| 5 x 800 today. The footing sucked as it had snowed about 2-3 inches overnight and the streets were still pretty covered. I made do tho, temps were mid 20s with winchills around 15 at the start of the workout and 10 by the end. The wind was really picking up out of the north. Took 2 min recovery for the first 3 800s and 2:30 on the last two. Splits: 1- 2:46.7 2- 2:44.2 3- 2:45.5 4- 2:44.6 5- 2:43.9 Overall, I was very happy with this workout. I was hoping to be between 2:50-3:00 honestly. I figured on no speed work I'd be in trouble. Although I was gassed by the 5th rep, the splits were very even and not too bad for 3 weeks of running. Afterwards, did weights and took some protein.

| Absolutely terrible running conditions today. Got 9 inches of snow from yesterday and overnight and although some was plowed, the footing was horrible everywhere. I slid all over the place and had to slow it way down and be cautious. On top of it all, I have a sore throat and stuffed up head. All told, 4.7 (kind of got off track with all the snow) in 34:51, 7:25 avg pace. |

| very cold outside today, winchills below 0 so i went to the indoor track facility at iowa state and did some repeat miles. Struggled a little bit, but it was nice to get 3 reps in. Splits: 1- 5:54.9 2- 5:50.6 3- 5:51.6 Took 3 min break between each. had a decent cooldown and warmup. Did weights and took protein afterwards.

Great workout today. Went inside on the indoor track and did a 3 mile tempo run, 16 laps on that lil 300 meter track. Definitely had to push through the last 1200, but still nailed my pace each lap and was quite steady throughout the workout. Not only were my GHMP miles very even, my warmup and cooldown mileage was done in 7:11 pace. splits: 1- 6:04.7 2- 6:04.9 3- 6:05.6 TOTAL-- 18:15, 6:05 pace; note that all my miles were within 1 second of each other, definitely an encouraging sign going forward.

| almost jumbo jet day, not only did it feel like I had one on my back, but my first two mile splits were 7:47 and 7:37--a 7:27 or 7:57 on the last mile and I'd of had the airplane trifecta, instead my last one was 7:31 for a total time of 22:56, 7:39 avg. I needed slow today and thats what I got, so i should be good to go on tomorrow's long-ish run of 7. Around 14 degrees with wc around 2 today. |

The super cold weather lately has prevented any melting on the roadways and sidewalks so anything left unplowed is now tough sledding. temps around 10, with windchills also 10. Kind of a makeshift speedworkout today. Went indoors due to the bitter cold. Was gonna try for 3.5 tempo, but stopped abruptly at 3350 meters or 2.1 miles. Then decided to run a mile and an 800 afterwards in repeat fashion with about 3 min break between each. weird but solid workout today. Went indoors as the temp is 0 and the windchill is -15. the main track is preparing for a track meet, so i went upstairs on the elevated track. wanted to do a fartlek, but with so many people on that track i decided just to run relatively hard. Ended up running faster than GMP, but slower than GHMP, almost exactly right in the middle. did a warmup and then went right into the run without stopping to stretch...almost thought my first mile would count towards the workout, but ended up hittin that in 7:09, still relatively higher end of GMP but too normal of pace to count as anything other than a warmup. Splits: 1- 6:31.4 2- 6:34.5 3- 6:33.8 4- 6:29.9 TOTAL for 4 miles-- 26:09, 6:32 pace did weights afterwards

had planned to do 14x400 today but ran short on time so had to just do an effort based workout. Did fartlek for 6.5 miles with 4x3x2x1 on with 1 min off between reps and 2 min between the sets. Did 2 sets of that with a final 5 min on at the end after just a final 1 min set break. Estimated it to be around 4 miles hard. ran for a total of 44 min and 37 seconds for what was measured at 6.5 miles. which amounts to 6:52 pace overall with on and off included. felt pretty sluggish and legs were definitely tired, next week will be a much needed cutback week.weather was great! around 35 with light winds.

Ideally I would be under 18 minutes, but anything reasonably fast would constitute a good speed workout and thats super important at this stage in my training. | 12th annual rosy cheeks run today, my 1st. Temps at race time were good for this time of year, right around 20 degrees with no wind. The roads were still covered in snow and ice so the footing was rough throughout. Didn't run a great time, but i also havent done much speed work and the footing was bad. I have worked more on tempo pacing which unsurprisingly my average splits today were about right on my tempo pace. So I'll take the positive out of it. only split I got was my first mile in 5:48. Total time was 18:31, 5:58 avg pace. Got a nice little trophy for winning my age group. Once again nothing to write home about, but it's a good gauge of where I'm at and I also didn't feel too bad running. So i think my half marathon pace is pretty solidly engrained in my mind. next week i will run a 5 mile race and my goal is to hit 30:00 exactly. Should be an interesting race. |

| 10 early this morning right after i woke up. got about an inch of snow overnight so the roads were slick in spots but overall pretty manageable. had some rougher miles in the middle of the run, but pushed through and ended with a nice run. Temp was 26 with wc at 18. Light snow showers during the run, but i was wearing shades to protect my eyes. | Very good workout today. Went indoors as the temp will remain below 0 today and windchills are between -15 and -20. did 6 x 1000 with 2:15 break, then at the end threw in a 400. First mile of my warmup was GMP. Splits on the repeats: 1- 3:29.9 (5:35 pace) 2- 3:30.8 (5:37 pace) 3- 3:27.4 (5:31 pace) 4- 3:28.0 (5:33 pace) 5- 3:30.1 (5:36 pace) 6- 3:28.8 (5:34 pace) 400 on the end- 1:17, 5:08 pace Overall a very good workout, i am very happy with a workout at those paces.

