I wonder if it's the ceiling fan, or if I am ramping up too fast. After taking November and December off (basically), maybe I'm not ready for 7.5-7.8 miles per hour for 25 miles per week.

Another sad day of race reporting. This year I had run 524.7 miles (a few more than the 297.8 I ran last year) before the Ogden Marathon. But it turns out that no amount of training can over come the best FAWL (fast acting weight loss) plan - a.k.a the flu. On the positive side - this is the lightest I've ever been for a marathon! In fact, it's the lightest I've been in 15 years and 4 months! Since this is where I keep track of all the details, this may be long and boring, but I'll start with a very short race description: EPIC FAIL. Total time: 4:27:05.9. By my watch, the first half was 1:43.24 and the second half was 2:43:58 (4:27:22 total). I had a heart rate plan, with a time goal. Using data from my training this year, last year, and races from May and June last year, I figured (three different ways) that my training had me in line for a 3:18 marathon. Then after two all-nighters driving to and from Disneyland a couple weeks ago, I figure I lost about 4% of my fitness. So 3:26 seemed more like it. With a little heart, I thought I might PR, but probably wouldn't BQ. With a miracle, I might hit 3:09:58 - but I really didn't think that was going to happen. After packet pick-up, we hung around the expo, the kids played on the trains, then we went to my parents house for dinner (spaghetti and homemade bread stick) - it was delicious - and to spend the night.
The plan started with proper nutrition - breakfast at 4:15, 12-16 oz of gatorade and a couple Hammer Bars by 6:00 and one Gu at 6:45. Electrolytes/Gatorade every 4th mile starting at 3. Then Gu and water every 4th mile starting at 5. Reality - my daughter, who appeared fine all week, seemed to come down with something around bed time Friday night. Then I got whatever she had. By 3:50 a.m. I was down at least 2 lbs, but finally slept well, until my alarm sounded at 4:15. I didn't feel like eating anything. I thought about which would be worse - a DNF, or a DNS. Oh well, I got ready, then my mom took me to the buses. I chatted with a first time marathoner who wasn't sure he could finish and sipped Gatorade. I did my best to convince him that he could finish, and told him everything I could to give him the confidence to keep going. As we got off the bus he thanked me, asked his name and bib number - to which he replied "I'm Eli, but now your expecting too much." I said that I expected to see a time at the end and not a DNF. His time was 5:27! He had run 18 miles once before and hoped to not get kicked off the course at mile 17 at 11:30 (cut-off time to enter the canyon). I decided I had better eat something - a hammer bar. No frost, but before the sun came up it was definitely cold enough to see your breath. Got in line for the POPs and before too long the race was about to begin! Gu - a little thicker than I remember it... I lined up around the 8:00/mile - only because I heard so many people saying things like "Yeah, I can run a mile this fast!" sarcastically to their friends as they got in line way ahead of their ability. I would rather have started a little slower, but figured this would be right with that many people in the wrong place. Even with everyone starting off too fast, I was passing a lot of people the first couple miles.

I laid around with a bowl all day. I had a little Sprite around 3:30 pm. By 7:30 I was willing to try broth and a piece of toast. Every food sounded good, but the thought of actually eating did not. I knew it was just temporary (so I never said anything to anyone) but I did think I would be all right if I never ran another marathon.
Sunday was a soup and toast day. I thought I was feeling well enough that I would go for a run Monday morning. It's a good thing that we went for a walk Sunday, probably close to a mile, but just enough to realize that even if I felt ok, I still didn't have any fuel in my tank...

I've eaten them before, to test them, but hadn't ever eaten them then tried eating while running. His wife did the 10k in 55:11 - her first race longer than a 5K (28 minutes +). I drank about 14 oz. of water right before running. Last night I decided to go a little later than I would normally go to have a little more heat. I also ran with a shirt (I usually only do that when I'm on a treadmill). The cloud cover kept the heat around, so even at 6:30, it was still 75 degrees at the start of my run. It was a warm run! After, I tried soaking in the ditch in my front yard - it was freezing but worth it. On my run, I took with me one Hammer Gel (100 calories), 8 oz. of water, 24 oz. of Gatorade (150 calories), and one PowerBar Creamy Citrus Fruit Smoothie Energize Bar (210 calories). I ate the gel, 1/2 the PowerBar, drank the water and half the Gatorade.

I don't know what amount of time that will cut off, but my average HR was more than 5 bpm less than the race last year... I got out later than I had hoped - it was after 7:00 before I started. I suppose that is like the actual event, but I hope it's cooler in 3 weeks.

