PM: Trails 115' w/ 1000 feet of gain

Almost went headfirst into the gorge at one point. I am remind that although trail running is not extreme it has its hidden dangers. At the Wissahickon isn't that deep but 200-300 feet will still do some damage.

I ran into a tree a couple races ago! Steep downhill followed by a sharp turn...ow.

I'm interested in the other reasons, Jeff. But you do have to be careful. A wake up for sure. And I wasn't running fast at all. I think I'm pretty cautious on the trails compared to others, even those who are overall slower than me.

I saw a photo of Camille Heron a while back. Ran into a tree and was all bloody and muddy. I also worry about branches in the eye.

I'm scared of heights but when I'm running it's less noticeable.

I like the "flow" of the roads, the consistency of pace and effort and the ability to relieve stress by letting my mind wander as I don't have to focus on running all the time (running surface)...not to mention convenience of roads. While I appreciate the beauty and connection to nature on the trails, you have to be constantly vigilant and watching the trail to make sure you don't go down. Not saying I don't like to hit a trail now and again, but I know many friends who have converted over to trails only/primarily.

I hear you. I hate so few miles for so much time. But I spent most of spring running 9:00-9:30 pace for easy runs. But that felt truly easy, conversational pace+. 9:00 pace on these trails is really quite moderate for me.

I'll probably always be a road man myself, but one of the trail heads is a kilometer jog from our apartment.

I've taken some branches in the forehead (on sidewalks!!!) on early morning runs. A couple times it was scary to think about what would have happened had the branch been two inches lower. That's why I pretty much always run in sunglasses :-)
