Let me get the excuses out of the way first.

1. Hot - 75 degrees for the 6:45 am start.

2. Humid and raining.

3. Headwind the entire way.

 4. New eco friendly racing flats suck - no traction on wet, slippery roads, slipping on every stride push-off for 13 miles.

5. Less than 2 hours sleep.

The conditions were really less than ideal. All of the times across the board were about 3 minutes off of last year. So even though I didn't reach my goal of 1:14 or so, I'm really happy with my overall finish in the masters field which brought in a lot of top runners from all over the country. Not me though - I brought myself in.

Two things I'm happy with - my 10k split of 35:50 ain't bad for January, and my last mile in 5:40. Not happy with my attitude in the middle miles. Lacked intensity and was generally apathetic and was mostly letting my mind dwell on the difficult conditions and poor footing. All things considered though, I think I'm ahead of where I was last year and can maybe shoot for a 1:14 at the Salt Lake Half.

Rob, You did great.. I think this race will only set you up for the next one to be better. This was a good one to blow the carbon out of the valves so to speak. And like you said times were off by 3 minutes last year so it's all relative in that case right?

From Bret on Sun, Jan 30, 2011 at 12:26:06 from 74.82.68.19

Nice job Rob. I was looking at the weather conditions last night and was hoping that it would not be raining. There is a conversion table that Jack Daniels has for temps over 60 degrees so I would view that as a good result under the conditions.

On accounts 1 thru 5 -- that stinks!

With that said, you did AWESOME! 5:40 for your last mile???? DANG! You are amazing. Seriously, congrats! Lots to be happy about.

You are going to have a GREAT year! :)

I meant to include that the Daniel's temperature conversion would have you at 1:15:19 - (60 degrees vs. 75 degress). So there ya go...:)

Good run in tough conditions! Great start to the racing year!

Thanks a lot Steve. I'm feeling a little better about the race now.

Bret - I'm going to change the time at the top of this post to reflect the daniel's conversion.

Heading to the airport now. It's 80 and sunny now here in Austin. Looks like snow and 18 tomorrow morning in Salt Lake.

rob - great race. sorry about the conditions and the lack of friendliness from the eco friendly shoes. but you still ran a strong race and it's a great start to the year.

safe travels back to utah. hold on to that austin sunshine. we need it here.

nice job in adverse conditions in the off season. I am betting you have 1:14 in you at SLC half for sure. well done.

From Jon on Sun, Jan 30, 2011 at 20:55:43 from 74.177.100.209

Given all those conditions, it sounds like you did pretty well. And we know you'll do better in the future, too.

From dugco on Mon, Jan 31, 2011 at 09:30:07 from 199.44.94.5

I'm pretty sure theres a conversion factor for nobility in shoe selection as well, so lets just go with 1:13.87 - great job!

From Wesley Hunt on Mon, Jan 31, 2011 at 11:28:04 from 198.8.4.24

Brutal conditions...fighting through that will make you even stronger as you move into the heart of your racing season. Very impressive finish my man.

From Rob on Mon, Jan 31, 2011 at 11:43:26 from 206.71.84.68

Good job Rob, my 1/2, 2 weeks ago had perfect conditions and I was 3 minutes off of my goal time. 3 minutes is easy to loose in rough conditions.

From Fritz on Tue, Feb 01, 2011 at 22:51:37 from 67.182.226.25

Nice job Rob. 2 hours of sleep can't be ideal and the weather looked rough. Solid last mile.

From Mark on Sun, Feb 06, 2011 at 17:14:38 from 173.168.88.68

Great job Rob! Sounds like the odds were against you, still an amazing time. Congrats on the high placing, too.