| 2 miles in 14:18, 7:09 pace. Felt really easy and fresh. Weather is getting better too, mid-30s with wc's in the high 20s. Should be similar temps for race time tomorrow. Gonna run a 5 mile road race in Des Moines. Although I have run 27:33 for an 8k before, tomorrow my goal is hit 30:00 exactly. It'd be a great achievement to hold that pace for 5 miles and hit that time right on. It would definitely be a boost for my sub 1:20 half hopes later in the spring. |

| Ran the Red Flannel Run today, my first time running this annual event. About 700 people ran the 5 mile and about 1300 ran the 3 mile. Its becoming a very big event. My goal was to hit 30:00, however I missed it by 26 seconds. I started off a little fast, probably ran the first 2 mile in 11:30-11:45, then slowed considerably as I found no one to run with. Didn't get any real splits cuz the miles werent marked. my 30:26 is good for 6:05 avg and is still a great effort for this early in the year. I started out at what felt easy and went from there. Two things of note: weather was around 30 degrees and it felt awesome and so did I, felt really fresh. Also, after the first half mile i did not get passed, instead I picked off people from there to the finish, its a nice feeling to go out easy and reel in everyone who went out too fast. a good training run, very happy with the results. |

| 12 miles today. Didnt feel the best, had some GI issues and some overall soreness that hampered my effort. I still turned in a pretty decent run though. The weather was great, temp of 43 with windchill of 37, i wore shorts and it felt awesome. | 5 mile tempo today. Felt really sluggish and my legs had no pop in them. Still managed to struggle through and put up a decent average. | GMP run today. weather was near 50 and pretty nice. All my splits were at the lower end of GMP and one was technically tempo. Also, my GMP miles today were more indicative of what i hope to run in the middle to end of the marathon, not at the start. If i start out at the paces I held today, ill prolly tank. So I needa go out right near 7 and hold that on race day. Splits: 1- 6:56.4 2- 6:37.3 3- 6:48.8 4- 6:46.7 5- 6:47.4 6- 6:47.1 7- 6:50.3 TOTAL-- 47:34, 6:48 avg pace overall, i felt really good on this run. | Not a great workout today. Was going to try for 6 mile tempo, but due to several factors, i ended up with just enough energy for 2x3200, individual mile splits at 6:04, 6:11, 5:58, 6:20. The limiting factors were running on an empty stomach, running soon after waking up, and weights yesterday. Just kind of a perfect storm of negative factors and to top it all off, the weather is in the mid20s with windchill at 14. I still put up a lot of miles because after being frustrated with my workout I decided to bury my legs with mileage. No more morning speedwork or at least not without breakfast. |

| tough workout today. It was cold and rainy so I ran on the indoor track. I did 6x800 and felt pretty sluggish. | Ran the March for Malawi 5k today. I was signed up for a 10 miler in lincoln, nebraska, but the forecast of snow scared me away. i didnt want to travel 3 and a half hours to get in trouble in the snow, so i just ran the local 5k. It was bitterly cold cuz the east wind was blowing, it was 28 but wc was like 15. Ended up at 18:29, there were no mile splits, but they couldnt have been great. I did get better as the race went on. They had the kilometers roughly marked and i did run faster the last 3. I even caught the 3rd place guy in the last K. He made the mistake of looking back at me which I know is the kiss of death. After that, i picked it up and passed him with about 400 to go. not super happy with the time, but it was a good effort given the conditions. |

| pretty killer workout today. 20x400 with 1 minutes off between each, about the most self-imposed torture you can put on yourself! Hit all my splits between 1:18-1:20, was very steady throughout. The last 2 repeats I hit 76 and 74 seconds respectively as i opened it up just a little to see what i had left--not much it turned out. Below are my mile splits all added up: 5:17, 5:16, 5:16, 5:16, 5:08 26:13 total, a little under 5:15 avg pace for each of the 400s. weights afterwards, and im spent!

| Weird workout today just because of how it all transpired. Originally, today was to be 4x1600 day, however i was really tight upon starting my warmup so i just decided to hit 7 easy and do speed work tomorrow. | Not a great overall time, but there were a lot of positives to take from this race. My first mile was 5:38 and it felt easy, which is nice, then we hit the hills and my times fell off even though i felt i was maintaining...definitely need to continue to build speed. somehow my 18:27 was good enough for 2nd place which netted me $25 cash, so with the entry fee (15) i came out $10 ahead. not too shabby for a foggy april morning. |

AM- hot and humid today. Expecting big storms later, but the heat is tough right now cuz its 20-25 degrees above normal for this time of year. Just 2 weeks ago, i was running in tights and hats and gloves. 7 miles in 51:11, 7:19 avg pace. weights after.
PM- an unprecedented and unplanned 2nd run this evening. Since I have been struggling with my long runs as of late i decided to instead do two runs. I had even done weights and eaten a pizza after my first run. Plus, i had just topped off an iced coffee and a pb & j sandwich, and yet the thought hit me to go run again. The results were phenomenal, I absolutely killed it and i felt tremendous..which was surprising given 7 previous miles plus weights earlier. | awesome workout today. it is pouring rain and cold and really windy so i went on the indoor track. Did 4x mile repeats. Warmup mile was 6:51, so GMP, one of the cooldown miles was under 7 also so another GMP. Felt really good and felt pretty smooth during the repeats. Splits (with 3 minute rep breaks):
1- 5:42.9 2- 5:35.6 3- 5:38.5 4- 5:35.6 Overall, it felt great to hit all my miles within a cluster of 7 seconds. Very even paced workout. I didnt feel like I was pushing too hard either, so technically i felt as if i was doing tempo, but since I havent had a workout of this caliber in a while, ill call them VO2 max miles.