I was hoping that I could do these tempo repeats at 6:10 per mile. I've been attempting to have my MP training be at 6:46. If I could do that and have tempo runs be 6:10, I was looking at a 2:57+ marathon. The past three weeks, Monday runs were all 3x2miles at MP which I did around 6:50, 6:41 (both on the track) and 6:54 (TOU course - the hard part...). Before that, Mondays were tempos targeting 6:10, but one week was 6:38 (3x1.5) and 6:46 (4 miler). I think that what I've been calling MP training really looks a lot like tempo training. I'm think I can do the half in 1:24 (according to the McMillan running calculator, that puts me somewhere near 2:57 for the full - on the same type of course) since in a non-race situation, I did it in 1:27:36 last Friday (6:41 per mile - though there is over 600 ft of elevation drop...). I must have a weak 'internal governor' - knowing I have another repeat, I just seem to run hard enough to call it hard, but not hard enough to hit 6:10. I guess I need to do 1 mile all out, or 5k all out with no other plans for the day to see what kind of speed I really have. pm - 3.0 37:46.7 121/140 Very easy with wife.

I tried to use the last 5-6 weeks as an aerobic base building time - nearly all my runs were at an HR near 151 bpm, except about 6 miles on Mondays and long runs varied between MP+10% and progression runs.

I got up at 4:00 (planned on 4:20, but my crying daughter woke me early), got ready, ate a bowl of Frosted Shredded Wheats and was out the door before 4:30, so I saw at least 15 meteors of the Perseids Meteor Shower, and made it to work at a decent time. (I did wear a head lamp so I could find mile markers and check my HR at each one, but otherwise it was not turned on). 3. I used 8 oz. of water, 3 packets of Gu and about 20 oz. of Gatorade! My stomach felt a bit stretched after breakfast (after my run) and empty at 23.7, but for the most part was quite fine. 4. I didn't really focus on the progression portion (miles 20-26.2+), but my times still looked pretty good. 5. Best of all - after questioning whether I would even be able to do a long run after having knee problems (I've had knee problems since the 8th grade...) this week, I'm happy to report that there were only a few instances in this run when I really even noticed my knees (mostly my left). I was pretty tired the last 2 miles of this run, I could tell my posture was terrible running up the hill at the base of 1st Dam, so I worked on it.

We were at my grandparents 'cabin' (a double wide trailer in Sweet Water) so my kids didn't sleep so well. By 2:20, I realized it wasn't doing me any good to try sleeping, though I did get 3.5 good hours, so I go up and went running. It was very dark, no moon, and very few mile markers that I could see - road mile markers, not course markers. I did find the half mark, 13 miles left, and 3 miles left! 14.61 1:46:55 159/176 LH Track. I wondered last night if I would be able to do this 3x3mile @ MP, after bashing my bad (worse) knee into the corner of a bench. It felt as bad as it's ever been, but usually it is from over use (too much basketball or running) or maybe poor form, but this time from coming to a sudden stop against a piece of wood. I decided that maybe today was the day to do an all out 5k (which I can't really do, because subconsciously, I am a wimp). After the first one (with an utterly un-amazing time) I thought I would do another, then after that, I just kept going. All my track miles are run in the second lane. To keep it simple, I say 4 laps is a mile, but really 3.957 laps are a mile, so technically 12.267 laps are 3.1 miles. Today, each 5k consists of 2x4 laps + 4.25 laps + 5 steps (the 5 steps should be enough to take care of the .017 since I take approximately 300 steps around the 400+ meter track => 5/300 = .0166 - so close to .017). 13.1 1:23:55.7 177/189 Top of Utah half Marathon! PR! Play-by-Play I didn't sleep great, even though I told myself ever and over that this was just a training run. I knew I could run it in 1:27:37 (that's what I did 3 weeks ago in non-race conditions) and figured the better weather and the aid stations could only help. the weather was pretty good - a few degrees cooler would have been ideal, but it was good enough that I won't complain. I got out of bed around 4:55, drank 2 glasses of water, ate an egg and some oatmeal (2 scoops). I drank another half glass of water and took morning vitamins. Then I waited for my dad and we left. We found Travis near the end of the bus line (he drove with his sister-in-law and here friend that spent the night at his place.) We chatted on the way up. There were huge lines at the POPS, but I didn't really need anything more than a tree. I made a stop at the clothing bus and jogged a bit to the start line. The race started late (about 10 minutes) but we weren't at all surprised - there were 2397 runners - almost 900 more than last year. 1.0 6:17.4 165 - started about 8 feet back (3-4 seconds) but got boxed in - people 8 feet behind me had flown by by the time I could get around 3-5 people running in the wrong spot...Seems like 5-10 seconds, but everyone starts too fast so I wasn't too disappointed. My dad says after he crossed the start line he was still walking and it took him 'til mile 6 to make up the time. 2.0 6:12.1 178 - by here, most people had fallen into their places/paces. A co-worker who started right next to me (Mark Wallace) - who also got boxed in passed me here. There were 4 men running 10 yards ahead of me. I thought I would have been better off running with them, but decided not to push to catch up with them - my Heart Rate was right where I wanted it to be. 3.0 6:21.9 178 - the group of 4 had spread out, I ended up behind the last - Cameron Madsen (son of a different co-worker). At the aid station, I dumped a cup of water over my head and drank some crappy, strong, red Gatorade. At each aid station (6,9,11) I did the same thing, except the Gatorade was better at the other stations. 