Short-Term Running Goals:

Keep on running, enjoy it for the sake of running, relax and enjoy life...de-stress.  Stay fit as I enter retirement in  2025.

No racing, retired.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Keep running until this old body says no, running for fun.

Personal:

I started running competitively in 2005 and ran my first marathon in 2005. Now retired from competitive racing.

Bend down, O Lord, and hear my prayer;

answer me, for I need your help.
Protect me, for I am devoted to you.
Save me, for I serve you and trust you.
You are my God.
Be merciful to me, O Lord,
for I am calling on you constantly.
Give me happiness, O Lord,
for I give myself to you.
O Lord, you are so good, so ready to forgive,
so full of unfailing love for all who ask for your help.
Listen closely to my prayer, O Lord;
hear my urgent cry.
I will call to you whenever I’m in trouble,
and you will answer me.  - Psalm 86:1-7

The day was perfect for a marathon.  I drove up to Rexburg with a friend also going the distance (at a bright 4:30am) and met up with Clyde and Kory at Madison high school.  I sat with Clyde on the bus ride up to the dam site and chatted about running, life, etc.

The weather was perfect, low 40's and no wind.  At the gun, Clyde and I started together and took the first mile easy then started to push the pace.  We caught the lead relay guy about 4M as we are now averaging about a 5:45-5:50 pace.  Clyde is running really well and I am right there with him through about 9M.  Starting at 9M, the ghosts of Odgen Marathon from 3 weeks ago start to haunt me...my hamstring starts to tighten a bit and I beginning to feel some "twinges" in my left knee.  So, I start to back it off a bit knowing that if I keep this up, I will really pay for it at the hill.  At 10M, Clyde has about a 15 second lead and is running strong.  I just settle into a 6:10ish pace that feels pretty comfortable and wait for the hill to start around 15M.  At 16M, the real torture begins and miles 17 - 19 really just suck and the pace drops way off as I just stuggle up the hill and attempt to keep Clyde in sight (approximately 2 minutes back at this point, but I can still see him!).  Mile 20 is a little better as it begins to level off and then finally mile 22-23 comes around and allows for a breather due to the downhill, which I am only able to run at a 6:07.  As we then hit the city and the flat part of town, the last 2M are just survival.  Try to save a bit of a kick as I approach the finish but can't quite hit the sub-2:44.

Final time of 2:44:05, knocking almost 7 minutes off my time from last year and good enough for second place behing Clyde.  Kory comes in strong for 3rd place!

Overall a really good run and a good test of my fitness to finish two faster marathons in 3 weeks time.  I am really happy with my time considering how hard this course truly is.

It was great meeting and talking with the other bloggers.  Look forward to seeing Clyde again in St. George (if not before...BTW, send me a copy of the picture of the two of us if you could).  Looking forward to a rest week this week, just some easy miles later in the week.  I will pace my wife next Saturday in her second 5K in 3 weeks (just started running in January!) at the big Idaho Falls race (Scenic River Classic).

Jeff,

Great job. You ran a very good race. I think you'll be running a 2:35 or lower at STGM. It was great to meet you and run the race with you. Have a great summer and look into the Hobble Creek Half. BTW I'll send you that picture. I just need your email address.

Thanks, let's keep in touch. My email is shadlejt@id.doe.gov.

I waited all weekend for you to post your race so I could tell you good job. I am very impressed with your performance after a great race at Ogden only 3 weeks ago. And you can't feel bad come in second place in a Marathon to Clyde "The Glide"(SuperFly). How was the overall race compared to Ogden because you only ran just over 2 minutes slower with only 3 weeks of recovery?

From jtshad on Mon, Jun 11, 2007 at 14:26:14

Thanks, I appreciate the thought. It was great racing with Clyde who is a very strong runner. It was great to see Kory make it through his issues for a strong 3rd place. Another Ogden runner, Pete Petersen, came in 4th!

I am actually almost more proud of the time at this race than Ogden due to the turnaround in 3 weeks as well as a much harder course. In fact, I took almost 7 minutes off my time from last year (even trying to rehab a aching knee). So, this race ranks up there for personal effort and accomplishment and tells me that with the proper training and attitude, you really can push yourself to do more than you think possible.

However, I still think Odgen is probably the best race/course I have run so far (good org, pretty, very runner friendly PR course). Looking forward to St. George!

From James on Mon, Jun 11, 2007 at 14:36:25

St. George blows Ogden out of the water in every aspect!

I guess my question should have been, do you think you could have run faster on Saturday at Ogden than you did 3 weeks ago? Because you didn't run much slower and were still pretty much in recovery time.

From jtshad on Mon, Jun 11, 2007 at 14:45:49

Looking back, I think I probably could have pushed it harder for a better time. I think back and feel that I should have run miles 18-21 a bit faster than I did to use the canyon better. But at the time of the races, I didn't want to burn out before the last 3M in Ogden. Amazingly enough, afte both of these races I felt great (at least the next day), so I feel that maybe I could have pushed harder (at TDM I should have kept the pace up with Clyde longer because my knee doesn't feel too bad). So, I think to get to the next step, I need to increase my endurance training, focus on my form and add a little more actual "speedwork" to my routine (if I can somehow find the time) to lower my times.

From James on Mon, Jun 11, 2007 at 15:22:47

Well, I was very impressed, and glad that you were running a marathon instead of me. I am in the same boat as you but probably need to increase a few more things besides speedwork. I felt good after Ogden but was extra careful to make sure that I was recovered before I got back into things. The best thing I have going for me is right now constistancy in my training; plus a few kick in the butt races to help me realize that I needed to train harder. Keep up the awesome running, but first, have a nice recovery.

Jeff, Great job on Sat's race. I got a call from Clyde soon ofter the race was over and I heard how you guys were zooming through the first half. Good to hear you're recovery is going well. Keep up the good work!

From jtshad on Tue, Jun 12, 2007 at 15:16:00

Steve, thanks for the note. It was great racing such a great runner as Clyde, just wish I could have stayed closer for the second half!

Didn't know if you saw my note, but I would be interested in picking your brain about your running store. Send me a note sometime (email above or Clyde has it) if you feel comfortable doing so.

Jeff, I would be happy to answer any questions you might have about the store. Feel free to shoot me an email anytime:
