After yesterdays run I started having the same pain in the same area of my leg where I was injured a couple of months ago, and as I am writing this the pain has not subsided. I know now that it is probably Shin Splints and not a stress fracture,  as the doctor said if it heals and then I have the same pain come back in the same area then it will rule it out ( the stress fracture). I don't know what to do, I am really down. I will Ice throughout the day to day and see if that helps and then see how it is on Monday... I felt pretty good yesterday other than my legs were dead tired and then as the day went on I could feel the pain starting to come on, and then my head started to hang because I know that pain well,  I delt with it for two long months. There is no mistaking it, the pain is the same as before, if anyone has any advise please feel free to enlighten me, I'll be sulking in the corner!!!!!!

Clay sorry to hear about the shin splints, hope it's just a very temporary thing. I haven't had problems with shin splints for years (luckily perhaps). Seems like back years ago when I did have shinsplints what helped me was to add a bit more cushion to my shoes by doubling up on insoles. Typically what I'll do is take insoles from some older running shoes and plop em into the new running shoes on top of the original insoles.

Tom, when do you retire a shoe, after how many miles? I alternate between two pairs and on one I have over 300 miles and on the other I have just over 200 miles...

Clay, I think what helped me the most with shin splints was to keep running but cut back the mileage and cut out all fast running for a month or two or three. I also massaged my shins and rolled my calfs aggresively each night before bed (hurt like heck but seemed to work). I also retire my shoes at 400 miles or so but I don't rotate them like you do. I've often thought I should but just haven't done it.

Sounds like you need a cut back week. Earlier in the week you were showing signs that you needed a little break and this confirms it. Did you ever determine what caused the stress fracture? If you didn't address the issue, it could be causing the shin splints. As far as shoes go, I try to get about 450 on a pair but can feel them break down at 400 miles.

A number of factors can lead to shinsplits - shoes, improper form, muscle imbalance, overpronation, etc. I agree with Andy and Jeff, time to just take it easy for a while. I see too much in you of what I did for years - get injured and then try to return too quickly, get injured again, rinse and repeat. That being said, perhaps you should consider looking at some of the above factors. Personally, I used to have major problems with shinsplits when I wore Asics shoes. They have certainly changed since then, but the shape of a shoe can cause your stride to be altered. I also don't put any more than about 400 miles on a pair of shoes to avoid risking injury, and have at least 2 pairs that I rotate. Perhaps something else you could do would be to go to a running center that offers a gait analysis as well as check your arches. It may be something as simple as wearing the wrong shoe for your feet or needing additional arch support. In any case, I feel your pain, Clay - I have been there many times before. Don't get too discouraged, and take it easy.

James, I have been talking to Superfly about moving into a Neutral shoe but I haven't got around to doing that yet. I have ran in Asics for along time and I have tried other shoes, Mizuno, Saucony but my feet always feel better in Asics... Clyde mention the Nimbus 9 as a possible choice for the nuetral shoe and I am planning on trying those to see how I do.

Thanks for the advice, and I do have a hard time with taking time off from running it drives me nuts, but like Andy said sometimes you just need a break...

Thanks Guys for the incouragement, my spirits are still pretty high.

Have a great New Year too!!!
