A great new Dos Equis "most interesting man in the world" commercial I saw today...

"His small talk has been known to alter foreign policy"

"He once ran a marathon because it was on his way"

"Sasquatch takes pictures of him"

Stay thirsty my friends!

Good gully run with my boys - 7.25 miles in 55:30.

I'm kind of agonizing over whether to run Des News or not. Of course the marathon is out of the question since I only average about 40 miles/week these days and I weigh 155 pounds. If I run the 10k I could probably win$250 since most of the fast guys are running the marathon.

Then there's the streak. I ran my first Des News in 2002, three weeks after I moved to Utah and haven't missed one since. I've also won the masters division in either the marathon or the 10k six out of the last seven years - partly because I run whatever race Steve Anderson isn't running, but still...

OK, I did it signed up for the 10K. I'm really not sure if my legs are ready for those downhills but I'm going to gulp some vitamin I and go for it.

Isn't that why we all run a marathon? Metaphorically speaking.

Is Des News on your way tomorrow?

From JD on Mon, Jul 23, 2012 at 11:29:30 from 70.96.78.149

haha - i love those dos equis ads!

i don't want to influence your decision about des news. but be warned, i'll be there, and i'm shooting for a top 400 placing.

Ha, it sounds like we have a similar delimma... Maybe I'll see you tomorrow. Or maybe not :)

I don't see any argument for not running it so go for it!

From Rob Murphy on Mon, Jul 23, 2012 at 12:10:38 from 24.10.249.165

Lulu - the argument for not running (you're right, I did forget that) is that I don't feel like running, my foot would hurt, and I would run a slower time than in past years which would convince me that I'm too old to run fast anymore.

From Lulu Walls on Mon, Jul 23, 2012 at 12:13:09 from 155.100.212.98

That's a pretty good argument! You can just come sit on the sidewalk with me and drink out of my Nalgene of Bloody Mary's :)

From runningafterbabies on Mon, Jul 23, 2012 at 12:19:50 from 71.195.219.247

Rob, we should just make a pact and do it! I feel the same way as you. I'm afraid my time will be slower than my unaided 10ks this year. Any advice on pacing the course? You are a veteran dn runner!

From Rob Murphy on Mon, Jul 23, 2012 at 12:20:57 from 24.10.249.165

If I don't race I'm going to run the last few miles of the marathon with Steve Anderson.

But your plan sounds good too.

From Rob Murphy on Mon, Jul 23, 2012 at 12:25:47 from 24.10.249.165

The 10k is screaming downhill. The last mile can be hard if your quads are really pounded. I doubt you would run slower than your un-aided 10ks!

I usually advise people to not hold back. Just let it rip on those downhills. You've got to have fun with it and it's not like it's a marathon and you have to pay for your sins for many miles, just one mile. My 5k split is usually my 5k PR for any given year.

From Rob on Mon, Jul 23, 2012 at 12:47:25 from 206.71.84.68

If Steve is going after that 3 hour marathon he has been shooting for he might be running the course backwards.

From Brandon on Mon, Jul 23, 2012 at 14:31:38 from 67.214.231.170

Is 155 big? :)

Please say no...

From Rob Murphy on Mon, Jul 23, 2012 at 15:04:30 from 24.10.249.165

Rob - you just never know with Steve.

Brandon - I see what you're saying but my fit racing weight is about 145. Ten pounds is a lot when you're racing. That's what nine days of vacation eating and reduced running will do.

From Bret on Mon, Jul 23, 2012 at 15:19:42 from 96.228.167.228

Do it! Besides, it's not like you are going out to pace somebody to go sub 3 hours for the marathon...and then snagging the Master's win.

From Jake K on Mon, Jul 23, 2012 at 16:41:50 from 184.167.8.115

Both the 10K and marathon seem like better options than a 30 mile treadmill run at 3am, so you really can't choose wrong.

Melody - you can't hold back on Wakara. This is a 10K where banking some time early is acually probably the right strategy :-)
