Would have done the extra .2 mile loop right by my house but I realized right as I was almost home that the garbage man was going to come by my house momentarily and my garbages weren't out, so I ran home and put them out just in time.

Enjoyed the new playlist this morning.  I swear, Regina Spektor and Kate Nash must be sisters or something.  Their voices sound very similar and their styles are similar too.  Actually Regina is a little more vague in her writing than Kate.  Both great musicians though.

I was thinking I would cross train today because my right foot was hurting pretty badly last night and this morning.  Felt sorta like it was misaligned similar to when I have a kink in my neck, only it was a kink in my ankle. Anyone else ever get this?  I get it about once a month.  Maybe its time for a chiropractic visit.

By the time I got to the gym (after getting the kids breakfast, dressed, hair brushed, diaper changed, shoes tied AND picking up and vacumming the entire house and cleaning the kitchen) it was 10 AM and the kink in my ankle had relaxed quite a bit so I decided to do a short, easy run.  Went an extra .2 mile to make up for the .2 I skipped out on yesterday so as to keep my weekly mileage neat and pretty.  LOL  Gotta love anal mileage moments.  That is actually a good sign for me because it means I'm starting to care what my mileage is again (I haven't cared for a good 2 months or more).

Beautiful early Saturday run on the Big Dry Creek trail.  Saw a coyote and many bunnies.  Legs felt pretty good after about 5 miles.  I love it when I get into a rhythm and it feels the same to go 7:30 pace as it does to go 8:00 pace.

Had a nice quick visit from my SIL Ashley late last night through this morning.  She and her family are driving from their home in SLC to Dallas  to visit my other SIL Elisse.  They'll be coming back through Denver again next Thursday night on their way home.

Lately I've been noticing a variety of unique smells that add enjoyment to a run.  Someone's dryer vent blowing the smell of freshly cleaned laundry into the air.  The sweet, delicious smell from the doughnut bakery (which smells even better than it tastes.)  Someone's wood burning stove giving off that comfy campfire smell.  Freshly showered teenagers and their recently spritzed cologne.  The crisp air aroma of wet trees.

Sometimes a smell takes me back in time to another memory where I experienced the exact same smell.  Recently it was the smell of a wet, muddy trail that immediatly took me back almost 8 years when Aaron and I (just recently married) went to Lake Powell with friends.  We were camping on the beach in the middle of July and it had been raining lightly all night.  When we awoke and came out of our tent the sand was soaked and the smell of wet mud was peaceful and clean.

Wasn't sure what time Aaron came to bed last night, but I know it was after 2 a.m. so when I awoke at 6:15 a.m. and all three kids were already awake and it sounded like it was hailing outside I decided to just take the kids with me to the gym so Aaron could sleep a little longer and  I wouldn't be pelted on my run.

Ran on the TM, took it easy for the first 6 miles then just decided to bump up the pace to 7:08 pace for the last mile to see how my hip responded to a little pick-up.  Seemed to handle it fine.  Maybe I'll try a little more pace pushing later this week.

Fell into a black hole somewhere in my mind.  Felt really tired, emotionally drained, and no motivation to move my body at all.  Luckily, Aaron cast me a line and began belaying me out, but I still had a very tough day.  We did some P90X together (his new employee, Will let us borrow his copy) and it was a killer workout.  No running though.

7 miles in 8:05 pace.

Quick weekend get-away for me, starting today.  My Sister-in-laws, Elisse and Ashley (plus Ashley's kids) came through town on their drive back to SLC from Dallas and stayed with us one night. Elisse happened to be awake and ready to run when I came out of my room at 6:30 a.m. so she joined me for the first mile of my run but she decided to run around the pond and back home for three miles as I was off to get more mileage.  Beautiful weather!

After our run we ate breakfast, took the kids to the park for a bit, feed the kids lunch, cleaned up lunch, and joined our office staff, Shawna and Judy for the routine Friday Sushi take-out.  After Sushi, I tucked my girls in for naps, left the baby monitor with Shawna, (who watched the kids until my babysitter got there after school) and I left for Utah with Ash and Elisse.  I had purchased a one way flight home for Sunday morning so I join ALL the Kennard sisters for our beautiful, talented, youngest sister, Emily's baby shower on Saturday afternoon.