4.0 6:26.9 177 - I stayed close to Cameron (who finished his 1st Half ever in 1:26:07 - gun time) 5.0 6:16.0 177 - Nephi Sanchez came cruising by. I chatted with him a bit, then he took off. He has a torn meniscus that starts bothering him around 8-9 miles. He made it through the Ragnar relay without any troubles and hoped to do the same today. Then he took off. By now, I was close enough to Cameron to engage in some conversation. I didn't know him until we talked, he just looked like my co-worker Dave. Cameron just got home from his mission in the first week or two of July. He had made his companions run 4 miles with him, so he was in decent shape when he got home. He was hoping to finish around 1:30, but was feeling really good, so he started out fast. He ran tangents fairly well, but like most people he seemed a bit leery of getting too close to the edge. He seemed to have pretty decent form, but did have a fairly loud foot slap on the downhill sections. 6.0 6:17.1 178 - had some wind from varying directions as well as some up and downhill sections. I took the lead from Cameron, thinking that I had tailed him long enough and it would only be fair if he could draft a little in the windy section. By the time we hit the aid station though, their was a sizable gap. 7.0 6:08.2 178 - nice, gentle downhill with a good tailwind - I don't think that the people finishing around 2 hours had this advantage :( 8.0 6:25.1 178 - in the straightaways, 2 of the remaining 3 from the group of 4 men come into view, as well as another guy. I just focused on the tangents and keeping my HR in check. One goal that I had (that I knew I wouldn't meet but wanted to try any was) was to finish the last 5k faster than my 5k race time - difficult, since miles 11 and 12 are uphill - so I tried not to push too hard to catch anyone. Eventually passed 2 and then I caught up with Mark Wallace. I asked how he was doing - he said 'getting tired'. As we talked, my HR spiked to 186 (strange - I've never noticed that while chatting) so I didn't talk much, but I don't think that he wanted to either. As I pulled away, he said, "Go for it!" 9.0 6:29.4 177 - fairly uneventful, but clearly I'm either running out of gas, or the terrain is changing to flat - or maybe both. 10.0 6:30.2 177 - out on the main highway 11.0 6:38.0 178 - as we turned my Maverick, I could finally tell who I was catching up to - Nephi. Before I could catch him, a younger (probably in his twenties, not thirties) guy passed by running great. It must have been Colton Bramwell - I talked with him after, but must have missed his name. It was his first race in a while and he wanted to know what some other good races were, so I told him about the fastrunningblog. I passed Nephi at the aid station. 12.0 7:04.8 177 - right before the mile marker, I passed 3 guys. They were all running side by side, talking. As I passed them, I said, "I'll pass you now so that all of you can pass someone in the last mile!" None of them did. Though either one of them tapered off pretty bad, or wasn't registered because there weren't 3 together at the end (Nephi wasn't one of them.) 13.0 6:20.0 178 - Colton ended up passing someone else, so the next person in front of me was Stephen Robinson - who finished 56 seconds ahead, so I didn't have the pleasure of passing anyone in the last mile. 13.1 0:29.9 184 (4:59 pace) - I had quite the cheering section: brothers BJ (who was in town from Maryland for a couple days), Darrin (who brought his girl friend Kaitlyn), sister Jen, Mom, and of course my wife Jeri Dawn and 4 daughters! So of course I picked it up at the end - though not as much as my brother Travis - who ran the final 0.1 miles in 28 seconds. He really is faster than I am, but my training is much better. His final gun time was 1:27:36 - 6 seconds slower than last year, but he said his watch put him 3 seconds faster than last year. I got some nourishment, put on a shirt, took off my bib (since everyone hates the show-offs who finish then run back), and went looking for my dad. I found him around 11.75. He was tired, walked a bit (but his walk is quite fast - it felt awkward to me, I couldn't decide whether or not to jog just to keep up with him. Then he'd start running and pass everyone who passed him while he was walking. He really wanted to beat last years time of 2:00:15. He wanted to know who was here for support - he spent the night at my place, but everyone else drove up from Plain City this morning. When he heard the list, he knew he had to finish strong. He asked me how far to the finish. I said, "Can you see the black and white arch?" "No, I only see a lot of people." "You can't see the arch above them?" "No." "Well, it's probably 0.3-0.4 miles, how much time do you have?" "3 minutes." "You can make it, but your going to have to push it." We started running. As we got closer to the finish and I prepared to leave him, I told him to push hard. Later he said that when he looked over and realized I was gone, he almost stopped to walk, but heard someone cheering. My dad (registered as Crystal McKellar, who injured her knee...) ran 9 seconds faster than last year! So everyone PR'd by their own watches, but according to gun time, they didn't. (I ran another 2.5 miles in this segment.) As I was running/walking with my dad, Kelli passed by going the opposite direction - I wouldn't have known it was her except for the comment she made on her blog regarding plaid skirt. Eventually she passed going the right way running someone in. I asked if she beat here 1:35 - she did, by a long shot, but you'll have to read her report to find out the results. I also met/talked to Scott Ensign - who did a phenomenal job! Obviously, there were other bloggers there, but I don't really know who, besides Paul Peterson - who also was amazing, though the only place I saw him was the start line - he's way too fast to see anywhere else. After the drawing, I ran home to finish my long run for the week. I followed the TOU Marathon course to 24.125 miles, then cut across to the finish and continued home on canyon road, for another 4.8 miles. It was quite warm. My average HR was around 160 and it took 40 minutes (8:20 pace).

