Personal:

I used to run for BYU, but only after trying out three times and finally walking on, so I was never a star. However, it was wonderful to run with great people and under Coach Shane. When you run with fast people, you can't help to improve! I graduated BYU in 1998, and didn't run a race until 2002, after having my second child. My hiatus and other crazy life commitments have made my competitive running suffer, but the last couple of years I have tried to get back into it the best I can. I have been married since 1996, to Paul Lowry, who is a runner himself. I have three boys (my three rascals), ages 12, 10, and 8.

After a great 2008 season, I was injured and eventually diagnosed and cross-diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a type of arthritis disease, which precludes running for all but the most stubborn.  So I am on medications, trying to stay healthy, and seeing my PT often.  And running!  Now beating the streets in Hong Kong.

Pain 0-2 during day, sausage toes less until afternoon, now, they are plumping up.  Some unexpected pain in left buttock, please don't tell me it's my left SI.  Not sure as of yet. Started this evening, getting some sharp pangs, but not too intense, about a 3.  Please let it be a freaky pain that goes away the next day. Hypochondriatic psychosis????  Nighttime - pain on right dull, more hamstringy and 2-3, pain on left more sharp, about a 3, miserable night, first time wearing SI belt, not sure if wise to wear.

Paul says he's always wanted a woman with sausage toes.  His dreams are being realized!

A dilemma I face: my stress reaction got worse while I was on crutches, I was also getting PT at least once a week and doing the bone stimulator nightly, normally a stress reaction benefits from less impact.  Before I got a prelim diagnosis of AS the radiologist and my sports doc said, more extreme rest or surgery.  AS treatment usually involves mild - moderate exercise, I think because you want to move those body parts to prevent further calcification/bone fusion.  So I need to treat AS, and fix my stress reaction, but they seem to be at odds.  I was in favor of extreme rest while waiting for a neuro surgeon consult, but what if I am enabling further calcification in the meantime?

So should I be off my feet (currently in wheelchair, have been since Friday, with exception of getting to from car and watching marathon), or should I try to get on my feet and push through the pain?  I am sure my rheumatologist could help me with a wise course of action, but I couldn't even get an appt set today.  The doctor looks over his cases before telling the receptionist how far out to schedule them (according to severity of cases).  My info is on his desk.  So I have to make a decision without much info.  My sports doc says she just put me in the chair to relieve my pain.  Major pain is when I sleep, though if I start walking again I will likely get pain, like the end of May/beg of June when I was trying to get of crutches.

Calgon - take me away!

Lion Queen, your a real trooper, pray everything goes well. I have real empathy for your situation, spent 6 months in a wheel chair with a broken hip, motor cycle crash. Hang in there, you will be back.

I understand your dilemma. I sure hope the rheumatologist gets you in very soon. So, I guess that we need to pray he gets you in SOON!

I'm glad to hear that Pauls into cute little chubby toes. I bet they look really hot oozing out of your sandals ;)

Hey Brent, can I use your points to redeem myself out of this one?

From Smooth on Thu, Jun 18, 2009 at 23:31:20 from 71.32.232.156

The rheumatologist has to see you right away. Does he know your case is urgent? Does he know the dilemma you're in...worse pain when sleeping, etc. Oh, we'll pray that he'll see you soon and have some answers and solutions for your AS.

Yeesh. Unfortunately you're in a really tough spot. Yes, exercise helps AS, but your stress reaction is very real, with its own treatment protocols. It does seem like a conflict. (side note: AS commonly causes loss of bone density, not news you wanted to hear I'm sure, but one more piece of the puzzle fits. AS did not directly cause your stress reaction, but it could have indirectly caused it via bone density loss).

Suggestion: call Sasha and see if he will lend you his Pettibon wobble chair. Even though I'm done with the Pettibon System, I still use the wobble chair just about every day. It's awesome for the SI's, hips, and low back. The physiotherapy exercises I've seen for AS are almost identical to the wobble chair exercises for Pettibon. Have Sasha show you the exercises. IF it seems feasible to do this with your stress reaction, it could be a really good daily exercise for you to do without hurting the stress reaction. No guarantees, but just a thought.

Also, yoga is very good for AS, as is non-impact.

Oh, and prayers that the rheumie sees your case as "important" The sooner you get proper treatment the better. If you can't get into this one, try SLC. Fortunately, you generally only see these types of doctors every 6 months or so, so many people end up going to different cities to find the one they like.

Wish I had words of wisdom for you, but all I can say is hang tough. Thinking of you.