The kicker is to hit them all at GHMP, and that is what i did today. | Horrible race today. Worst half-marathon I've ever run. Don't wanna dwell on it, but i did start off very well. Felt comfortable the first couple miles. 6:03, 6:06, 6:09, 6:03, 6:16, 30:37 through 5 miles, then the wheels came off. Hit a 6:48 for the 6th mile and just completely fell apart. Felt like walking off the course and taking a DNF. had to struggle with that decision for the last 8 miles. Had a golden opportunity and almost took it but decided I would finish. Im glad I did in retrospect, because I am not a quitter. However, I basically jogged in and finished in 1:28:03, 6:43 pace...my worst half-marathon by 6 minutes. I have run faster than this in training. Moral of the story, sometimes you just dont show up and today i didnt. I think i am going to focus on shorter races...i felt great through 5...just had nothing after. Need to forget this one quickly. |

| broke out the old blue shoes for my pre-race 3 miles today. beautiful weather, 63 and sunny, felt like summer! 3 miles in 22:16, 7:25 avg pace. Tomorrow marks the start of a rash of 5ks that I'll be running this summer. My ultimate goal is to PR by the end of the summer (16:38). My dream goal would be to break 16:00, that is a long ways off though. For tomorrow, I just want to get back under 18:00 and build some speed.

| Ran a local 5k today, not much competition showed up as there are something like 25 races throughout the state this weekend i heard. Upon seeing the rather thin crowd I decided that my strategy would be to lay waste to the field with a good 1st mile. However, my victory was not a crushing one nor was it predestined. Right before the start I saw an older guy show up that I had seen before and knew he was fast. So I figured it'd be a 2 person race, unless I could drop him. Weather was great, 55 at the start with light wind. I went out and led through the first mile with a 5:30. I could still hear the older guy breathing behind me, so I kept my pace up to try to shake him, rolled through the 2nd mile in a 5:50, and he still sounded the same distance back based on his breathing (i never look back cuz its a sign of weakness and it always give the other person a confidence boost, so i never did see how far he was back, just had to gauge it by hearing). The third mile had two pretty decent uphills including a long gradual incline to the finish which was actually quite taxing given my lack of hillwork. I closed the last 1.1 in 6:27 (roughly 5:50 and :37 for the .1). I ended up winning with a time of 17:48 and the older guy, who i figured out later was 49 years old! ran a 17:52 to finish a strong 2nd. I lead wire to wire and although the 2nd place guy pushed me to keep a good pace and made it hurt, he never got close enough to pass me. Although not a blazing time, it is a nice step in the right direction, and I felt pretty good also. It was also nice to win, especially given the award was a $50 gift certificate to a local running store where I will now be purchasing my next pair of shoes! |

Local 5k today for a great cause. Childserve is an organization in Des Moines that assists kids with disabilities. This race was especially important to me because my wife's step-brother, mason, has cerebral palsy and gets assistance from Childserve. I've been wanting to run this for the last few years and finally got my chance today. A little cold for mid-may as it was high 40s with strong north winds and light rain making it feel colder. Met up with my good friend from high school, andrew minear, at the start line. We were really close freinds in hs and he inspired me to get into cross country and running. Today was his day as he ended up beating me. The Race: Woke up at 5:55 am, did the normal pre-race routine. Met up with andrew at the start and got caught up as i havent seen him in a few months. He informed me that he and his wife are expecting, which is awesome. Got to the start and took off. andrew pulled away in the first mile, i laid back in a chase pack of about 3 guys to try to conserve some energy going nto the wind. My strategy was to outlast andrew and catch him on the return trip where the wind was at our back. First mile flew by in 5:37.6. At this point i threw in a surge and broke up the chase pack. It was now a 2 person race between andrew and I. I closed within 5-7 seconds of him at one point during the 2nd mile but could just never get close enough to get him. 2nd mile was a negative split at 5:30.8 (11:08). I tried to rein him in during the last mile, but had no such luck. Final mile split was 5:40.1, with the final .1 being 32.8 seconds. Crossed the line in 17:21, andrew had finished in 16:51, a very good race for him. Official results said 17:22 and the online results are all messed up cuz they moved everyone back a place so those results arent correct. Overall, very happy to have run such even splits on a great course for a great cause. Very well organized as well. Also, if im going to lose i couldnt be happier that the winner was a good friend. After the race, i stopped by my father-in-law's house and gave mason my 2nd place medal. He thought that was the coolest thing ever, which made my day and helped put into perspective how awesome of cause this race was for.

| Ran a local 5k today, pretty good prizes on the line, 1st-3rd got 200, 100, and 50 dollar gift cards to a local running store, respectively. I ended up 3rd. I ran terrible though, just had one of those races where my legs were dead. I was hurting before the first 1k and couldnt muster any surges later in the race. Was actually pretty lucky to hang on to 3rd. first mile was 5:42, 2nd was 5:52, third was 5:48 and last ".1" was :29. Total was 17:54, they had me officially at 17:56. moral of the story, i kind of trained through this one and even though it wasnt a great race, ill take the 50 dollar gift card...goes well with the other 50 dollar gc i won to the same store earlier this month. this coming saturday, the 4th, represents my first true goal race of the season as i set to break a local 5k record. taper will be occuring.