The break wasn't as long as I had hoped and a truck passed me from behind. Apparently the driver caught a glimpse of the action - as I passed him later (stopped in 1st day of school at USU traffic) he rolled down his window and said I had made his day! After making sure he didn't catch anything on video, I finished my leisurely run. *A note from Saturday's race: I remembered from my practice Half a few weeks ago that about 3:40-4:00 minutes in from the Half mile markers were the full mile markers. It was really nice to be able to gage my time without having to wait to the end of a mile to see how I was doing. I suppose some people might be upset about additional markers, but I think it would be nice if they marked the marathon course in 1/2 mile segments!

Very nice run. I sort of felt like I was running out of energy about the same time the sun come out (though it had nothing to do with the sun) but pushed through and felt good shortly thereafter. I saw Scott Ensign just as I rounded the corner to the TOU finish and passed him as he stopped for a drink at the TOU finish area. Talked to him a bit after - he caught me when I finished running at my home. BQ!!!!!!And a PR by 23 minutes and 26 seconds 26.2 3:00:38.1 174 - I finally did it! It was much easier than all my other attempts - probably something related to training and being well, but who knows? The Whole Story (or most of it) for my reference. I really do read these before races to glean anything from them that my help in the future. That's why I didn't eat anything after breakfast this time, including Gu 15 minutes before the race started (since the last two marathons pre-race nutrition plans left some questions in my mind). I began my final 12 weeks of training with the goal of finishing TOU in 2:57:30. Seems kind of arbitrary, but if I could break 3:00:00, I would definitely qualify for Boston. That meant my marathon pace would be 6:46 and my tempo pace would be 6:10. However, it quickly became apparent when I couldn't hit my tempo targets that speed would be my issue. So I focused on mileage and aerobic capacity (doing basically what Sasha has suggested to all BQ hopefuls), ramping up my mileage (from 40 mile weeks in the spring), most of it at conversational pace (HR of 151 or less). The mileage of my last 12 weeks were 48.9 58.46, 60.7, 59.36 64.4 73.08, 70.1, 78.4, 82.72, 74.68, 55.7 and 29.95 not including the marathon. My MP runs went well and as my mileage climbed, my knees held out for the most part, but speed didn't come. I had five runs ever 20 miles (two were 26.2 in 3:23 and 3:19). TOU half was a good test and according to the race time predictor, my 1:23:57 should be good enough for a 2:59:59. I started eating a little differently, focusing on consuming food right after runs, eating larger breakfast (650 calories instead of 300) and eating healthy snacks whenever I felt hungry. (That's not to say I never had cookies - I did, just not when I was hungry!) But, after all the training you do, the only thing in the last week (besides tapering) that you can do is think about your race plan. I had been tempted to go out with Paul Peterson, David Nelson, Allie Scott and Scott Ensign. They all seemed to be shooting for 2:55 - which seemed like a bit of a push for me, but after a little encouragement I though it might be worth a try. Then Sasha came up Friday night (it was fun to meet him and listen while he imparted of his wisdom - tell him two things about your training and he has worthy advice and an amazing intuition about your ability. My brother's training has suffered this summer due to his work schedule - or lack of schedule, and his knee has some strange injury. Sasha asks him his half time, which was 1:27:31, and says "Go strong through 15 miles then just hang on and finish. You're probably looking at 4 hours." He finished at 3:59:18.1.) I told him about my half time and average mileage. He says BQ should be easy, 3:05 and possibly 3:00. Later, as we discussed Friday's newspaper article about who might win, it comes up that Paul is running, but he isn't mentioned in the article. I said it's probably because he plans on pacing David to a 2:55. Sasha looks at me and says, "You might want to trying hanging on with them." Well, that seals the deal, any questions I had before about the wisdom of going out a little too fast are removed, which leads to a terrible night of sleep (2 hours between 11:00 and 1:00) but I was able to almost finish 'MockingJay' :) At 9:30, I had a serving of frosted mini-wheats. Then, for entertainment, I had my wife write 5 mile splits for a 2:55 on my arm (from Paul's TOU Pace Chart). Then it was time to pretend to sleep. At 1:30, my stomach was calling for food, so I had another serving of frosted mini-wheats then climbed back in bed. At 2:23, I gave up the battle since I hadn't slept a wink and read 'til breakfast time. At 4:15, I made some oatmeal, and fried an egg. I ate, took some daily