The SJ 10K is a small race because it's on the same day as the SLC Marathon & half. I thought I'd have a good chance of making the top 3 even without a proper taper. My real goal is the Ogden marathon so this was just a nice way to see what kind of shape I'm in.
I ran from home to the starting line which was 6 miles. By the time I got there my legs weren't as fresh as I'd like. To do this race justice I'd have to taper better. It didn't rain the whole way to the race. It was about 45' and a little windy. I arrived with about 8 minutes till the race started
Right as the race got going it started to sprinkle and it kept it up for about 2 miles then stopped. The race didn't have a gun they just had a countdown and said GO. I immediatly followed a guy that looked my age (Steve Whitney). He took off at about the perfect pace. My legs didn't want to race for about the first half mile but then they got in the grove and I passed Steve and continued to put space between me and him the rest of the race. I ended up beating him by two minutes. Mile 3 has a big hill in it and mile 4 goes over the switch back overpass.
I didn't find that killer race gear the last few miles. It started raining the last two miles and going down the hill the wind was blowing against and I had a big led so I just mantained the pace in. I should have been near 6 minute even on those last couple of miles. My garmin said 6.11 miles for the race. I hope it was reading low and the course was really 6.2.
