AM- I'm getting frustrated that my hips aren't getting better.  I ran 1 MP mile today, then one normal mile, plus 8 miles cross training.

Cody pointed out that Karl Meltzer did his race favorites for Rocky Raccoon 100 next week- looks like I'm on it.  I don't think I'll be able to live up to it with my hip, though.  I expect my first 100 will truly be an exercise in enduring pain.

I'll do a few more cross train miles next week but no running to try to give my hips one last rest.

Good plan, I was going to suggest total taper, no running. One thing I forgot to ask. A few years ago when I started to have hip problems, I discovered that having my wallet in my back pocket was stupid. Things greatly improved once I stopped sitting on a wallet.

From Jon on Sat, Jan 30, 2010 at 18:12:57 from 75.169.143.180

I don't keep my wallet in my pocket at work, for that reason. Plus it wears out the pants. So that isn't a cause.

In your opinion, how much cross training (i.e. non-painful biking) should I do this week?

From crockett on Sat, Jan 30, 2010 at 18:34:07 from 70.56.101.161

How much cross-training? Minimal, just to stay loose and keep the stupid taper pains away.

Jon, I may have missed this, but did you get an x-ray? Just curious what your diagnosis was?

From Jon on Sat, Jan 30, 2010 at 22:22:36 from 75.169.143.180

Yes. And the diagnosis was that the hip joint socket (i.e. bone and cartilage) was fine. That meant the issue was outside the socket and that my continued running would not cause permanent damage. Hopefully. They think it is simply overuse/strained muscle and ligament insertion points, combined with weak hip abductor/adductor muscles.

You're getting all sorts of ink lately. Congrats on #513 marathon performance this year!

Jon, I guess that is as good as you can hope for.

Paul, How do you find these things?

From Jon on Sat, Jan 30, 2010 at 23:33:46 from 75.169.143.180

Wow, that's pretty cool, Paul. Not as cool as being number 92, though. 92!!!

From Adam RW on Sat, Jan 30, 2010 at 23:41:56 from 24.10.132.131

Jon, FYI. My comment above was about the diagnosis not the placing. You can hope for much higher than #513... But making that list at all is prestigious enough.

Hey I hear your pain, I have tried loads for hip pain, and have managed to keep it at bay, I dont know were your hip pain is, but I can tell you what I did....

. xtrain on an elliptical as the movement is smaller than running but similar better than cycling for sure!

. swimming is great for injury recovery doing crawl is great dont do breast stroke bad for hips!

. Stretches, for the hips, also do the groin stretches and quads as well as hamstring, itb, and piriformis !

lower back stretches too, as a tight lower back can cause problems with your hips!

. I also do trigger point, now for the piriformis, sit on a tennis ball in the cheek of the bum Now IT HURTS really hurts but it works for sure, this is the one thing I do when my hips hurt. and trigger point on the hamstrings and the quads!

. Sports massage, my physio mainly just does massage no machines or silly things, hands on massage, she manipulates the piriformis, and massages the greater trochanter area which is usually sore when my hips are sore too!

I hope this is of some help and happy recovery :-)

Jon,

Did you see the article in runners world on hip injuries? It's in the February issue. It has some good info.

From Jon on Mon, Feb 01, 2010 at 22:02:32 from 75.169.140.96

I don't get runners world- I'll see what they said online.