vitamins, and drank two glasses of water (which seemed like too much by the time the bus got to Hardware Ranch), and weighed in - 134 lbs. We waited around for my brother to pick us up and were in line for the buses at 5:15 or s o. The ride up was good, and though I'm sure Sasha is used to it, there were some people questioning his choice of footwear. I told them to look for him to finish in the top 5. They all let out a breath as they mentioned that they just wanted to finish. Sasha showed us the mythical Land of Oz - but at this point, all I needed was a tree. We got separated from Sasha. Ran into Heidi (who I ran with in Bear Lake - she took first in the Philly Class!), Mark Wallace from work (who beat his goal time by two minutes), my aunt JoAnn and her daughter Kyla who were running this as their last long run before SGM. I met and talked with Tracy Fifield who overheard me talking about some bloggers goal times. He wondered who his competition was and who that was wearing gold Crocs. He ended up taking 1st in Masters. Then it was time to dump the clothes where my brother found his friend Jon Stuart - who missed a BQ by less than 2 minutes in Ogden. Naturally, his goal was to make it under 3:10:59 this time. Unfortunately, he missed it again, this time by 2:55. At the start line, I met found some bloggers and lined up near allie, lily, and Scott. I wore a shirt at the start (which I've never done) and had socks on my hands. But apparently, someone forgot to send me the memo about cutting them open. Everyone else's sock were arm warmers and they wore gloves. I just had close toed sock covering my hands and lower arms. It wasn't too bad though, I ditched them soon enough. The Race Mile LapTime AveHr 1 6:25.1 171 (not really) - After the gun, we started out at a brisk pace that actually felt quite relaxed. I have no idea what my HR was, since my HR strap kept falling down. I hadn't adjusted it at all, and figured that removing my iPod would make it even easier for it to stay in position. I guess the cold shrunk me more than the strap. After fighting with it the first mile, I ditched the socks, tightened the strap - that's when I saw my HR was 171 - a little higher than planned. 2 6:31.3 174 - Still moving at a good pace, but this is right on target, except for my HR. I knew it would be a little bit of a stretch to stay with this 'pace group'. I met Paul and David - who is pacing Jon this week in the Bear 100. There were probably 12 or more runners together at this point. Usually I run alone - even in races. Going down the canyon, missing tangents because of all the people is weird for me, so I moved to the back for the pack. 3 6:26.9 177 - A little fast -10 seconds - and I can tell by my HR that I won't be staying with the group through 18 miles like I had hoped. It took Gu just before the aid station and water to wash it down. Just like last year, I didn't see my uncle Bruce who was volunteering at this aid station. 4 6:28.1 177 - Same story but only 6 seconds fast. 5 6:34.5 177 Split 32:26, target 32:46 - I ditched the shirt here, since I had started sweating. Took some Gatorade. I see allie has opened up a bit of a lead on the group and slowly bridges the gap to Scott and Maika - Go allie! 6 6:31.5 177 - Still just running, knowing I should drop off the group. The past 2 miles, I would drop back a bit, only to see my Hr drop momentarily, then rise back up. So I would catch up and watch it settle to 177. I know that's too high, but I think running alone is worth adding another beat. 7 6:35.2 177 - Gatorade, red - too strong, but I had already dumped the cup of water over my head... I got a slight stomach cramp after mile 9 from this, but it didn't last more than long enough for me to notice it. 8 6:24.9 175 - I decided that I had to drop off the pack. I knew I would pay in the end for going out a little too fast. I know I definitely could have finished stronger if I had started out slower, but even if I had been shooting for 3:00:38.1 with an even effort, I'm not entirely sure I could have pulled off 7:13, 6:57, 7:05, and 7:00 to finish this one off. 9 6:34.9 174 - PowerGel and water and water over my head. Keith Anderson slows for a Pop stop, though he didn't ever stop for it. I chat with him for a second about being Scotts nemesis. He says he enjoys the back-and-forth, but thinks Scott has his number today. Apparently he was wrong. 10 6:38.5 174 Split 1:05:11, target 1:05:56 - a little fast, but my HR is still going down. 11 6:47.1 174 - the tail wind is feeling really nice. Took some endurolites and water and water over my head. 12 6:31.8 173 - tail wind still feels good. I contemplated slowing a bit for a restroom break before people starting showing up all over the course, but didn't feel a real need. I made it through the whole race without a worry! 13 6:39.4 172 - still enjoying the tailwind! 