Personal:

I used to run for BYU, but only after trying out three times and finally walking on, so I was never a star. However, it was wonderful to run with great people and under Coach Shane. When you run with fast people, you can't help to improve! I graduated BYU in 1998, and didn't run a race until 2002, after having my second child. My hiatus and other crazy life commitments have made my competitive running suffer, but the last couple of years I have tried to get back into it the best I can. I have been married since 1996, to Paul Lowry, who is a runner himself. I have three boys (my three rascals), ages 12, 10, and 8.

After a great 2008 season, I was injured and eventually diagnosed and cross-diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a type of arthritis disease, which precludes running for all but the most stubborn.  So I am on medications, trying to stay healthy, and seeing my PT often.  And running!  Now beating the streets in Hong Kong.

So sick of waking up early (about 4:15) to swim, so I slept in and was going to walk with MacK if my pain went down (I was about at a 4 or 5 last night, it gradually came on starting around 4pm).  Unfortunately this morning my pain is anywhere between 2 and 5.  I was standing at my computer and had my legs crossed, uncrossed them and was rewarded with a nice shot of pain.  I had success on Monday with 5 min on/5 min off running/walking, but Wed I do it for 8 each and get rewarded with some nice pain.  Perhaps the walk in the afternoon didn't help?  The other difference as I look back is I forgot to warm up with 5 minutes of walking before the tramp and walk/run cycle, stupid mistake.  MacK arranged a babysitter so we could walk and I had to cancel.  And I have to hit the pool instead because its the only safe thing to do.  I am so discouraged.

PM: 51 minutes of swimming with arms and hamstring lunges and stretching.  Pain in evening in the 5-6 range, walking with a limp sometimes.  I am so sorry if this seems whiny but I am at my wits end and I don't know what to do.  BTW, I wouldn't advise combining crying and swimming, its kind of dangerous.

I know it's tough, Michelle. But trust me as I've been in your shoes. Hang tough and do what you can. Things WILL get better in time. I promise! :)

Hope you don't get too discouraged. I had an injury several years ago where I had to take off two months from running. During that time I did lots of swimming, that was basically the only cross training I could do. When I came back to running, I had a great running year, setting PRs at just about every distance. I'm nowhere near the fast runner that you are, but I feel the swimming really helped my running, got my upper body stronger and helped with overall endurance. So hopefully you will have a similar experience and will come back strong when you're able to run again.

I'm sorry that this is dragging on and such 'a pain' for you. Hang in there and do what you can to get the rest of your body in the shape it needs to be to be ready to rock and roll when you are able to run again.

Hang in there Michelle (much easier said than done) You will be a stronger runner mentally and physically because of what you are going through right now!

oh Michelle, I am so sorry. I wish I could make it all go away.

Did you ride your bike into the pool???

From MichelleL on Thu, Apr 23, 2009 at 23:35:53 from 67.41.191.143

Thanks everyone. The issue is my desire to control the situation and total inability to do so.

Marion--thanks for the much needed laugh.

That last statement has me cracking up.. "BTW, I wouldn't advise combining crying and swimming, its kind of dangerous."

I am picturing you riding your bike in the pool. I see you riding your bike around the pool and crashing into the pool, maybe down the steps into the shallow end. then there is the getting on the bike after the pool and since you are wet, you slip and slide off the bike. I am apparently very tired and have headed off into the Monte Python Zone where flesh eating rabbits are funny.

OK- now I know I have LOST my mind- I thought the quote said- "...biking and swimming" Apparently I can not read anymore either.

I am going to bed before I hurt myself!!!

WHAT A DORK!!!!

Sorry for wreaking your perfectly horrible injury with my insanity.

Hang in there Michelle, I know this sucks but you will get better;-) I know how you feel kiddo and your frustrations and whining are all warranted, just let it out!

Hang in there.

So sorry Michelle. I feel like my battling these injuries is harder mentally than any race situation I've ever been in. I really, really hope that all of us can once again be healthy and running PR strong again. If that ever happens we all need to run a race together just in memory of the injuries... It is just so crazy frustrating!

From Teena on Fri, Apr 24, 2009 at 13:30:42 from 67.177.20.13

Oh Michelle,

This just plain stinks!! I was actually thinking about you last night. It's just so hard to know what to do. I have contemplated the whole "no exercise" for a month idea ... but am afraid I would go completely crazy. Plus, sometimes when I don't exercise I stiffen up and have pain even worse than when I do.

Nobody seems to have the answers ...

The killer is that I know that there is an answer out there for both of us ... it's just that we can't find them.

SO SO SO FRUSTRATING!!!

Hang in there. PLEASE!!!

Oh Michelle, boy do I ever feel for you. After dealing with similar pain for 6 months, I feel your pain. This unfortunately is the life of a hard core distance runner. We have our ups and we have our downs. Just keep doing what you are doing and you will be back at it. Learn from this and you will be more successful in the future. Like I have said in the past there is more to running than just running, so keep up the stretching and exercises. If there is anything I can do to help, like scrape that hammy then let me know.

From josse on Fri, Apr 24, 2009 at 14:05:00 from 75.216.20.111

Sometimes we learn the most from situations that are out of our control. And in the future we see that our hardest times are necessary for growth.