We left Denver at 1 p.m. and Ashley drove the first half.  After a quick stop in Wamsutter (I love the awesome name of that town) I volunteered to take the wheel and picked up the pace a bit to arrive at my Mom's new house in East Layton at 8:15 p.m.  Lots of fun, interesting, uplifting conversation on the drive followed by a nice visit with two of my siblings and their families until after midnight at Mom's.

7 a.m. run around my Mom's new neighborhood in East Layton with Mom at my side on her bike.  Went to Layton High School and ran around the park where I used to have high school Cross Country races.  Then back East to the roads above Mom's house to explore the area.  She lives in a nice neighborhood.  I like how there is a small farm with a rooster and some sheep a few doors down.

After breakfast my Mom took me to my SIL, Dawn's house to carpool to the Baby shower in Draper.  Lots of good food, creative gift giving, encouraging words to the soon to be Mom and an overwhelming amount of descriptive pregnancy, labor, and birth talk (of course, what would a Sister's baby shower be without that?!)

After the shower 4 of us did a little shopping together and had dinner at Nate and Chris' house in NSL.  Then we all met back up at Emily's house in Sandy to "pamper" her.  Ended up putting her crib together (after one trip to Home Depot), organizing all her baby clothes and items, cleaning the baby crib bedding and putting it all on, packing her hospital bag, and massaging her feet; all the while giving birthing and new Mom tips.  Emily is now ready to have her baby!  I am so grateful that I am a part of this awesome family of sisters who love and take such good care of each other.  It was so uplifting to spend the day with them with no needs or concerns of my own, knowing that my kids were at home being well taken care of by Aaron and feeling so grateful for the blessing of Family and service.

I just felt like going fast today since I haven't gone fast in a really long time.  My injury has been feeling a lot better over the past couple of weeks, yet a big lack of mental stamina has been holding me back.  But today I felt good enough and after my first warm-up mile there happened to be a slight downhill and a fast song come on my iPod at the same time which propelled me into a sub 6:00 pace for a good half mile.  After that song I still just kept going at 6:40-6:50 pace for the next 7 miles and loving the sweaty intensity of it.  I cooled down for the last mile and when I got home Aaron was finishing up his P90X workout so I joined him for some Ab-Ripper-X.  It was a nice end to my run.

Now I'm going to shower and go to the gym to push my pull-up, push-up, and sit-up fitness for Sam's challenge.  For those of you who haven't heard about it and/or want to join in, its 6 weeks to 200 sit-ups (slow crunches really), 20 pull-ups, and 100 push-ups.  Join in on the fun!  It will make you a faster runner!

UPDATE:

Went to the gym and did three sets of push-ups, pull-ups, and sit-ups.  Here's how many I could get:

Pull-ups:  10, 8, 8

Push-ups: 30, 25, 20

Sit-ups (actually I just do slow crunches): 85, 70, 70

Ran around Standley Lake with some added on in the neighborhood on the other side of the lake.  Don't you love it when you just get out the door and .23 mile into your run you realize you need to go to the bathroom?  I'm too stubborn to ever go back, so the next mile consists of scouting out a good spot to squat.  I finally found a good spot around 1.5 miles in and the rest of my run went much more comfortably.

My pu-pu-su workout today was super fun.  I decided to do what the website recommends (basically five random sets with last one to failure) and heres what went down:

Push Ups: 14, 18, 14, 14, 25

Pull Ups: 7, 6, 6, 8, 10

Sit Ups: 54, 60, 45, 36, 70

Also did a bunch of hip work, stretching, and foam roller.  Great workout!!

Decided I'd try running a couple of "fast" miles this morning, since I just committed to my Coach that I would start joining the team for interval workouts again next week; time to introduce my legs to speed again.

Warmed up 20 minutes, stretched, and did some strides.

One mile in 6:24 -felt okay actually (but it had some slight downhill that helped me out).

Jogged a half mile

One mile in 6:20-absolutely kicked my bum.  It was gradually uphill most of the way and had a very steep final .05 that gave me that gut wrenching, wanna puke feeling.  I had to walk afterwards.  As I was walking I thought to myself, "Did I really run a full marathon at 6:15 pace last fall?  Or was that just a dream?"  Well, if it did in fact happen and if I want to get back to that level of fitness, I have a LONG way to go.  Its a good thing I have all summer.