13.1 40.0 171 Split 1:25:49, target 1:26:27 - 12 seconds from my 2nd fastest half ever! 14 5:42.1 174 (6:22.1 for the mile) I saw my mom! 15 6:42.6 173 Spilt 1:38:14, target 1:38:42 - I saw my dad! The turn off to Hollow Road is inspiring. But here, something starts that bothers me psychologically the rest of the race, twice per mile for 30 seconds each time... I passed two guys in here, both at the aid station. Really, I just continued trading placing with one, but somewhere in the next few miles, I finally shook him. Now my times are starting to drop below goal pace. I took another PowerGel and water and water over my head. 16 6:46.2 173 - there goes 8 seconds 17 6:52.8 173 - popping onto main street is nice (with the crowds and all). I don't mind the traffic really, but it seems like less of these spectators care to cheer everyone on than any other segment of the race. It didn't bother me 'cause I knew I'd be seeing my family at the nacho party (Maverick) shortly. I think this was a water/water spot. 18 6:48.3 174 - it was great to see my family and my dad again! I blew kisses to my daughters. 19 7:20.3 175 - got passed by a man that just cruised on by, like he had started the race late or something and had to make up some time. Took some more endurolite pills and water/water, cause I sensed that I needed electrolytes more than carbs. 20 7:29.6 172 Split 2:13:31, target 2:12:38 - there were two people ahead of me that pulled over to the right side of the road at this mile marker (non-tangential) plus a bunch of people, so I thought this is where the aid stations started to be at every mile. I opened another PowerGel and started sucking it down before I realized that it was a timing station, not an aid station, so I savored that flavor for another mile... 21 7:06.9 172 - I thought I was making good time down this gentle hill, but there was quite a bit of traffic (hah - like that's why I started running slower!) But, after the last mile with PowerGel in my mouth, the water tasted delicious! I tried to surge, but felt as though my legs would cramp up if I pushed any harder. 22 7:28.3 173 - I've run the course multiple times recently, each time noticing that there was no new 22 mile mark. After the BYU girl passed me, almost catching Miaka, I thought, as I made my way over to the north side of the road, "They're going the wrong way - why aren't those spectators saying anything?" Then I noticed a red (as close to black as I've ever seen red be) arrow pointing almost straight, the direction they're going. So I turned towards them... Gatorade and water. 23 7:41.6 172 - BYU girl is cruising, gaps Miaka quite a bit and a couple more fresh-faced guys pass me. I tried to mention to each that their pace was great and be encouraging. Some people seemed irritated by encouragement from someone so inferior, and others seemed truly grateful to not be the only ones who thought they were doing well this late in the race. I took more electrolytes, water and water. 24 7:28.0 171 - My family was waiting at the end of this one - if I hadn't been so easily ahead of making the BQ mark, my emotions might of gotten the best of me, but not even close this time! Water and water. 25 7:43.7 171 Split 2:51:00, target 2:46:38 - I think a few more passersby. I realize the 3:00:00 is getting too close. I try to surge a little and feel the same as before - any pushing will result in cramps. I try to maintain pace and not slow down - blasted hill. 26 7:56.7 170 - Woohoo! No 8 minute miles!!! Another female (Annie) - I have no issues being beaten by someone faster than me. This was too slow, but as I tried to go faster I didn't... 26.2 1:41.5 172 - I try to kick, I hear my wife cheering and see her in tears, knowing she knows I'll just miss 3:00:00. I didn't have anything left - I left it all on the course - and I am happy! The finish area was great - there were two women from my ward, who both ran the half, there cheering. I talked with them after and they were thinking, "Why aren't we running? Maybe next year." Post Race After 4 chuggs, I head back to mile 24 with my family. We cheer for many, I see Heidi again, a few others, and eventually Travis (brother) - his pace is suffering, he's cramping up, has walked a lot and stretched a lot, but he'll have to push to beat 4 hrs. I started to run with him, but after 2 block, those chocolate milk chuggs threatened to come back, so I let my dad run him in. About 20 minutes later, they rounded the corner. We cheered loudly, grateful the hour mark hadn't changed yet! I drank another chugg, a glass of water, hit the POP and had massage. We hung out at the park for another hour chatting. When I got home, I weighed myself - 132 lbs. After drinking 3 lbs. of liquid after the race, urinating a bit, drinking everything during the race, I was still down 2 lbs. My parents came over, Travis and his wife too, and I made everyone BBQ chicken quesadillas! My wife made smashed cake. Then I relaxed the rest of the day! Except for the time we put up 25 quarts of peaches...