Won my 2nd straight Conrad race today. My goal this year was the same as last year--to break the course record and win 50 bux. It's such a challenging course. 5:25, 5:54, and 6:50 for the final 1.1. I asked the race director after the race why the course was so tough, he said the last 1.1 is a 2 to 3 degree incline based on an old railroad incline. So its deceptive because its not a huge hill to the eye, but it slowly breaks you down. Splits were not too reliable, and overall time was 18:13. The only thing I really took from this race, besides the win, was the strategy that played out as I raced the 2nd place guy. He led the first mile, i surged at the marker and led the 2nd mile, he hung on and took back over in the 3rd mile, but i stayed on his tail. I was waiting until 600-400 meters to make my final move, but about 800 to go, he simply stopped. I dunno if he just gave up or my strategy of baiting him just broke him, but it was nice to win a tactical battle like that--although it was discouraging to not have anyone to push me through the final half mile, would have made for a much better time.

| I don't usually denote a course being long but today was at least .05 long if not a full .1. Put up a good battle with a high school standout but still led wire to wire to win the race. first mile was slow in 5:37, 2nd was 5:58, threw in a surge at the third mile which dropped my competitor for good and hit 5:50, closed total in 18:05..once again, not a great time but i did enough to win and i do believe the course was a tad long. I also did not feel up to par today, just felt sluggish and couldn't really find that next gear. on the bright side, i was awarded $50 for my efforts, which is always nice. I also feel good about being able to negative split the last mile. |

| Ran the clive race today. i've run this race in 2008 and 2010 and ran really well both times, but they completely moved the race to a different location and thus a different course. I know ive complained about courses lately, but this one was the worst. It was probably close on actual distance, but it was hillier than hilly. I don't do hills well haha! first mile was 5:34, 2nd was 6:05 and last 1.1 was 6:50 or something. I dunno, i did not enjoy this race and just felt tired the whole time. 70 degrees with 95% humidity also hampered efforts as the winner only ran 17:05 and 2nd and third were 18 and 18:02 respectively. Slow times all around, mine included. |

| Carlisle 5k today, my favorite race of the year cuz its my hometown event. my workouts werent indicating a breakthrough and i have struggled during my speedwork and those two signs were evident today as i had a hard time getting any kind of turnover throughout the race...especially when i needed it. one of my best friends, andrew, came down from bondurant to pace me the 2nd half. I tried to talk him into doing the whole thing with me cuz when we race together we feed off each other really well. in fact, last time we raced carlisle together we both PR'ed and both of those still stand today. he is training for a half though and insisted on pacing me. first mile I laid an egg, went through in 5:42. granted this stretch is largely uphill, in the past ive hit around 5:20. i just didnt have much pop coming out the gate. halfway through mile 2 i was about 10 seconds back of the leader, the same kid who has got 3rd 3 years in a row. andrew hopped in the race about 1.5 and became my rabbit. It was super nice to have a pacesetter because he was able to help me rise above my mid-race blues that have plagued my races lately. 2nd mile was 5:37, 11:19 at the 2 mile mark, 5:40 almost on the nose. andrew kept pushing me and did a wonderful job of being a pacesetter. for a while, the leader actually started coming back to me, but the lack of turnover bit me hard when i needed a burst of speed just after mile 2 entering the final smaller hills. i took the last mile in 5:44 and ran :31 for the .1 for a 17:36 clocking. Not a great time by any stretch, but a respectable time for the hot conditions on this course which many people find very difficult. Overall, i need to step back and ramp my mileage up while adding in some better speedwork if i plan to get below 16. I havent been close this summer, and i havent had any really great workouts or races yet. i'll finish out my summer season and then get back to the drawing board to figure out how to get where i want to go.

| kind of just ran today, had a general idea of the course length but just kept adding. didn't wake up this morning for my 5k which is fine, saved some money on the late entry fee and got some needed rest. today's splits were 1:00:08 for 8.4 miles, 7:10 pace. pretty hot weather still at 6 pm when i hit the roads, but it was pretty typical for the 4th of july. nice to get a decent workout in.

| ive wanted to do this race for several years and finally had the chance since i was staying nearby this weekend. i was doing alright for the first few miles and then the two massive, and i mean massive hills started. Eastern Iowa is hilly! i ran 5:48 on the first mile and 5:41 on the second mile, on a flat course i think id of challenged 23:00, but i ran the hilly miles in 6:35 and 6:28. not too disappointed given the challenging course. my new plan is to take a week off here and regroup and restructure a new training plan. |

| Did my first ever triathlon today, and i won the whole thing! i couldnt believe it. no official race times available yet aside from my overall time of 59:03 (it was my goal to be under an hour). the race was a 300 m swim, 15k bike (9.3 miles), and 5k run. it was in an outdoor pool so it was staggered swim start. i was 9th into the water, i came out 9th, managed about a 5:30, which is decent for me, although very average in the grand scheme of things. passed a few people on the bike, but mostly just maintained. was about 5 minutes down off the bike. since i am a runner, the run is where i blew everyone's doors off. I ran the 5k in 18:11, which i was super happy with after an extended effort on the bike and in the pool. that time was about 3 min faster than anyone else on the run and gained at least the 5 min deficit on the leader. i didnt cross the finish line first, so heading to the awards ceremony, itw as anyones race. we had to wait for them to calculate the times and remove the stagger (small town race so this took a while). after i didnt get an age group medal i knew something was up, then they announced the overall winners and they said my name. it was super exciting! i won a massive trophy that took up almost the entrie back seat of the car. I was just wanting to finish strong and have fun at my first triathlon and ended up winning the whole thing!!! furthermore, i think i may have a new passion, tri's are addicting and i think i will be doing many more to come.

