Read this morning that a local guy died on/around Capitol Peak. I did a (relatively unwise in retrospect) solo ascent of that mountain in 2008. Sharp ridges, constant exposure. Unforgiving terrain around there. I remember feeling a sense of relief when I got back to my jeep that day.

Jim Nelson was a legit ultra guy including multiple sub 24 hour Wasatch finishes, Hardrock, Barkley 100 marathons finisher, etc. Very sad.

Be careful out there.

That looks like something you could easily fall off of.

Seems like an interesting guy Kendall. Wish I had known him.

Most of the "14ers" in Colorado are relatively easy - not technical peaks. You can walk up half of them. Capitol is an exception... no trail once you gain this ridge (pic below)... then you just try and stay on the spine until you get to the top... with a couple thousand feet of air underneath you on both sides at times.

This one isn't mine, but it gives a good sense of the scale: http://goo.gl/W0F3be

Looks a bit like the spine to Peifferhorn or White Baldy. Sketchy. Did you summit?

If you take that one exposed part of Pfeifferhorn, then multiply that times 2 hours of being in that type of terrain, you're in range :-)

Yeah, I submitted that day. In typical Colorado fashion, it was an absurdly early start, but of course thunderstorms rolled in around noon as I was finally back on the valley trail. Perfect timing. That whole region (Elks) is amazing. You'd probably really, really enjoy running the Four Pass Loop, Kendall.

I'll have to go run that one.
