AM - 10 miles.

PM - 6 miles.

Since I didn't run last Thursday afternoon or the following morning, I figured Friday was a good time to get my bloodwork done again (no dehydration to potentially inflate the results).

That's a nice reminder that when approached the right way, high volume can build you up, not break you down. Another way I like to interpret this is: eight minute miles on grass are definitely worth something!

Wow - those are awesome numbers. That's gotta put some confidence back into you.

Wow that is awesome. I'm going to run 9 min miles on grass and see if I can get mine even higher.

Jake, I gave blood today and they said my iron is 15.7. I have no reference for runners. Is that ok?

From Jake K on Mon, Oct 06, 2014 at 08:44:10 from 199.190.170.24

Jon - the best reference ranges I've found for runners are in Coe/Martin's textbook "Better Training for Distance Runners"

Hematocrit 44.9 +/- 0.74

Ferritin 30.1 +/- 12.7

Iron 97 +/- 39.2

These are dramatically different than the reference ranges for regular people. A typical sedentary person will have a MUCH higher Ferritin/Iron level than someone who runs a lot.

So the question is whether the value they gave you was Iron or Ferritin (the "stored" form of iron in your cells, and more important parameter). Either way it's even lower after donating blood! :-)

Shew, so happy to see you back running! Off to run 8-minute miles on grass to see if I can match your hematocrit :)

Very impressive Jake. This of course means you are in great shape and you've made a nice leap. I am excited for your race this weekend. Nothing is ever perfect but you still have a good one in you right now. I will continue to send good vibrations to your hamstring throughout the week.

I can run... I don't know if I can run FAST (and probably won't even test it this week b/c I'm not sure I want to know the answer yet), but as long as I can run and not be tearing the muscle apart, I'll be on the line Sunday.

The bloodwork e-mail came in as we were driving home from BCC yesterday...

"Should I even look at this?"

"I don't know... you might not want to know at this point."

"What the h#ll, I'm just gonna look"...

"I'M BACK, BABY!"

[High Fives all around. No one has hands on the steering wheel.]

Jake, why are runners lower? More rbc and use more?

From SlowJoe on Tue, Oct 07, 2014 at 01:25:34 from 168.215.171.129

Nice blood! And all you had to do was run 150 miles a week at altitude. Who knew it was so easy?!

I just checked mine for reference and they were inbetween your June and August numbers, except ferritin. You have to live in Texas and eat beef 3 x a day to reach 200....

From Jake K on Tue, Oct 07, 2014 at 02:40:09 from 199.190.170.75

Because you are constantly destroying red blood cells (foot strike hemolysis is the primary culprit, and there are some other mechanisms as well).

Yep, it's so simple... just 3 hours of running every day, and you're set! If I could just munch on a cow all day in the office like you, Joe...
