1 mile at the house at around 6:50 a.m to help the tummy get going if you know what I mean.

2.6 mile warm up at the start. This could have been a bad choice. I ran up the hill after the bus dropped up of for a little over a mile. I needed a good warm-up but not a steep uphill.

At the start I could see fast people everywhere and decided that Dave and I had our work cut out for the race. We jumped on with Nick M, and a UVSC runner (last name Moody). Here's how the race boiled down:

1. 4:40- A fast first mile but I knew it would be on that steep downhill sections. All 4 of us are together and Hip Hip Jose is out in the lead pulling his usual stunt.

2. 5:10- The course rolls through some washes and stuff so it's up and down through here. Moody and Nick are up on Dave and I but we're not too far back.

3. 5:01- I try and really work on this mile. Nick drops the Moody guy and it looks as if I can go get him... so I surge hard in a few places. 3 miles in 14:51!

4. 5:23- I wanted this mile to be better but as we turned uphill into the houses I started to drift and really struggled to get to the top where it turns and heads back down to the main road. Dave is close as we are going up, but on the downhill back out I try to put a few seconds on.

5. 5:35- I'm still back in no mans land and totally up for grabs if Dave wants to take me out. One this mile Nick and Moody miss a turn and head straight in to the finish. At the point that I turned I'd say I was 1 min back from Nick and around 25 seconds back from Moody. So Dave and I turn back uphill and weave our way through the desert.

6. 5:36- I'm still just hanging around. Now my mind is racing thinking about how those guys missed the turn and what would become of it all. I decide to give it just a little more to lose Dave for good and I think he is gone... Well as I turn the corner at the round-a-bout out of the corner of my eye I see him ROLLING like 3 seconds away. So I quickly shift gears.

.2 miles in 56 seconds- I surge hard for about 400 m to discourage Dave from coming up. Then once I realized he was o.k with it I was o.k with it and I just coasted on in.

2.5 Ran back to find Mik'L and she was doing great and most likely could have done better without me giving her the splits and stuff. She did a good job smashing the hour mark with a 56:30 I think.

The race was pretty good. I didn't care about what the time was because I didn't know what to expect from this course. All I wanted was to go run to my potential considering the training and such... and for the most part I think I did. The steep warm-up mile might have slowed me down just a little through the 4th or 5th mile. But when it was over I was happy with a 5:14 min mile avg on that course. It is still hard to judge where Dave and I are right now (we're both so close in our shape). The only thing I keep telling myself is that we should be good with the 5 or 6 weeks straight at 100 miles or more. I know this is kind of uncharted territory for us but should yield some great results later this spring and summer.

5 mile run this afternoon. After the race I spent the rest of the day here in front of the computer and on the couch watching some college hoops with some naps. When I finally started to move around I was starting to get tight. So I decided to do a little shake out and loosen up while pushing the week over 100- I was at 98- just to close to just leave it. I have OCD!

Wow what a great race for you! You did so great. You will have some great summer races. It was good to finally meet you in person.

From Jon on Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 14:31:39

Good job!

Just wondering, a few of you mentioned hip hip Jose- is he someone who just goes out fast and dies?

With Nick and Moody taking a wrong turn, did you technically win the race?

From Superfly on Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 14:37:48

Jose is a local guy who runs pretty good (2:36 in STG in 2006). But yes he goes out way too fast. We all ran a 4:40 first mile and I'd guess he hit a 4:28-30ish.

I kind of technically did win but told the race director that it was o.k and that most likely they would have won anyways- Plus it wasn't their fault- the volunteer wasn't there telling them to turn. I knew because we ran it on Thursday with the running club. So Nick still got the 1st place booty. He was smoking today. I may have caught the Moody guy or maybe not. We'll never know.

From Cody on Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 14:38:28

That was fast! Good work. You should be sitting pretty with your mileage. Trust it and you will do great this spring.

From Mike Warren on Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 15:07:52

Clyde, glad you had a good race. It's also good to see some awesome sportmanship! I know you had a bad experience with a turn around. Your a great runner, but a better person!

From James on Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 15:23:27

Good job on the race. It is good to see my buddies dominating on both sides of the state. This is going to be a good year for you.

It was probably Danny Moody. He is about 24 or 25 but looks like he is in his late 30s? He works at Runners Corner and ran at UVSC with me before his mission.

From Ally Holt on Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 15:27:10

I think that drink sounds disgusting! you did really great today. Maybe one day I will be as fast as Mik'l!

From Chad on Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 16:10:24

Great race, Clyde. It's clear that you won't accept a win other than the hard way. . . earning it. You're primed for great things ahead. Keep up the miles.

From James on Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 16:24:59

Clyde was it the same course as last year? If so you ran well over a minute faster!

From dave holt on Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 17:36:03

Good work buddy. I am glad you feel a little better about stuff than I do! Maybe it will come around (the racing that I think I should be able to be doing right now) soon.

From Paul Petersen on Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 17:44:53

Nice job! Sounds like a fun race.

From Walter on Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 18:20:49

What was the winning time down there and who was it? Holy crap your times are phenominal!

From superfly on Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 18:48:29

Walter- The winner Nick M who was on our Del Sol team and the 2nd place guy a UVSC runner by the last name of Moody didn't get official finishing times. They missed a turn that cut off about .6 and came in at like 27 mins or something.

I'd say Nick would have been about a one min and 20 seconds ahead of me and the UVSC guy would have been around 20 seconds ahead unless one of them would have struggled and I would have maybe reeled in Moody, but Nick was flying.

From Christi on Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 19:14:36

Great job today! I can't believe how you pull out those sub 5 min. miles and av. 5:15 after Del Sol and the crazy month you've had. YOU'RE AMAZING!

From Jeff on Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 20:47:29

You are amazing. Great race today!

From Dustin on Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 21:11:27

Hip Hip Jose I love it. I knew he would start out hard, but I was still surprised today how fast he went out. I thought I would maybe have a chance to reel him in, but he actually looked alright from mile 4 on in.

Great job on your race, sounds like you and Dave really pushed each other. Impressive time, especially with the amount of miles you've been putting in.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to run Ogden. I would like to have a good spring marathon, just to see where I'm at.

From Adam RW on Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 21:23:02

Great day overall. As you mention your training is sure going to pay off this summer if not sooner...

From Superfly on Sun, Mar 16, 2008 at 13:05:42

Thanks for all the great support. FYI my butt muscles are very sore this morning and the legs are a little tight. I'm glad the race was yesterday because it is raining today and that wouldn't have been any fun.

Keep on Rockin' in the Free World!

I'm proud of your work ethic but, even more proud of your integrity. You could have insisted on getting the first place awards, but you quietly let the race directors give out the first and second place awards to the other guys. Good call.

I will talk with my friends at the Rec Dept. to see if they can work out the bugs with their races. They are still on a learning curve. What do you suggest they do to improve? Do they need volunteers at the turns, or should they put up cones or better signs to direct the runners throughout the course? They need suggestions from the runners to help them. They have new people on staff. The runners need to help the staffers at the City of St. George to prepare their races. They have figured out the marathon, now help them with their smaller races.

Good luck! I am your greatest cheerleaders, because old high school cheerleaders never die...they just keep dusting off their pom poms and bringing them out for their children!

Keep making us proud!

You don't need to talk to them. I already did yesterday.

Great race, Clyde! And way to show your character at the finish...a mark of a good man!
