Had a fair amount of success as a Masters runner for most of my 40s.

Have fun with running, explore more trails, stay healthy.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Keep running and racing consistently for as long as I can. Find what is sustainable for me over the long run.

I teach AP European History and other courses at Alta High School. I coached the track and cross country teams at Alta for 16 years.

Today I set a PR for 5.9 miles as I was part of a large group of runners that took a shortcut. I knew we were following the marathon route and not the 10k route but since everyone in front of me was going the wrong way, I thought what the heck.

I won my age group and finished second behind Walter in the masters race. Came through 5k in 17:00.I'm not unhappy with this considering my lack of running, zero quality running, and excess of abdominal flab.

What I love about this race is the huge number of high school kids that run. They all go out too fast and it gives you a lot of people to pass the last few miles. Better than being passed.

Why are there hundreds of people these days running 10k's who dress like they're running the Hardrock 100 or something? How much fluid and calories does one need to ingest during a 10k?

After the race I walked back along the marathon course and ran some with Fritz (1st), Sasha (3rd), and Steve Anderson (4th) as they finished the marathon. Awesome showing for this here blog.

Nice job out there today! Sorry about the mix up. Truely sucks to see you PR'd and then they tell you at the finish you fudged the course! Oh freakin well. Another 10k in the books. I havnt done one in a while. Keep up the great work Rob.

I thought about cutting the Marathon course short a few times. Like instead of turning at the zoo and just coming straight down Sunnyside would have been nice.

Good job, Steve Anderson told me you were going to be angry after this race today, I'm glad you weren't.

BTW - I saw someone wearing a fuel belt at a 5k a few weeks ago. Seems to bear out the truth that the sports drink industry are marketing geniuses. Article posted by Steve Magness bmj.com/content/345 - quite interesting. The industry employs researchers to confirm the need for sports drinks. Bit of a lack of independence.

You beat me by a large margin, so your fears can be put to rest :) I was not familiar with the course at all (my first time) so when I turned the corner and saw the finish line and my Garmin said 5.8ish miles I was in shock... Oh well.

I have also noticed a huge spike in nutrition belts and I wonder how much of those fluids and calories they actually consume. I think runners want to be more like triathletes and buy lots of gear.

At least people RUN the 10K. The pics I saw from Hardrock made it look like everyone was either 1) Sitting at an aid station, eating chips or 2) Walking w/ trekking poles :-)

Jake- umm... err... well, I can't think of anything better than either sitting in aid stations eating awesome food (I had cherry cobbler, blueberry cobbler, pumpkin pie, cookies, bacon, pop) or hiking around some absolutely gorgeous mountains. I mean, even your significant other won't ask if you've taken out the trash or mowed the lawn during the middle of a race. Is there a better way to spend up to 48 hours of uninterrupted time in one of the most beautiful places on earth with tons of volunteers willing to do anything or cook anything you ask? I'm just saying.

Oh yeah, and nice job at the 10k, Rob.

I mean, think about when you did the R2R2R, Rob? Is there anywhere else you would have rather been then spending all day in the beautiful outdoors? Now, imagine aid stations with nice volunteers along the way. Of course, for Hardrock you have to double the distance and triple the time, but we won't address that...
