10 miles at GMP to see what my avg. heart rate is at that pace. It took more effort than usual to maintain that pace. I have lost some fitness for sure, along with what little ability I had to regulate my pace. I was constantly watching the garmin and trying to make adjustments. My leg felt fine while I was running, but was pretty sore soon after I finished. An ice bath afterward, followed by a hot shower and a heating pad helped quite a bit.

Pace 7:34

Avg. HR 187

8.00    8:01    194 more uphill... this is getting old. I was asking myself how I ever did this 5 days a week?

4:30pm

I went to the Y and spent 99 minutes on the Rex machine again doing what felt like a 20k race effort with my legs, but my average HR was only 156. I got it into the 170's once or twice, but my legs just didn't have it in them to keep it there for long. I tried hills, less resistance, more speed, etc. My heart seems to be stronger than my quads. I don't get it. I am really going all out on this thing and my heart is like yawning and asking when the work is going to start. Running seems so much easier, yet my HR is so much higher when running, it doesn't make sense. I tried to get manual mile splits on the garmin, but they didn't show up when I downloaded the workout. Rex said I went 14 miles... ...yeah right. I'll keep doing this, but I'm not counting the miles anymore.

Avg. HR 156

The pug mile! LOL! Intensity via ankle biters. The thing is, it's the owners who should be kicked. Great running!

pug encounter! so scary! nice job on your run today. i am happy to see you are running again. 2 weeks to go!

From Eric Day on Sun, Jun 14, 2009 at 21:09:50 from 189.169.179.234

Rattletrap, wanted to mention that I think your HR is a little high. Just be careful please.

From rattletrap on Sun, Jun 14, 2009 at 22:38:26 from 24.19.93.139

Eric - Thanks. It was high even though my max heart rate is a little above average. This is a very challenging course and my goal was to see just how high my HR was while running at GMP. Doing it on a difficult course gave me a worst case scenario to weigh my cross training against. Slacking off for two weeks has really taken it's toll. I'm guessing that my HR was probably about 10 lower on the same run a couple weeks ago. Interestingly, I was still able to hold a decent conversation with Jared on mile 5.

I guess as long as you feel comfortable, it should be fine. take care.

That is a lot of working out for one day. Don't over do it! And nice miles!

From rattletrap on Mon, Jun 15, 2009 at 15:39:03 from 70.192.19.233

April - It was a big day, but the run in the morning was mainly to get my HR for reference on the REX machine. I was anxious all day to get to the Y and see what my HR was on the REX. Sadly, it was not what I expected...

You have not been a slacker for two weeks! You just need to take care of that injury and you have been.

I am still sorry about that injury and it bums me out that it is still bothering you. But I do have to say that I felt encouraged myself to read: "this is getting old. I was asking myself how I ever did this 5 days a week?" I thought I was the only one that ever experienced that feeling. SO THANKS for sharing that with me, now I know I am not alone!!!

From Snoqualmie on Tue, Jun 16, 2009 at 11:14:48 from 67.171.56.164

Kelli - More by way of encouragement than criticism, I would submit that this is NOT the inevitable result of aging. :) For one thing, there is what I consider to be an epidemic level of mind-body chronic pain syndromes, and then there is also some consideration of what I linked on my Tuesday blog entry. Be well, everyone! It's *natural*.

From Kelli on Tue, Jun 16, 2009 at 11:58:48 from 71.219.76.64

True enough! I hope to only get better and faster as I age, just good to know I am not the only one who has a day (or days) where running is juts getting on my nerves and I want to be DONE!!! Sometimes I feel all alone in my misery.

From rattletrap on Tue, Jun 16, 2009 at 13:00:45 from 70.193.250.208

I wasn't saying that "I" was getting old; it was trying to run up what seemed to be an endless hill at MP that was getting old :) That hill did not seem so big a couple weeks ago.

From Snoqualmie on Tue, Jun 16, 2009 at 13:16:49 from 67.171.56.164

Sorry. I guess I never pass up a chance to affirm running success for my generation! ;)

From Kelli on Tue, Jun 16, 2009 at 13:54:37 from 71.219.76.64

I got it (I think I confused Sno when I took it out of context).

And that there is my point---I am sorry you had a rough time, but it made me feel a wee bit better because hills and sprints and running in general sometimes just get old!!

We are all young.

From Burt on Tue, Jun 16, 2009 at 15:15:11 from 68.76.197.194

Rattletrap, you're a grandfather. How can you not consider yourself old?? LOL!

From rattletrap on Tue, Jun 16, 2009 at 18:19:55 from 70.193.250.208

Burt - I am indeed a grandpa, but I refuse to get old or even grow up. How many grandpas do you know that can ride a waveboard/ripstick or kick a hacky-sack?

From Kelli on Tue, Jun 16, 2009 at 20:20:49 from 71.219.76.64

Does red hair go grey?

From Burt on Tue, Jun 16, 2009 at 22:01:14 from 98.167.151.26

I can't even do any of those. Plus you run faster than 99% of all the grandpas in the world.
