Downhill Dash Day! Utah's best race.

Good day at the Alta Peruvian. Only a few seconds off my best time on this course. Quads are pounded as usual. More later

OK, so I feel like I need to write a race report that does this race justice.

Yesterday was the 20th Annual Alta Peruvian Downhill Dash and Bar-B-Q Bash. The Alta Peruvian Lodge is a special place for Ann and I. We began coming here for ski vacations back in the 90s before our kids were born. The lodge and Alta Ski Area are a big reason why we were drawn to Utah.Unfortunately, one of the drawbacks of actually living here is that we no longer could justify staying at the Peruvian when we went skiing.

Then we discovered the Downhill Dash which liberally gives away overnight lodging vouchers for age group winners. A few words about John Cahill, the man who started this race. Most of this is based on what I've heard but I think it's fairly accurate. John is now 89 years old and I think he's the third fastest over 70 marathoner ever behind only Ed Whitlock and John Keston. He ran right around 3:01 or 3:02

Nice work Rob. It was great seeing you up there! This really is a great race. I talked my brother and his girlfriend into running it and they loved it. They had never heard of it though and said they'd have run it every year if they knew about it. I'm sad this is the last year.

What a fun weekend! Way to bomb the downhill!!!

Cahill facts via the St. George website:

"After only one year of running, inspired by angioplasty to clear a clogged coronary artery, John ran his debut marathon in St. George in 1989 at age 65. John won his age division with a time of 3:04:49, which can be age graded (AG) to a time of 2:23:18. In 1993, at age 69, he ran 3:05:17 and AG time of 2:17:44, again winning his division. His fastest age graded time, however, came in 1996 at age 72, when John ran a phenomenal time of 3:05:50, which resulted in the 2nd fastest age graded time in the history of the race, 2:13:31. This time in 1996 still stands as the fastest time in the age group 70-74 for the St. George marathon and was also a United States national marathon record for this age group. In 2001, at age 77, John also set a still standing St. George marathon record in the age group 75-79 by running a time of 3.30.44. John eventually ran four marathons that had an age graded time under 2:20:00."

Good work, Rob. That must be fun to get moving that fast. I quite like the wider sense of "event" for this race. You've got an incredible community out there.

Nicely done, I know how much you like this event.
