Personal:

I used to run for BYU, but only after trying out three times and finally walking on, so I was never a star. However, it was wonderful to run with great people and under Coach Shane. When you run with fast people, you can't help to improve! I graduated BYU in 1998, and didn't run a race until 2002, after having my second child. My hiatus and other crazy life commitments have made my competitive running suffer, but the last couple of years I have tried to get back into it the best I can. I have been married since 1996, to Paul Lowry, who is a runner himself. I have three boys (my three rascals), ages 12, 10, and 8.

After a great 2008 season, I was injured and eventually diagnosed and cross-diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a type of arthritis disease, which precludes running for all but the most stubborn.  So I am on medications, trying to stay healthy, and seeing my PT often.  And running!  Now beating the streets in Hong Kong.

pain 0-1

Anyone have a vote for how many minutes I should start walking on Monday?

My plan in my mind:

Week 1 - I was thinking to walk M, take Tues off, walk W, TH, take F off, then walk Sat.  Just to ease in conservatively.

Week 2 - Walk 6x per week, increasing intensity, and maybe introduce a short ellyptical session in toward the end if I am feeling good.

Week 3 - Continue to walk aggressively, add in light pool running and ellyptical (two a days cross training, but light).

Week 4 - try harder ellyptical and pool running and hard walking,

Week 5 - Keep up cross training, introduce running (probably 5 min after warm up M, tues off, 10 min after warm up W, Th off, 10 min Friday, 20 min Sat).

 Too conservative?  Too aggressive?

I am so glad to hear that your pain level is way down. I am no where near the experienced runner that you are but I think it sounds perfect!! It sounds like exactly what I tried to do after having my last baby (not that it's anywhere near similar) and it's amazing how my body just came back together as opposed to when I had my 2nd baby and went out afterward too aggressive and paid for it later. I think it sounds like a great plan! Keep us posted on pain levels, etc. OH, and thank you for your nice "thank you" card. What a sweetie. It was our pleasure, I hope to have parties more often!! Thanks Michelle!! Hang in there :)

Michelle,

I think it sounds perfect. But probably mostly because I think you are so on top of things and hence I assume this is a GENIUS plan!!!

Can't wait to see how it goes. :)

I think your plan sounds great. You're smart enough to listen to your body and not do anything too crazy.

Good luck, I can't wait to see you put up some "easy miles" in the near future.