Felt good to do a short easy run.  Went to pilates reformer and got in some core work and stretching.  My 4 YO threw a horrible temper tantrum afterwards on the way to the car and ended up spending some time alone when we got home.  From my experience the "terrible two's" are nothing compared to the horrific four's.  I guess the tantrums come less often but when they do come, WATCH OUT.

I'll do my pu-pu-su workout later this afternoon/evening and update my post then.

Had a pleasant surprise yesterday when my friend, Callie told me that she and a few other friends from my ward were planning on running around Standley Lake this morning and I was invited to join them!  I suggested that we go out and back on the Big Dry Creek trail since the route around Standley Lake is mostly single track, and half of it is on road anyway.  So I joined them at 6:30 a.m. at the trailhead just .1 mile from my house.  They were planning on 10 miles, so I ran the first 5 with them and when they turned around I went another mile out on the trail and picked up the pace to try and catch them on the way back.  Ran mid-9:00 pace on the way out and low-7:00 pace on my way back.  Finally caught them one by one in the final two miles.  Callie was the last one I caught as we panted up the final hill to the parking lot.  She urged me to keep going so I ran home, grabbed 5 water bottles and walked back to the parking lot to stretch and hydrate with them.  It was so nice to have friends to chat with!  And the added bonus was that my Visiting Teaching partner and one of our Visiting Teachees were there and my partner had already read the lesson we were scheduled to discuss on Monday, so we just had some spiritual discussion during the first two miles and counted it!

Since I never got to my pu-pu-su workout last night, I did it this morning.

Push ups: 20, 25, 15, 15, 25

Sit ups: 60, 72, 54, 50, 70

Pull ups:  8, 8, 8, 6, 10

7:00 A.M. 4 miles in 8:07 pace  Nice and easy run in the misty morning

4:30 P.M. 8.5 miles in 7:45 pace

Met my Running Republic team in Boulder for intervals.  Only 8 of us were there. Coach Darren was still out of town after racing Boston yesterday so his wife, Colleen lead the workout.   It was pretty fun to be lead by a world class runner.  She is super nice and helpful too.  She is gearing up for a marathon in Europe at the end of May and a half-marathon in New York this Saturday.

20 minute warm-up, stretching, strides

4X45 seconds fast turnover/75 sec. easy (I didn't push my lap button on these)

2X(90 sec/2 min/90 sec) steady/hard with 60 sec easy (my pace was  6:22, 5:52, 6:12, 5:56, 6:01, 6:00)   Felt better on my groin to keep the pace at 6:00 or slower.

2 minutes between sets

5 minutes steady (6:21 pace)

20 minute cool down

The workout was pretty easy and I controlled my pace so my groin wouldn't be aggravated.  Felt great to be out running with the team again!

Trying to get in some solid mileage early in the week so I don't have to run as much Friday and Saturday while we are in Cali, going to Disneyland!!

The good news is that my first speed workout back with the group didn't aggravate the groin/adductor tightness at all.  It still feels the same as it has for about a month now which is about 90% healthy.  I decided to go see my ART guy, Richey today because I really would like it to feel 100%.  He forgot to bring in his Graston tools and I was actually kind-of relieved (Graston scraping HURTS!)  So he just did some very effective feeling Active Release on my adductor and hamstring, which was a good hurt.  I took my girls with me to the appointment and while Richey was working on my leg, my 1 yo proceeded to take things out of my bag and play with them.  At one point she unwrapped a tampon and tried to eat it (she does this all the time at home...I don't quite understand the fascination).  I just had to laugh it off and Richey thought it was funny too.  Upon leaving I made sure to pick up all the separated pieces of the tampon so as to not litter Richey's office with feminine hygiene products.

Busy morning.  Took Abe to his end of level reading test, got ready to leave, and flew to Orange County.  Arrived around 4 pm, took the kids to Laguna Beach and ate dinner.  The funniest part of the day was when the kids were feeding the pigeons and my 1 yo wondered what it was like to eat lie a pigeon, so she threw her food on the ground, leaned over, put her arms on the ground to support herself and bobbed her head down to lick up the piece of bread off the ground.  We all had a good laugh and kindly asked her not to do it again.

After that we met some friends on Aliso Beach a few miles south of Laguna, started a campfire and made smores.  As the sun was setting across the ocean we  were jumping off the sand ledge and running around on the beach chasing waves.  SO fun!