When I check mapmyrun after getting home, I noticed that my start point was 0.11 miles from the 2 mile marker - strange. Hawaii trip travel and expense log: 30 Thursday - Went jogging then to Walmart for cough drops (didn't use), earphones for JD, Dramamine for JD, and a headlamp. Jerry took us to the Airport. On the flight from Phoenix to Honolulu we watched Ironman 2 and Adam (a guy with aspburgers disease). Rented a Ford Focus from Thrifty with only 5 miles (something they were very excited about.) Drove to the condo to check it out. Walked to the beach (it's 3-4 blocks unless you walk through the 'International Market Place' - then it's barely 2!) and ate at Wolfgang Pucks Express! We had the 4 cheese Pesto Pizza, which had sun dried tomatoes, basil, etc., a dallop of goat cheese on a slice of tomato on each slice! Then we went to Walmart to stock up (eggs, milk, buttermilk, and sour cream for the buttermilk pancakes, 2 loaves of bread, Hershey's Syrup - Dark Chocolate, yogurt, cottage cheese, 1 can of Pringles, 2 things of cran-something juice, cheese, turkey, and Miracle Whip. $11 - Wolfgang Pucks $63 - Walmart 1 Friday - We went back to Walmart to get some mosquito repellant. Ended up also getting me a swimming suit, paper towels, and turtle stickers. Then we drove to Lyon Arboletum to hike Manoa Falls - a 1.6 mile roundtrip hike through the jungle ending at a waterfall! We almost drove up the east coast instead to count the waterfalls after a rainstorm, since it was raining, but we decided that the rain wasn't that big of a deal - it was great! Next, we went to Snorkel Bob's to rent equipment, then walked to the beach, and walked, and walked to right below Diamond Head, where I snorkeled for a bit and JD laughed and watched. Then we walked back in a rainstorm (another stormed had already drenched Waikiki), showered and went back out. at the Farmers' Market and got some rambutan (fruit of heaver?), bananas, and fresh pineapple. We ate a Turkey Melt with fries (that had marjoram) at Wolfgangs. $30 - Walmart $90 - Snorkel Bobs $17 - Farmers' Market $11 - Wolfgang Puck 2 Saturday - Drive to Laie to pick up Mary to go to the Aloha Stadium Swap Meet, which was closing for some strange reason - they were rushing people out of there almost like there was a bomb threat. So we went to hike Diamond Head. Near it was another outdoor market that was also closing, but we walked through it - mostly food. Diamond Head was interesting - you're supposed allow 1.5 to 2 hours for the activity. We spent plenty of time at the top and had quite a bit of fun coming down, but it took 1 hour and 0 minutes... Then we came back to the condo, where Mary seemed to suddenly get a little ill, to drop off the car and then went to the Cheesecake Factory. I had a Green Chili Burger, JD had the Artichoke Soup and Salad, and we shared a slice of Caramel Reese's Cheesecake. Then we went bodyboarding (Mary stayed to take a shower, then went to meet some kids from college), showered, went back to the beach for a hula! Then we walked the beach in the dark collecting tubes and a flipper! $5 - Diamond Head $60 - CheeseCake Factory (including Mary's) 3 Sunday - Woke up 7 minutes before sunrise, which was about 10 minutes late, but we hurried out the door anyway. Saw the sun just after it rose! Then we had buttermilk pancakes (3rd day in a row) with Coconut Syrup! We drove to the North Shore, Halewia (where Matsumodo's is), went to Wiamea Bay, Sharks Cove to snorkel, and Turtle Bay where we saw a seal on the beach and a turtle in the water. Hung out at the temple answering 30 questions about each other to see who knows who...until the rain set in - then we ran for cover and finished the 30 questions. Went to get our keys back from Mary and took her to the store to get some medicine. $14 - Medicine 4 Monday - Haunama Bay! Windy, choppy, cloudy, but fun - though JD got 'seasick' but the tide was high, so we were able to go right over most of the coral easily and see a lot of fish, many different types. Unfortunately, the 'toilet bowl' was closed, probably because the tide was high at the time. Then we drove for an hour to the west point of the island to Kaena Point, where we hiked past two inactive blowholes (since the tide had dropped) and made it out to where the monk seals are supposed to be. While we were the treasure hunting, 2 seals came by! There was a ton of choral washed up at the point along with puka(?) shells - mostly broken, but JD found one good big one, and we found 4 little ones! It was just the type of outing you would want anywhere - time alone, together, on a treasure hunt to please our kids and some wildlife! $16 - Haunama Bay 5 Tuesday - Walmart (milk, cereal, cookies, M&Ms, ear plugs and ear drying drops, and cran-blackcherry juice) , then North Shore, Waiamea bay, Turtle Beach where there were a bunch of turtles, Ted's Bakery for lunch (haupia pie? and pineapple cheese cake, a plate lunch and a hamburger), PCC (Mission Home - Haugens, Samoa, Tonga, Aerotora - New Zealand, Buffet and Ha - Breath of Life). $32 - Walmart $33 - Gas $20 - Ted's Bakery $54 - Polynesian Culture Center 6 Wednesday - Dee Lite Bakery for breakfast, then to the swap meet where we bought a swim suit for JD, a hat for me, 8 t-shirts, 7 necklaces, and stickers. Sandwiches