| The day after my first tri i did the warrior dash. This whole weekend revolved around my wife and I along with 3 of our friends taking a trip to do the tri and the warrior dash. the warrior dash capped off the weekend. supposedly the dash is 5k, but it was more like 6k. the course is very hilly and muddy and includes a lot of thickets and underbrush. along the way are several obstacles ranging from water crossings to netclimbs to balance beams, monkey bars, tires, and a hay bale mountain. the last two obstacles are the most extreme--jumping over burning logs and swimming through a 30 foot long mud pool with barb wire about a foot overhead. very fun race, very hard as well. super hot temperatures made it very difficult. I decided to run fast to see where i could place and i ended up 11th out of about 4700 and i found out later i won my age group out of about 600. pretty cool to do so well after doing a tri the day before and given all the obstacles. being covered in mud was pretty awesome too! |

| 7 today in the wet conditions, been raining all day, and although it had stopped for my run i still got pretty wet and muddy. nice temps tho, mid-60s, very good for a shakeout run. i didnt have splits, but once i hit the greenbelt trail i was able to get random cross-sections for my run because there are markers on the trail, the 4 random splits i got mid-run were 6:51, 6:52, and then later 7:05 and 7:05. i was able to get the turnaround, which was 3.5 miles in 24:25, 6:59 pace, so apparently the first half was decently paced. | did the tri relay with my wife on the swim and my buddy on the bike. I passed a ton of people on the run and it was fun to have targets to chase down. Definitely a blast. Going into the 10k i felt like I would just use it as a tempo and thats effectively what happened. Got a great workout in and had a nice fitness check as far as being able to hold 6's go. Splits: 1- 5:51.1 2- 6:02.3 3- 6:01.1 (17:54, 5:58 pace) 4- 6:10.9 5- 6:16.9 6- 6:19.5 (18:45, 6:15 pace, +:51 second split)
last .25-- 1:22 (5:28 pace, not bad up a big hill)
TOTAL-- 38:04, 6:05 avg pace. Overall, a good workout. you can see where fatigue began to play a role and that is a sign of what kind of shape im in, steady through about 4.

| awesome workout tonight after work, weather was gorgeous, 72 with light winds and no humidity. i decided to do a mile off, mile on format, kind of an extended fartlek, at first i wasnt gonna stop and run the whole thing outright, but i did catch myself taking a 10-20 second break after some of the harder miles, otherwise this run was pretty much continuous. 3rd year in a row doing the cap pursuit 5k. always love this race! got out feeling pretty good and really just maintained a steady pace throughout, didnt slow down much and didnt speed up too much. A nice gauge of my current fitness going into some more fall races. weather was perfect, light winds and mid to upper 40s. splits:
1- 5:34.4 2- 5:46.5 3- 5:20.0 (marker was off) last .1-- :57 (marker was off) last 1.1 was total of 6:17, so probably actually a 5:40ish and a 35-37 second final .1 as i had a decent kick today. once again, positives in this race were steady pace and i felt great. pace actually felt pretty easy. for my efforts i got a $30 gc to a local running store, so looks like my next pair of running shoes will be discounted. steady uptick in mileage this week as i keep pounding away.

got out for a tempo tonight. wanted to keep the first 3 miles decent paced so that when i dropped into GhMP tempo after that it would simulate the later miles in a race cuz it was indeed the later miles in the run. worked pretty good, but i could tell that my legs were tired from all the mileage lately as i labored a little despite the decent rhythm i got into. splits: 1- 6:46.0 2- 6:47.4 3- 6:51.8 (20:25, 6:48 avg for pre-tempo miles) then i dropped it down 4- 6:08.4 5- 6:04.9 6- 6:08.8 7- 6:07.6 8- 6:07.5 (5 miles tempo in 30:36, 6:07 pace, right on sub 1:20 pace..like 1:19:58 lol) 9 & 10- 15:12, 7:36 pace TOTAL time was irrelevant but it was 1:06:14, 6:37 pace. overall, very happy with the pace workout given the tired legs and the attempt at making these miles "later race" miles.

| Been wanting to run this race in years past and finally got a chance today. However, i have never toed the line feeling more dead and sore than i did today because today was right after a 60 mile week, my first ever at that mileage. Thus, my legs were tired, but i wanted to run nonetheless so tired legs aside i figured itd be good speedwork as long as i didnt aggravate any of my sore spots into worse injuries. Got out easy and was surprised at the first split-- 5:40, was thinking id be around 5:25-5:30, but just had no pop in the legs. next split was 5:58, final was 5:53, with a :29 second sprint kick to come in just above 18 minutes and 5:49 pace. Overall, i was actually very happy with how this one turned out. given how i felt yesterday and before the race, i figured id be lucky to get through it uninjured, but i managed a decent pace and even had a nice kick uphill at the end. Not my best 5k by any means, but i knew that it wouldnt be going in and im okay with that. My goal race is in 2 weeks and that is where all the mileage will pay off. | 14 miler tonight, felt okay, not super great though which came as a surprise. tried to go 6 miles relatively easy then drop it into GHMP (6:00-6:10) but had big time trouble maintaining that pace late. a little concerned, but not too much, it happens sometimes. | 7.5 after work tonight, hit the first 2 in 6:50 and 6:51 respectively, the rest were consistently slower as i consciously slowed my pace. Total time was 53:42, 7:10 avg pace, anchored by a 7:44 uphill final mile that was rough. Still very warm out for this late in the year.

