Went to FAC after Bre's gymnastics class for a nice run on the treadmill.  I prefer to run outside 99.9% of the time, but the overnight 12"+ of snowfall and -5 degree low made the treadmill look quite enticing actually.  And I must admit, it was nice to run in shorts and a tank top because 'cmon when was the last time I got to do that?...oh wait, just a couple of days ago I raced outside in shorts and a tank top.  Crazy Colorado weather changes.  

Did an easy 8 with 7X30 second strides mixed into my run.  Felt GREAT!

After much demonstration and urging by my ART therapist, Richey as well as my husband, Aaron, I have finally gotten into the habit of doing a nice dynamic cool down routine after almost every run.  Its easier to do at FAC since they have this big stretching room with mats and a bar to hold on to while I do my hurdle trail leg moves and leg swings.  And I can leave the kids in child care the extra 10 minutes and get the routine done quickly.  At home it takes more discipline to get the routine in because it seems that whenever I walk in the door from a run I suddenly have three needy kids with urgent requests.  I must say though, dynamic stretching is FABULOUS for recovery and is WELL WORTH the extra investment of time. Here is a video of my friend Sara Vaughn doing the Cannonball Cool down.  GOOD STUFF.  Only problem is that watching this video is making me miss summertime in Boulder.

A couple of these are in my core workout. I wonder, though, if they ran the tape faster than real time? It seems like she is running through them really fast. I would think if you go a bit slower, paying attention to form, that you'd reduce the risk of this workout (there's some risk with these quick movements even at the end of a workout) and we can benefit even more from it. What do you think, Nan, now that you've done it?

Mama Vaughn BEFORE baby #2!! She is amazing. Have Jay & Richie converted you to myrtle yet? Jay's exercise progressions have been a lifesaver--great for injury prevention. Michelle, Sara is trying to really swing to exaggerate the range of motion in these exercises.

Burt-Yeah you are one to talk. I've seen your "epileptic" P90X sweat-fest fits. I personally think Sara makes this stuff look good.

Michelle-It looks like real time to me. Granted, she has been doing these exercises for a long time and is more advanced than me so mine may be a little slower. I agree that its good to focus on form and go at your own pace. My leg swings in particular are not as quick and I don't open up as much as Sara does. Maybe someday when I have gumby hips I'll get there.

Karen-Yeah, I do myrtle sometimes too. You know Jay and Richey? Do you do this stuff with your high school athletes?

Sam-Just a few more months and we'll have warmth again...I'm already looking forward to it.

For a couple of years I followed (he might say stalked...) Jay's work. About 3 years ago, he sent me his Building a Better Runner series (1 & 2)--since I do not charge for coaching...

Great Stuff! I really like his functional movement (ie gambetta) philosphy. Finally met him in person last year at a conference. Great energy! SO, yes! I try to pick jay's brain (email) and have the kids do many of his routines pretty faithfully. Very few injuries...
