Two pieces of advice for running in the pre-dawn, sub 27 degree weather.  One:  Wear a 'base' layer for your bum under your running tights.  Two:  Never, under any circumstances stop running for any reason or you will literally freeze your bum off (and your hands, and wherever your clothes are sweaty).  I knew I felt cold, but when I submursed myself into a warm tub after my run, all the fat parts stung as they unthawed. I've only had that happen once before a few years ago when I ran up in Heber in sub 0.  It must have been colder than 27 degrees, or I'm not yet climatized.  But thank goodness for all that blubber-- Me and the seals have really got a good thing going.  I'm just sad for all of you skinny runners who don't have the luxury of such stellar frostbite protection.  Hey, I didn't pack away all that fresh bread, yams and squash over the past month for nothin.   I can't complain I gain about 7 pounds every fall and shed them again in the Spring.  It's the natural way of the earth.  But be carful with your digits out there, it's coooooold!

Hey, I have experienced the same thing but I have felt at a major disadvantage!!! I know the blubber is designed to keep me warm, but those parts of my body (my belly, mostly) seriously get frostbite. There were times last winter when my belly turned purple and stayed that way, as well as very swollen, ALL DAY!!! i was thinking I needed to get rid of the blubber before winter running!

Great job getting out in that cold. I need to work my way into it, and we really did not get a chance. Please tell me it is supposed to warm up!!!!

BTW, I have been meaning to tell you this, but I covet your beautiful arms!!!! Look at that picture on your blog-----you look fabulous!

Kelli--it's all about the lighting and the vaseline on the camera lens :) But here's the thing about the extra layers-- they keep your internal organs, blood supply, tendons & musles from freezing, serving as insulation. You can't stop even perfectly taught skin from freezing and turning purple--but you can better maintain your core heat with more fat. So there. Be glad!

So, I should be grateful to my 4 year old who has been bringing me the Halloween candy she does not like for the last 3 hours while I have worked on homework???? I think I have had about 10 mini candy bars, I feel ill. But, she just keeps bringing them to me, so what do I do???? Yeah for more layers of blubber.

Throw it away....into the outside garbage can. You have my permission. Candy is garbage and should be treated that way. I hope that helps. Seriously-- in the can.

Whoa now. No need to go to any extremes. Kelli - before you throw all that perfectly good chocolate away I am more than happy to take it off your hands.

I wish I was lucky enough to be less discerning. But I have a 300 lb grandma to remind me exactly what I could look like if I don't tell myself that candy is poison. So I'm a little harsh with the food rules. Now, were it Dark Swiss Chocolate we're talking about here, my palms would be sweating a little.

Thanks for the laughs ladies!!!!!

Hey Luz, do you know Noelle Olpin? I noticed on FB you are friends with Hailey and she is friends with Noelle. Anyway, she is my sister-in-law if you know her.

I will try and tell myself candy is poison, but not so sure I will believe myself!

Being the daughter of a dentist, we have a very strong philosophy on Halloween candy. Here it is: as soon as you get it, eat it all in two days. That is supposed to prevent weeks or even months of putting sugar into your teeth and getting cavities, but for me it is now to just get rid of it all.

We had a Trunk or Treat last night, so that is it for us. We are not doing Halloween, we are going to a movie with the kids instead. However, i still have a ton of candy that I bought to hand out. So, I am going to mail it all to Lyman. It is cold enough, it should not melt.

From Kelli on Thu, Oct 29, 2009 at 18:26:08 from 71.219.97.106

Oh, and Starburst, Skittles, Sour Patch kids, that kind of stuff is poison for sure. YUCK! Thanks goodness I do not like ALL candy.

From LuzyLew on Thu, Oct 29, 2009 at 18:26:17 from 208.187.197.42

I don't know Noelle unless I've met her at one of Hailey's parties but didn't know it. I'll look for her if I get invited to Hailey's Christmas extravaganza. As far as the candy goes-- you don't need to think of it as poison, let me just send you a picture of my grandmother (may she rest in peace, rest her soul, etc). I loved her like my own mother, even better. But every time I dare to drink a diet soda, eat white flour or processed sugar, Sees Candies, gobs of butter, or potato chips I accept that I am one bite closer to looking just like she did.

I can totally empathize with the de-frosting in the tub, I swear that happens every morning I run in the cold! I refuse to buy Halloween candy until the afternoon of Halloween! The kids drag enough around the house that I have to resist after enough, I don't want to have to do it before as well!

From Lyman on Thu, Oct 29, 2009 at 21:28:46 from 75.169.106.239

I with you on the candy issue. Its that dark chocolate I just can not resist!
