Some good, some not so good. Off to Andy's baseball game now....more later.

Long 24 hours. I got down to Provo lat night around 9:30 after Andy's game. They lost 11-10 in extra innings but Andy went 4-4 and scored 4 runs. This put his team into the losers bracket (double elimination) which meant he had a game this morning at 10 am and, if they won that, another game at noon. Tough in 90 degree heat on a bunch of 7 year-olds. So his team won both games today, each by the score of 20-12. Now they will play the same team that beat them last night (the Orioles) at 5 pm on Monday and the winner of that game will play the Red Sox for the championship at 6:30 on Monday - the Red Sox having defeated the Orioles 28-26 today :). You gotta love first graders playing baseball.

So Jake and I split a room at the Spiffy Sleep Inn in Provo and managed about 3 or 4 hours sleep. I ran just about 1:19 even which I guess is not bad for me these days. I've been avoiding long downhill runs and it showed today. My chest also felt tight and constricted most of the ways. I managed to take third behind Sasha and Steve Ashbaker in the Masters division and win a little $, but Sasha is just a mere lad of 40.

I had all but given up by mile 11 and ran that mile in 6:43 after coming through 10 in about 59:20. Then Kassi caught me and I managed a 5:58 for mile 12 in an effort to hang with her. This kept me from closing the race out with a couple 6:30s.

I feel like I should run better but I'm just not the competitor I used to be. I am pretty happy to have good health and to be able to run competitively but this is getting really hard. I really enjoy my friendship and training partners and I want to hang in there a while longer. Lets hope I bounce back decently for Minnesota.

Nice going today.

Go, Andy, Go!

Fine work to you too, Rob.

Thanks Doug. Busy, but fun, day.

From Fritz on Sat, Jun 08, 2013 at 16:05:44 from 67.177.4.64

considering the circumstances it looks like you had a good race.

That's a serious schedule for some little league'ers. I hope Andy's team beats the Orioles and takes on the Red Sox for the title. Where are the games? Watching little league'ers put up 20 runs is a lot more fun to watch than a 3-2 pitching duel in the majors.

Rob, You put up a pretty good battle considering the allergies. Sorry I didn't get to talk to you Steve afterwards I was hoping to do so but had to get back over to Sasha's for my car.

Nice job Rob. You said you weren't feeling well all week and I have to believe that played a role in you not finishing as strong as you would like to. Stay confident for the marathon in two weeks!

Nicely done, Rob. I know you wanted more, and that will clearly come soon. Nice seeing you today.

Nice race Rob! Getting prepared for Minnesota!

From Jon on Sun, Jun 09, 2013 at 06:39:03 from 107.203.52.135

You'll be just fine for Minnesota. After all, nothing can hurt as bad as what you felt in your profile picture, right? ;)

You are AMAZING!!! And remember ... according to your kids you are pretty much a decent person even when you are not hitting the same numbers you did when you were 10 years younger!!! :) :) :)

Most importantly ... what a cool dad you are!!! Good luck to Andy on Monday. Btw, I need to pick your brain as well!! I have two state champs on my hands now (Sophia and Oliver both placed 1st in their best races at the USATF State meet yesterday) and I have NO IDEA what I am doing when it comes to their distances. :)

Bringing home some dough at any race is AMAZING!!! A huge congratulations! :)

I loved it when you passed me Rob, I've missed getting a wippin. Like I told you, I would've walked if you hadn't shown up and given me a jersey to hang onto for four miles.

This is number three by my count, don't plan on four happening any time soon. :-)

For that last paragraph in your report you just need a good backhand. The best is yet to come

From Bret on Sun, Jun 09, 2013 at 18:53:46 from 96.228.167.228

Nice running Rob - keeping it all in perspective is important.

Andy sounds like he's quite the ballplayer!

From Jason D on Sun, Jun 09, 2013 at 22:51:29 from 24.1.80.94

Good race, Rob. I'm now very curious about Jon's comment about the profile pic.

That is an intense schedule for 7-year-olds! 4-4 with 4 scored runs is quite a contribution. I think at 7 I was still trying to get to first base. I was so slow!

From Sasha Pachev on Fri, Jun 14, 2013 at 16:15:50 from 69.28.149.29

Rob:

I am getting two things out of your race report. One - take care of the congestion/allergies/chest problems. Once that is taken care of, you could use a tempo run partner that will keep asking you to give him five. Jake probably could do it for you in SLC, but if he can't and you happen to be in the Utah County, I'll be happy to help. Speaking of which - Chad is joining me this Saturday (tomorrow) at 7:30 AM - 395 S Palisade in Orem - for a 20 mile run. You or anybody else are welcome to join us.

The reason for the partner is that you managed 5:58 after 6:43 when you had one. I realize that 6:43 could have been mental, but a runner with experience can only get so mental in a race. It is more than that - you probably have a hard time activating something, and having a visual goal to go after will help you develop the strength to override it.
