that? Your family must totally rock!! Well ... of course they do!!! :)

Congrats to all of you, especially little Cade. Honestly, that is just so impressive.

Have NO idea how you run those hills so fast. Sorry you are a bit disappointed with your time, but MAN ALIVE ... so stinkin' fast!!! And the joy you must have felt seeing Doone, Chase, and Cade surely was priceless.

A HUGE CONGRATS TO THE BURGENERS!!!! :) :) :)

Awesome Job Rhett. That first mile was a screamer. You did awesome man. Sorry it wasn't what you had hoped for. Those first miles can really make you pay later. And the uphill climb at the end. Talk about tough.

Congrats to you and your family taken all the AG awards.:)

Holy smokes Rhett. 5:13? Not bad. I think I could have stayed up with you in that last mile. That's about it.

From Rhett on Sun, Nov 22, 2009 at 18:13:33 from 216.67.216.176

Kelli, thanks. I hope I didn't sound like I was too bummed about my time, but I felt like I had given an effort faster than that and was surprised when I saw my final time.

Marc, that's the goal. I hope to prepare to get that sub 3 at Boston. My foot isn't 100%, but it doesn't seem to affect me while running.

Kathie, thanks. All the family was excited. That was Doone's first time to place in her AG. She was talking all day about how she can do better next time.

Smooth, yep running with the family is the best. Now I just have to get Tally and Lane in on the act.

Teena, Cade was the cutest little guy ever out there. He is just a little natural. Probably a lot like Sophia. I could have had the worst run ever and it still would have been a great day watching him.

Mark, yeah, that last mile is about a 400 ft climb and it really gets the legs all tied up in knots.

Burt, I checked all day yesterday and now today and I am still anxiously awaiting a race report from you. Spill the beans already!

Sorry the race didn't turn out the way you wanted. Sounds like you ran great on a tough course.

From DonGardinero on Mon, Nov 23, 2009 at 12:17:31 from 75.162.169.35

Congratulations to all of you. Sorry the time was disappointing, but I think you ran amazingly.

Rhett,

It was a pleasure racing against you again. I hope you can come and compete in Kingman on Thursday!

My plan is to race my own race - I will be there at the end to challenge you :)

I am excited about this site. Given this is my 2nd year running (coming from cycling - road and cyclocross racing), this site will be a wealth of info and support.

From Rhett on Mon, Nov 23, 2009 at 18:28:28 from 74.42.168.210

Kerry,

Do you have your own blog set up? This is a great place to blog your runs and get feed back from runners of all different levels. I love the shoe tracker as well. I hope to see your blog up here soon.

I don't think I'll up there on Thursday. My wife wants me around to help out with the festivities. I really would love to race you guys again though. Keep me informed on other Kingman races.

From Kerry Herbine on Tue, Nov 24, 2009 at 13:48:01 from 65.73.204.62

just got my blog up and running...

I'll keep you informed of other races.

Hope to see you soon!

Kerry

And great job to the kiddies!