squandered a great opportunity today. weather conditions were perfect, course wasnt too bad (cept for the last mile was crazy hilly), good competition to run with..but all those advantages were lost to GI issues, i couldn't push it late in the race cuz my stomach was cramping and i was having major issues there. not really sure why this came to be, but it definitely cost me a good race. you can see it in my splits: 5:29, 5:40 (11:10, 5:35 pace at 2 mile) then hit 6:11 on an uphill and stomach issue laden 3rd mile, closed .1 in 35. I know im still coming off a pretty good week (for me) mileage wise, so i wasnt expecting to fly, but i know i gave one away today and could have run much faster if not for the problems i experienced. o well, thats running i guess.
In other news..taper time for the des moines half marathon a week from today.

| rainy 6 tonight as i made one of the biggest decisions of my running life...im still sorting it out, i have decided to up my registration to the full marathon this weekend. i am not specifically trained for the full, but i think that it is a now or never type deal, and i have put up more weekly mileage than at any point ever before. Thus, my goal is to finish..period. i want to do a marathon..period. once i do a marathon, i will have crossed it off my list, and maybe the 1:20 half wont seem as daunting. My half-marathon specific workouts have been lackluster as of late...not that a 1:20 was going to be impossible..its just one of those things that i feel like the full is the right decision. I'll be hurting afterwards, but i wanna get it out of the way and call myself a marathoner. Tonight's 6 felt easy and smooth, 6:59, 6:46, 6:48, 6:50, 6:54, 7:20 hill, total...41:39, 6:56.5 avg pace. Although i have no specific time goal for the marathon this weekend, i want to go out about 7:00-7:10 for the first couple of miles and shoot for 1:30 in the half. Very slow and very methodical and easy. Now to find the right shoes...

| purchased a new pair of shoes today, they will be my marathon shoes, Asics DS trainers, i like how they are light but still have a lot of cushion, plus they have the fit of asics, a shoe that i have always found comfortable. Not only will I use them for the marathon but i will definitely log some miles in them after. Got out for 4.5 tonight, 6:47, 6:52, 6:59, 7:15 hill, 3:31 half mile, total 31:26, 6:59 pace. Felt very easy, i coulda busted a big one tonight but i guess that is what tapering is for. I feel so out of sorts but its just cuz ive cut back so much. The new shoes felt great and i just felt really comfortable running tonight.

My 1st marathon!! Here is the official race report. Pre-Race I made sure to taper all week and i also made sure to monitor what i was eating in the last few days before the race.given the GI issues of late, i made sure to monitor this part. 2 days out it was all wheat spaghetti all day as i carb-loaded, 1 day out it was white rice for lunch and white bread sandwich and just lean turkey for dinner. race day morning i woke up at 4:45 and had 2 pieces of no fructose white italian bread. Got downtown about 6:50 and found a parking garage to park in. It was pretty neat cuz the sky was just lightening and yet the city was so alive with all the people moving around. Went and used the restroom, repeated this once and also went for about a .5 mile run to stretch my legs. Did some static stretching then went to the line to get ready for the race. Didn't do another bathroom break, so my last one was about 45 minutes before the race, it worked out that that was a good move. weather was near perfect, high 40s and low 50s for much of the race, light winds and no rain, but not abundant sunshine either, very good running weather.
the Race: started off super easy. I wanted to be up near the front so my gun time matched my chip time, but i didnt wanna take off like i usually do, so i got out and moved way over on the road while i settled in a pace that felt very pedestrian but it was a pace i knew i had to maintain. Here were my splits on the tremendously easy feeling 1st half: 1- 7:04.2 2- 6:46.4 3- 6:56.5 4- 7:12.0 (27:59, right on 7 pace) 5- 6:57.1 6- 7:01.9 7- 6:55.0 8- 7:16.7 (56:09, 7:01 pace through the first 8 miles which included nearly all of the course's major hills) 9- 6:55.2 10 & 11- missed the mile marker cuz i was getting water from the aid station, 13:39, 6:50 avg pace 12- 6:48.9 13- 7:04.8 half-marathon- 13.1-- 1:31:26, 6:59 pace, felt very easy and relaxed 14- 7:06 15- 7:06 16- 7:08 (1:52:01, 7:00 pace)
this is where things started to go south
17- 8:10 (had to stop to adjust my shoes as all of a sudden they felt way to tight and my feet were on fire cuz it felt like my circulation was getting cut off) 18- 8:54, walk breaks have occured 19- 8:06, last mile where i deemed it reasonable to keep splits last 7.2- 1:08:06, 9:27 mile pace, these miles included many walk breaks as my feet were killing me (probably the new shoes) and my legs were just dead I DONT THINK THE EARLY PACE IS WHAT KILLED ME, instead it was the lack of training mileage. My longest run ever was 17 miles going into this race and on this training cycle i only hit 14. thus, it is no surprise i blew up at 17. That being said, the last 9 miles were a struggle and finishing took a lot of will power as it would have been a lot easier to stop, but i knew i had to push through. Took my final walk break just before turning onto the home stretch (about .4 on 3rd ave) i ran it in and crossed in 3:25:05. Not the best time in the world especially given my walk breaks, but it made me a marathoner. When i crossed that line, my life changed because i had done something that not many other people have done and i was proud of the accomplishment. POST RACE: I ate everything in sight. Right after the race i was incredibly hungry and so i chowed on pulled pork, a banana, pizza, and chocolate milk. Even as i write this report today, i am still hungry. I am also incredibly sore. my body feels like it has been put through the ringer and walking is a chore. hopefully some more rest will help that.
Some closing thoughts:
1. super happy to have finished my 1st marathon 2. too bad a marathon has to be two halfs..first half was perfectly paced 1:31:24, just at 6:59 pace, 2nd half was 1:55 with several necessary walk breaks 3. i was undertrained, and i knew that going in, so i was not at all surprised that the wall kicked my butt 4. that being said, i was very proud of myself to muscle through the last 10k, that was the hardest 6.2 miles ive ever experienced, but i dug deep, got tough and finished!! 5. I think i utilized good race strategy, i drank something at almost every aid station, mostly water, only a few gatorades, i gu'ed twice, once between 9 and 10 and once at about 18, i avoided stomach problems and it was only leg issues that cost me running the whole thing
6. did i mention i was super happy to have finished my 1st?

