Personal:

I used to run for BYU, but only after trying out three times and finally walking on, so I was never a star. However, it was wonderful to run with great people and under Coach Shane. When you run with fast people, you can't help to improve! I graduated BYU in 1998, and didn't run a race until 2002, after having my second child. My hiatus and other crazy life commitments have made my competitive running suffer, but the last couple of years I have tried to get back into it the best I can. I have been married since 1996, to Paul Lowry, who is a runner himself. I have three boys (my three rascals), ages 12, 10, and 8.

After a great 2008 season, I was injured and eventually diagnosed and cross-diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a type of arthritis disease, which precludes running for all but the most stubborn.  So I am on medications, trying to stay healthy, and seeing my PT often.  And running!  Now beating the streets in Hong Kong.

AM:  Power walked 5.8, 13:00 ave pace, outer low hamstring still achy.  Stretched after first mile.

PM: 30 min elliptical workout that just about did me in: 2 min at each of these levels in this order: 2,3,5,7,4,6,8,3,5,7,4,6,8,3,2.  It was really tough, but I got that great, post workout buzz:

I AM QUEEN OF THE WORLD!!! (ok that may be taking it too far, but I feel good :) ).

What do you think it is going to take to fix that hamstring?

When I was on vacation, I walked with my sister(she's a dedicated walker). I could not keep up with her and ended up just jogging along side. I think she could walks a 10-11 minute miles. I could not believe it. It feels good once you get going. I hope you're doing those special hamstring stretches.... BTW, I met a really amazing massage therapist who really knew her way around my piriformis/hamstrings/glutes. I know it's just one more thing to do, but it's hard to find someone who's not shy about massaging your butt. I put her number on Marion's blog in case you want to try her out for your hamstring. Can't wait to see you Labor Day! I missed it last year and won't make that mistake again.

Maurine and Luz - hey so my upper ham was hurting monday, but since then it has been my lower outer ham. I have been doing the special ham stretches Marion showed me which I think Luz showed her, so that's keeping my upper ham happy, and I am doing general ham/ITB stretches, but I am relying on my PT to show me some stretches for this new pain, and I see him tomorrow.

Good job. I don't think I could walk that fast nor run that pace. That pace is kind of an in between one. So good job for walking so fast.

Thanks Amber and Steve! I won't win any race walking events with that pace, but I'm happy with it. I am not so happy about my running miles at 10:00 pace, but it is what it is.