and cereal for lunch. Then we hiked to Makapu'u Light house, then stopped at Halona Blow Hole. We went to the beach to body board, but there weren't many good waves so we swam across Waikiki. Then we hit Wolfgang Pucks for 4 Cheese Ravioli and Coldstone for some ice cream. $9 - Dee Lite Bakery $67 - Swap Meet $13 - Wolfgang Pucks $7 - Coldstone 7 Thursday - We drove to Turtle Beach, where there were plenty of turtles in to play! I snorkeled with them - they were quite interesting and huge. Sometimes I would adjust my snorkel or mask then drop back into the water to find one right behind me - sometimes touching my leg with their fins! So I would try swimming away but they would stay right on my tail. Then I would try changing directions (to get out of their way since it is illegal to approach them, touch them, or aggravate them) and then look back to the left, then right and think that I had lost them, only to look right below me as they swam right under me and their back would rub my stomach. Some were small, about the size of an SUV wheel and tire, others seemed as large as a dining table for 6! It was amazing. Then one swam up onto the beach! We went to Sunset Beach where we found a coconut waiting to be cracked open - unfortunately it was rotten inside. Then on to Ted's Bakery to get a Custard Danish for dessert for lunch that we were going to Kua 'Ainu for - a pineapple burger and fries. We had decided that splitting a single meal and dessert is better than each getting our own meal, eating too much, and not having dessert. Each time we've gone to Wolfgangs, we've shared and that has been great! Then we came back to the condo and crashed (JD slept for about 2.5 hours, I slept for about 1)... $3 - Ted's Bakery $11 - Kua 'Ainu 8 Friday - We drove around looking for a good place to use our fins one last time bodyboarding before we had to take them back. No waves :( One last trip to Walmart - we forgot eggs (for buttermilk pancakes) - we also got a few last things for the plain ride (bread for sandwiches, some guava jam, and somd snacks. We then went to the Cheesecake Factory where we shared 4 Cheese Pasta and a piece of Craig's Crazy Carrot Cake Cheesecake. We walked down the beach, people watching, where we caught a bus to Halo Hatties (it's supposed to be the official Hawaii store, but was pretty lame - even though they were having a tent sale). On the way back, we stopped at the Army Museum - actually pretty cool, even though I am not a history aficionado. We walked the rest of the way back along the beach. We saw a few more sea turtles! We hadn't ever seen turtles at Waikiki, but there were at least 3, maybe even 5! Went to check for some wave action - still none... Hit the Farmer's Market for some more rambutan, then headed back to the condo for some pineapple and cottage cheese. Then we went back out to see the sunset and some crazy people! $20 - Walmart $25 - Cheesecake Factory $4 - Farmer's Market 9 Saturday - We went back to Kaena Point to do some more treasure hunting! It's a bit of a drive, but we enjoyed the time. We found a few more shells, saw 2 more monk seals and really had a good time talking about everything (mostly each other and our relationship). We also went to Waikiki Beach to try some more body boarding. Again, the waves were a little small, but we had fun anyway. We hit Wolfgang Puck for a Margarita Pizza and The Cheesecake Factory for a piece of Carmel Pecan Turtle Cheesecake. Like every other day, it was wonderful! $11 - Wofgang Puck $8 - Cheesecake Factory 10 Sunday - Church then chillin' at Turtle Beach where 3 turtles were taking a nap on the beach! 5.0 40:36.1 147 Easy up the Canyon (2+2+1). I didn't run yesterday because Tuesday during my run, about halfway through, I had a sudden onset of runner's knee (or something of the sort). My right knee, on the inside, lower edge of my patella was sore and stiff all day. When my alarm sounded Wednesday, I checked it and decided that it wouldn't be a good idea to run. I stopped taking glucosamine (which I started taking the second or third week of August when my knee started to feel a bit of pain as I ramped up my miles) the day after the marathon - 'cause I ran out. I bought some cheap stuff at Walmart Tuesday. I also realized that I have dropped my water intake significantly and wonder what made the most difference - the lack of glucosamine, or the lack of water. I've had some good weeks since the marathon, and I guess I can remember a bit of pain in the past couple weeks (water or glucosamine?), but it sure came on strong Tuesday. Maybe I'll nurse it back, then alternate between a reduction of my water consumption and reduction of glucosamine in monthly cycles to see what make the most difference... So, short story. We inadvertently followed a patten with the naming of our children. The first daughters name was chosen before we were even married (I had a first name for a girl that was the middle name of my MTC companion. My wife had the middle name that was the first name of her best friend). The second was a name that my wife heard while teaching... The third I pieced together from a word I really like. When it came time to name the 4th, our first had recognized a pattern. Every name had 6 letters, 'i' as the second letter, and a double letter.
