Personal:

I used to run for BYU, but only after trying out three times and finally walking on, so I was never a star. However, it was wonderful to run with great people and under Coach Shane. When you run with fast people, you can't help to improve! I graduated BYU in 1998, and didn't run a race until 2002, after having my second child. My hiatus and other crazy life commitments have made my competitive running suffer, but the last couple of years I have tried to get back into it the best I can. I have been married since 1996, to Paul Lowry, who is a runner himself. I have three boys (my three rascals), ages 12, 10, and 8.

After a great 2008 season, I was injured and eventually diagnosed and cross-diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a type of arthritis disease, which precludes running for all but the most stubborn.  So I am on medications, trying to stay healthy, and seeing my PT often.  And running!  Now beating the streets in Hong Kong.

Celebrated JJ going to his first day of kindergarten by sleeping in!  Not only that, but Paul wanted to go to bed early since he had to wake up early, so I was in bed by 9:20 and woke up at 7:20--heaven!

I walked around the WH park, but when I got into the foresty area there was my neighbors wolfdog guarding the path, and he didn't move when I said hi, so I turned myself around, walked home and called the neighbor.  She brought him in and I was able to resume my walk. Walked 3.30 outside, including a hearty stretching stop (you know you are stretching when you are wimpering).  Then hopped on treadmill, walked another mile, then started RUNNING (ok jogging).  Ran one mile in 9:53, felt much better than my road mile on Monday, but there was just a tinge of tenderness in my right SI area.  One mile seems so long to me!  It is weird how half a year ago I would do half marathon easy runs without thinking it was long, but now one mile seems long.  

I am under 140 again!  And I'm going to stay there!  Only about 15 more pounds until I don't feel like I am carrying around saddlebags.

I think I will drive in my Onion Days application today, to save myself the online fee and so I can get a sugar free iceee, a treat that won't come back to haunt me.

Evening, abs, stretching and roller on my lower right ham, still hurty.

Great progress, Michelle! I need to get serious about the diet and get my weight off too.

I'll think more about that tomorrow :-) for tomorrow is another day and I am eating treats today my daughter sent from Italy.

I have really been going rounds about the SGM comment. It is hard to try one last hard run at the end of the season. I think I wrecked stuff running hard (for me) at HC on Saturday. Getting myself in order for SG in 4 weeks, which should be a highlight of my running year, is going to be a real challenge. I started breaking down last summer around the same time. I read somewhere that running any more than 30 miles a week is when 'fitness' turns into obsession, and obsession leads to unhealthy perception/attitudes, which in turn lead to injuries. Hmm.

Luz- In my short stint as an observer on the blog, there seems to be a safe training cycle for each runner. The length is different for each, depending on many factors. I think the big trick for us to to figure out how much we can handle and then take a serious amount of down time to heal and recover fully. (cross training, easy runs, lower miles etc) If we do not, as far as I have seen, our body gets injured and we have to take the time off anyway :( Just my two cents ;) Wait, with inflation, that'd be about a quarter these days :)

Luz, I would just take it a day at a time at this point, but be kind to yourself and allow yourself to pull the plug if it seems the race will do more harm than good. Perhaps your back issues are just from camping and they'll go away over this week.

YAY for JJ and mom sleeping in!!!! NICE walk and WONDERFUL run mile there, Michelle! CONGRATS on the sub-140. You are amazing. I LOVE how you stay positive and keep on keepin'!!! Reading your blog and thoughts give me (and I'm sure many others) such inspiration and hope! Keep up the good work!!!!
