2:00pm

The rain stopped before the race today, but it was still very windy and cold. Kym decided not to run and waited in the car until the end when she came out to see me cross the finish line. The first mile went by pretty quick with only one slippery spot on the course. It was a sharp corner covered with about 6 inches of loose, wet gravel.  The second mile was brutal running against the wind and dodging mud holes, my lungs were really burning. Just as I was thinking about quitting, the course turned onto a short stretch of pavement where I didn't have to think about my footing so much and even had the wind at my back for a minute. I caught my breath, but I was still really tired and struggled to keep pushing. Mile three was a return trip on the first mile so I knew what to expect and didn't get messed up by the gravel corner. I don't know where I got the sprint at the end, I guess I just wanted it to be over.

I finished 7th overall, 1st in my age group(40-45) and won an 18lb turkey. I also beat my previous 5k PR by 1:04.

Wow...sweet kick at the end!

Awesome race! 5Ks can be such torture. Great job.

Great race. Congrats on getting a new PR and a turkey.

rockness18 - Thanks, I think there might be something amiss with the pace calculation on that last .1 though. It just doesn't seem possible for an old guy like me. I do know the course was accurate this time though :)

Snoqualmie - Thanks, and torture is right. I used to like 5ks until I realized how hard I could actually push myself for that distance.

Twinkies - Thanks, hopefully they will both be history very soon :)

Congratulations on a huge PR and breaking 20:00 for the first time!

From rattletrap on Mon, Nov 23, 2009 at 15:25:42 from 75.216.126.67

Thanks Sasha, I'm hopeful that sub 19 is right around the corner.

From Burt on Mon, Nov 23, 2009 at 17:38:25 from 12.231.112.98

RT - it looks like you ran this race perfectly. You didn't slow down too much in the second mile, and you even sped up the last mile. Great job.

From rattletrap on Mon, Nov 23, 2009 at 19:29:58 from 75.216.56.184

Burt - Anything I did right was purely by accident. I had no plan other than to run my butt off and during the second mile I felt like I had done just that because as the saying goes, I was dragging it! I still can't figure out how I did so well in such bad conditions.

Congratulations on the AG and PR! Nicely done.

Wow what a PR! That is awesome! I don't think I would so as well in those conditions..I can't believe the weather was so yuck even at 2pm!

From Sasha Pachev on Tue, Nov 24, 2009 at 12:47:41 from 192.168.1.1

Mike - being able to go 5:17 pace in the kick is nothing abnormal for a sub-20:00 5 K guy regardless of age.

If you are still doubting, go to the track, get a good warm-up and run an all out 200 (half a lap, you should see the marks where it starts). You'll probably hit in in around 32-33 seconds, which is about 4:20-4:30 pace. Do not do it, though, if you feel even the slightest hint of injury because top end speeds are just about as unsafe on foot as they are on a motorcycle. If you have a loose bolt somewhere, something will fall off when you hit 120 mph.

From rattletrap on Tue, Nov 24, 2009 at 13:47:08 from 75.216.118.60

Sasha - I think I'll skip the track and just take your word for it. I will also keep your advice in mind both on foot and on the road :)
