Well...I don't know what to say about this run. Since it was 20 miles (and I have only run 20 once before) I don't really have much to compare it to. I didn't get to run until after lunch and by that time it was 65 degrees with winds up to about 15 mph. I started out strong and though I could maintain but then hit the head wind. I wanted to maintain a 8:15 pace and did pretty well until my 13.1 mark...then it seemed to just fall apart. I didn't feel very good from this point on. I thought I could pick up my heart rate after about 10 miles and in turn pick up my pace but that was not the case. On the contrary my heart rate seem to go down but my effort went up. I was drinking gatorade (maybe not enough) and I had a couple of Gu packs along the way. I basiclly ran my loop (6.75 miles) three times...I realized when you run by your start/stop location a couple of times there's a real urge to just stop each time you go by that point..ha ha... After the run I was really drained, I got chilled immediatly and felt almost like I had the flu for a couple of hours. I felt pretty bad up until I went to bed. When I woke up this morning I was sore but went ahead to the gym and ran 5 slow recovery miles. I've got to figure out something different next time I run 20...this was too painful and I wasn't happy with my performance!

It could be a couple of things - like you said, it was only your second 20 mile run. You have only been running for a few months. It takes time to build up leg endurance to run long mileage runs. This will only come with mileage and over time. Think about how far 20 miles really is. Long runs should be run between 30-60 seconds slower than your marathon goal pace, too, unless you are doing a specific MGP training run.

Also, nutrition is another factor. Your body only has enough energy in the bank before its glycogen stores are depleted - this usally happens before 2 hours of running. And this is ONLY if your body is fully loaded to begin with. Depending on how you ate the day before and the morning of will affect your run. Once out of glycogen stores your body starts to try to convert fat to energy. This is not as an efficient process. The body becomes more efficient with practice, again - running many of these runs - but still it is not the best means of energy conversion. I think you need something like 200-300 calories an hour during runs like these. From the splits I would say you started out too fast, burnt through your glycogen stores, and slowed down from there. That is probably why you did not feel good the rest of the day, either. I have been there. And because you don't feel well you don't eat - which is the opposite of what your body really needs. Well, you probably know this already.

In the end, I wish I could have run an 8:30 average pace 20 miler after only 5 months of when I started running regularly. It probably took me well over a year to get to that point. I think you are a natural at this stuff.

Thanks Der Hammer,

I'm sure you're right about everything. I did start out too fast. Also I ran my hilly route and it was very windy...I had a hard time even trying to set a consistant pace. I also knew my nutrition was not right, I had eaten too much too soon to my run...also it probably wasn't the right things. The cool thing about running is I always think I can do better...! Thanks again for the good advise and encouragment!
