No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.

Kym is Judging a speech and debate tournament at Linfield College so I came down with her for the weekend. Free hotel, hot tub, continental breakfast, peace and quiet :)
I went out for a nice run with no distance goals in mind, I just wanted to explore the area. It was 40° and sunny when I left the hotel. I ran around a great woodchip trail covered with a thick bed of leaves at Joe Dancer Park, then through town and out some nice quiet twisty roads. When I circled back towards the hotel I realized that I had been running with the wind at my back and some thick black clouds had been moving in behind me. Within a few minutes it was raining and hailing pretty hard and somehow I missed a turn that added several miles to my route. Eventually after asking someone for directions I found my way back into town and loitered inside the Les Schwab tire store feasting on free popcorn and hot coffee until I could feel all my fingers again.(Thanks Les!) I was only a couple miles away from the hotel at this point, but it was still hailing and when my new friend Ralph offered to give me a ride I couldn't say no.

Great story, and great haiku! How did your foot handle the distance and the slower pace?

My foot wasn't any worse than usual, but my hip is giving me grief now. Still sore a day later. FWIW, I didn't really trip on a root :)

I think my hip pain is an injured hamstring. I can walk without a limp now, but it hurts so bad to stretch!

Free popcorn...that's always good!

I don't know how you go and run so many miles after being off for so long.

I've been using a foam roler on my side and hamstring. It really seems to be making a big difference...much better than trying to streatch my hamstring.

From DLTheo on Mon, Nov 19, 2012 at 11:42:11 from 155.130.107.20

Yes, the foam roller is the way to go. Do it after your runs, not before, because it causes the muscles to relax. If you own one it's great to use in the morning and before bed, too.
