First bike race in the books. This was a 45 mile (actually 44 point something) out and back course with 2000 feet of climbing. Although I did 3 minutes faster on the way back, I have much to learn about bike racing, pacing, what kind of pain I can tolerate etc. Still, I passed 5 people on the return and nobody passed me.

Man does this sport skew old! Guys from their 40s to 70s abounded. I suppose because it's expensive and easier on your body?

I really enjoyed this and was actually sad when the race ended. I'll be back.

In other news... Jack Daniels died yesterday at 92.

Glad you enjoyed it! If no one passed you, then you did just fine.

For my mountain bike race this year I am in the 40-49 category and it is WAY faster than the 39 and under category. I regularly (turned 40 last January) get beat by guys in their 50s who look like they couldn't possibly beat me. They wouldn't last more than a few miles running even at an easy pace with me though!

Your years of aerobic base will help you tremendously. It is a matter of getting used to saddle time and some of the nuances of bike racing. It is a lot of pieces to fit together and has far more variables than running and isn't just about raw fitness, which I think arguably running races are (mostly).

Those are good thoughts Jason. I got beat by lots of people who, judging by the looks of them, I wouldn't have thought would beat me at anything related to endurance. I spent the last few miles riding with a guy who was downright chubby.

I got him in the end though.