Ran on the Anaheim river trail.  Every time the trail went under a road, I noticed homeless people sleeping under the overpass.  Made me feel sorry for them, having to sleep on the cold hard ground.  Aaron and I just watched The Soloist last week and it made me realize how many people are homeless because of mental illness...so sad.  Its a great movie though.

Disneyland!  We were really grateful to find out that Aaron's step-brother, Darin could get us in for free since he is an singer/dancer in the Fantasmic show.  The day was pretty exhausting.  We actually came back to the hotel for a couple of hours to decompress and let the kids nap, then went back to the park until 8:30 p.m.  My favorite part was riding Pirates of the Caribbean at night.  The kids loved it!

Slept in and saved my energy for Disneyland.  It is A LOT of toting three young kids around Disneyland and California Adventure for two full days.  Our brother who got in for free was kind enough to stay for a few hours and help us rock the fast-pass system so we could get into more rides with minimal waiting.  It was great because we rode 5 rides with the older two kids while he stayed with our youngest.  The kids really loved the rides and we let them buy a souvenir too, which they loved.  By 6:00 p.m. I felt pretty drained, over-stimulated, and overwhelmed after 2 or 3 major melt-downs from each kid and just a long day in the sun, so I took our 1 yo to get the car while Aaron rode one last ride with our older two.  She cried the entire 30 minutes to the car then fell asleep the minute I had her in her car seat.  We went to the hotel and crashed.

I think the best part of Disneyland is the pictures, memories, and souvenirs.  Actually being there with the crowds and craziness is quite over-stimulating and draining.  The rides are fun, but I think next time (if there is a next time) Aaron or I will just take one child for a one-on-one weekend rather than toting the whole family through the park.  There is so much waste and gluttony there.  I'd rather just go camping and be in the peaceful wilderness.

Got home from Cali around 1 p.m. and there were still tarps everywhere and a bunch of workers cleaning up the mess after having our popcorn ceilings scraped and re-textured over the weekend.  I suspected this would happen.  The contractor thought he could have the job done in 2 days.  Sure enough, 3.5 days later he was not done.  Actually I was impressed they had gotten as far as they had.  It was a big job!

So upon finding ourselves tired and homeless, we called our good friends, the Stouts (family of 7 who stayed with us for 7 weeks last spring while they were finishing construction on their home).  They were happy to have us crash at their home and even fed us delicious food as soon as we walked in the door.  It was fun to catch up with them and the kids felt like it was an extension of our vacation because they LOVE playing with the five Stout kids. We heard all about their plan to move to Costa Rica for a year starting this July.  They are going to rent a small house on a 30 acre farm and learn Spanish, learn how to ride horses, learn to farm, and just experience an entirely different lifestyle.  We told them we'd come visit them in Costa Rica in December.

Ran with my friend Kristy and her running buddies.  Also did some stretching on her pilates reformer machine.  Came back home after breakfast and the house was actually pretty clean.  Still just a thin layer of white dust on a lot of things.  I vacuumed the entire house and wiped down a lot of nooks and crannies.  Also took a two hour nap while the girls were napping and Abe was at school.  Heavenly.  More cleaning, grocery shopping, and meal planning, family home evening, and then crashed in bed again.

6:15 a.m. Big fluffy snowflakes coming down the whole time.  Wore a baseball cap to keep the snow out of my eyes and had a good inch of snow build-up on the brim of my hat when I got home.  Snow was sticking to the grass but not the roads and trails.  By noon all the snow has already melted.

Wow, I am SO grateful to be feeling so great in my running right now.  My hamstring/adductor/hip problems seem to be pretty much completely gone and I'm keeping other aches and pains at bay with lots of stretching, core work, pilates reformer, and foam roller.  I've also been eating healthier and started taking more supplements after reading Suzy Favor-Hamilton's book "Fast Track."  I now take a handful of vitamins twice a day including Glutamine, MSM, Condroitin, Iron+Vit.C, Omega 3 Fish Oils, and a multi-vitamin.  I'm also eating more protein and less sugar.  I really agree with the logic in Suzy's book where she talks about eating clean, meaning foods that are unprocessed, low in fat/sugar, low GI, good quality protein, have lots of vitamins, ect.  But she urges you to give yourself a free meal every few days or a free day once week so you can keep your sanity and enjoy not so healthy food sometimes too.  She thinks that as long as you are a professional eater 85% of the time, you're doing great.  I really agree with that concept of allowing for some imperfect foods.  I do feel a ton better when I eat clean most of the time.
