Today I attempted to teach the Civil War in one 90 minute class period.
I failed. Even with a nifty video I have called "The Civil War in Four Minutes".
Short run sandwiched between the time I got home from work and Abby's violin recital.

So do you teach the official version of the war (like you'll have to with a student teacher) with Lincoln saving the slaves and the union and all that? Or did you teach the version I prefer with Lincoln trodding all over the Constitution and choosing to kill 600,000 human beings? (The libertarian in me is curious)

Actually, the majority of the killing was done by the Confederates and they shot first. Simplistic i know, but factual. The majority of those 600,00 men (actually it was closer to 700,000) were volunteers fighting for a cause they believed in - on both sides. One thing that history has shown is that people are willing to die for causes. Hard to lay that all on Lincoln.
I'm a huge admirer of Abraham Lincoln. I guess a lot of it is where you choose to place the emphasis. Yes, he did imprison some secessionists in Maryland without trial (the wartime measure of suspending habeas corpus) vs. freedom for four million human beings. It's also true that the Constitution permits the suspension of habeas corpus in the case of dealing with internal rebellions - which is how Lincoln viewed secession.
I would certainly think that any Libertarian would celebrate the 13th Amendment. Also the 14th and 15th. All three direct results of Lincoln's presidency.

Interesting points of view. My plan of 1 1/2 class periods for the war went out the door as well. Most of it was thrown out the door by the sub I had when we were down at FOotLocker who decided to not teach any of my lesson. I told my class that they could pull that Trick when they were sophs, but not in an AP class.

Dave - I didn't know you taught history. I have a couple trusted subs I can usually count on. Are you familiar with Steve Brown? He's a Utah Jazz announcer who subs at Alta. He's excellent!

How does the Utah curriculum lay out the Civil War? I'm sure it was very different from where I grew up - in the Capital of the Confederacy. People still drive around in their jacked up trucks with Confederate flags (and guns) hanging in the window.