legs were quite tired after yesterday so i didnt want to push it with another run. after work went over to the urbandale pool and swam some laps, very nice zero impact cardio workout. probably did 1000-1200 meters all told. felt good to get some cross training in.

| really moved today, havent hit mile splits like today's in quite a while. Got out easy and decided I was going to throw down a hard mile ever other mile, i did this workout once before and hit pretty good splits, but today's were better. here were my real time splits as i ran continously: 1- 6:42.1 2- 5:18.3 (flat mile)
3- 6:44.4 4- 5:26.1 (flat mile with last 300-400 meters uphill) good finish 5- 7:35.7 huge uphill 6- 5:10.1 (huge downhill, just let it roll) ran the rest with a bathroom stop after mile 7, averaged about 7:06s, last mile felt GI issues big time so i only ran about 3/4 of it. overall, very nice speedwork, im happy with the consistency and the ease that i felt while carrying that pace.

| absoultely great workout tonight! ive never had a workout of this caliber, but i always knew i was capable of it. got out easy and then just opened it up and hit a great tempo run. ran the first 6 miles continuous then stopped to catch my breath before finishing the last 3 miles as a cooldown. splits: 1- 6:46.7 2- 6:08.8 3- 5:54.1 4- 5:44.7 5- 5:41.0 6-5:53.5 (36:08 through 6 miles, 6:01 pace INCLUDING a 6:46 slow 1st mile) some observations: i ran the 8k from 2-6 in 29:20, 5:52 pace, i ran the 4 miles from 3-6 in 23:12, 5:48 pace, ran the last 3 miles in 17:19, 5:46 pace, overall, very happy with the workout and the comfort at 5:40 pace, definitely a great tempo today

broke out the old racing shoes today for a 1 o clock start time, a very odd race start, but a welcome one given this time of year. weather was great today, 60 degrees, although it was a bit windy. I knew this course had a monster hill during the 2nd mile so i knew id ha e to be on top of my game today. My buddy Andrew won this one last year and he was there again this year so i met up with him for a warmup. felt pretty good, but was a little shakey from lack of food (not only from the late race start but the fact that it felt an hour later since daylight savings time was last night. I shrugged it off and got to the line and they fired the gun. I got out well and blazed the first mile in 5:24, i led after about 400 meters and could hear Andrew behind me til about 1.5. Hauled up the hill and was happy at the minimal drop off in effort, felt quite strong. Even with the downhill, the 2nd mile was still a 5:53 ish, hill was just too much. I let it all go the last mile cuz i felt wonderful, my legs were very fresh and my pace was smooth, hit the last mile in about 5:18-5:20 as my last 1.1 was 5:53. crossed the line 30 seconds ahead of Andrew who was 2nd in the field of about 300. Overall, i felt great. On a flat course today, I would have set a PR, no doubt about it. Given my splits, i gave about 30 seconds back on that hill which is understnadable given its size and duration. that being said a 17:09 on this course in the wind today is a very good time, and i am kind of bummed there was no flat races around--story could have been a lot different. had enough left at the end to run through the line and then had a nice cool down where I could have gone 5-10 miles but ended up going 2.5 to make it back in time for awards. I won free iowa state fair passes next year, a parking pass, and 2 front row tickets to any grandstand concert of my choice (pretty good value as they get pretty good bands!). Gonna keep riding this peak as the rash of mileage ive put up lately is definitely helping me. that marathon was a springboard for faster 5ks, the distance feels very short now.

| threw down today with some speedwork, cept it was in the continuous progressive type runs that ive been doing lately where i run a mile easy then hard then easy then hard. great weather, 60 degrees with a little wind. splits: 1- 6:41.9 2- 5:19.0 took a moments rest, then started jogging again immediately 3- 6:58.5 4- 5:12.3 took another brief rest then started running again, last couple miles were easy paced but i did throw 2 very hard 1/4 mile spurts in there to simulate a kick, probably 70-74 second pace. 45:01 avg pace for the entire run, 6:26 pace. overall, a very good workout and im happy with the splits, the last hard mile (the 5:12) i checked my 800 splits and i was at 2:39 first half then 2:33 second half, so nice speed to finish with. ice bath after

| was gonna do a time trial 5k today, but i randomly stopped a little after the 2 mile marker. this was a solo effot, and i was completely frozen, it was 30 degrees with wc in the low to mid 20s, i wore just race shorts a race top and arm warmers with glove and hat, definitely underdressed as my lungs were on fire, im not used to the cold yet. kind of bummed i didnt see this through to the 5k mark as i would have challenged sub 17, but the cold was killing my lungs. Other than that, i felt i had a really good pace through 2 miles, hit 5:24, and 5:36 respectively to make the even 11 minutes at the 2 mile, not bad for non-racing conditions and given the cold temps. |

| First off, i wanna start off by saying i measured this course online and it appears to be a touch short, maybe closer to 3 miles...regardless, i just show up and run races so if it is billed as a 5k, who am i to question that? that being said, i felt like the pace i ran was accurate to a 5k. got up early and drove to webster city, always try to do this race, they changed up the course a lot this last year, and its definitely for the better, a lot faster. very good weather for thanksgiving in iowa, 40 degrees at racetime with south winds, got up to mid-60s (record highs!) by afternoon. gun went off, and within the first 800 meters it was a 3 man race, this other guy and i decided to run down the leader together and we battled, we caught the leader about 2 miles in and all ran together til about 800 to go when the pack blew apart, the leader dropped off and the other guy i was with took off, i had battled and answered several surges all race long, it was a very strategic battle, but i couldnt cover his last move and he put 15 seconds on me to win, i came in second with my 2nd fastest clocking ever--16:43, i was 5 seconds from a PR. no splits on the course so i just have the overall time, but i am obviously very happy with that. felt wonderful running, had a lot of range as far as being able to surge and pace. only downside is the course was maybe a bit short, and i was also so close to PR-ing that it would have been nice to knock off 6 more seconds and set a new personal best, my 5k best has stood for 3 years now..its time for it to fall. In other news, my 11 year-old brother ran as well and in this his first 5k ever ran 23:40, a very impressive and surprising time given he just woke up and ran. i was very proud of him, he maybe has a future in this sport!

| some speed today, started out with a 6:46.9 mile to get the legs moving then dropped immediately into a 5:07.3 mile, really thought i was gonna break 5 minutes cuz i felt like i was moving on this one. if it was warmer than 38 degrees today that prolly would have happened, really pushed the pace and laid the hammer down. then did an easy mile then threw down a .3 in 1:30, which is 5:00 pace. ran .7 easy then threw down a 2:30 800 meter split (5:00 pace), cooled down for 1.5, all in all a very good workout, was happy with the speed i was able to show today. |

| What to say about this one...been watching the weather all week and it appeared like it would be 38 at the start and 90% rain chance, 38 is tough cuz it is the cutoff for shorts/tights for me. just before race time i looked and it was 42, it felt decent as well so the wind chill was minimal, maybe only 40, rain was light too. just about perfect for this time of year. (I love running in the rain..even cold rain). so i went with shorts, racing top, arm warmers, gloves and hat. Got started pretty good out the gate, about five of us guys got out together. answered several surges from the other guys in the early miles as they were keeping me honest...first mile, i was kinda shocked, 5:05, a little faster than i anticipated but i think the mile marker was off a little bit. 2nd mile was 5:39.6, which the marker was accurate for 2 miles but long compared to the first mile, so the 2 mile accurate split was 10:45, a very decent split. at this point there were 2 leaders out front and a chase pack of me and 2 other guys, i made my decisive move from the chase pack at this point and tried to pick off at least the 2nd place guy, plus i knew a pr was close so i wanted to finish strong. last 1.1 was 5:38.9, finished 3rd place and was pleasantly surprised to see 16:23 flash on the clock.definitely gave it all i had and poured my guts into that last mile.
I was ecstatic, still am. I never thought id PR in december, but it was ok weather and i love the rain. still got some bounce in my old shoes. The course may have been a little short, i heard several guys complain about this, and in measuring it quick, it indeed probably was a touch short, either way, i ran way too good to complain about a short course and to not count this as a PR. like ive said several times, im a runner, i show up and run, its the race directors job to worry about distance. i do this for fun, so if its billed as a 5k race, i will count it as such. plus, this course was so hilly that im even more impressed with my time. even if it was short, id of still been well under 16:45, possibly even PR territory. I plan to smoke all my pr's next year anyways, so this one wont stand for long, in the meantime im just gonna enjoy a great effort and a solid race! Very stoked right now!

| decided today that while i may have another fast 5k in me yet this season, there are no more opportune race options. everything this weekend looks fine distance and course wise, but the weather is horrible, 15 degrees with wc around 0...hard to PR in those conditions, so instead I have offcially ended my fall season. stinks cuz i was on such a hot streak, but my legs have been sore lately and i dont wanna risk injury with a big spring marathon in Prague coming up in may. thus, i will take 7-10 days and then begin marathon training. next summer after the mary, i will break 16 in the 5k. peace easy and happy holidays! |

| started my marathon training today, felt good to get back at it but i lost quite a bit of fitness in just 10 days...7:23.2, 7:22.9, 7:06.4, 21:52, 7:17 avg pace, never thought id wear shorts in middle december, high-40s even at 6pm. |

| 6 tonight to bring 2011 to a close..and what a year it was for running! I set PR's in distance run in a week, day, month, and year. I also accomplished some amazing (for me) races, especially during my fall training cycle. I ran my first marathon, i closed the year with 3 fast 5ks, the last being a PR 16:23! Overall, I was very happy with 2011 and i hope/know that 2012 will be even better. I have 3 goals: run over 2000 miles, break 16:00 in the 5k, and run 2 more marathons (hoping for sub 3:00). my first big race back will be in freiburg, germany in a half-marathon in april, i also plan on running the prague marathon in may. tonights run was a good one, 50 degrees, i sweated in a light hat, gloves, sleeves and shorts, never had such nice weather on dec. 31st before. splits: 1- 7:02.6 2- 7:06.8 3- 7:24.0 4- 7:07.8 5- 6:57.9 6- 7:00.4 TOTAL-- 42:39, 7:06.5 avg pace
