Little workout/ shoe run off...

Decided to do 3 loops around the park and school loop. Each one is 2.4 miles long. On each loop I'd wear a different pair of (marathon hopeful) shoes. I'd also do 1 mile of the loop (from the park to River Road at MP tempo). On the first lap I did a couple laps on the grass at the park to help get warmed up.

Loop 1: Asic Speedstars- Tempo mile in 5:29. Shoes felt good for being old. I wore this same pair for the first time in the STG marathon in 2008 and have bounced them around ever since. Tempo mile felt very controlled. A little fast but there is a 1% declineish down to River Road.

Loop 2: Nike Lunaracer- Tempo mile in 5:26. These shoes also felt pretty good. Good enough for a full marathon? IDK. If so I need to wash them off because they are dirty and gross. Tempo mile was a fairly comfy effort. Basically the same as the first one.

Loop 3: Saucony Kinvara- Tempo mile in 5:16. Shoes felt pretty good and better than their first run a couple days ago. Left foot is a little tight and I still don't love how think the forefoot is. I think after these shoes have 200 miles on them I'll love them to death. Tempo was a little fast. I was finally warmed up and running with good form. Plus on the first 2 I pulled up out of tempo gear at around .92 and on this leg I held it til the watch beeped.

Happy about the leg turnover and how the body felt on the workout this morning. Not happy about the shoe results. I still didn't come out with a clear winner. Lame I know but there just isn't any great marathon shoes out on the market right now.... for my running style.

Have you ever tried the Fastwitch? Its got enough cushion to keep your feet from getting beat up, but still is really light - not squishy like the Kinvara though - its a lot more responsive and I feel like the energy return is a lot better.

Jake- Yes. I tried some on the other day and like them a lot. Only problem was that I wear a 9.5 and Steve only had a 9 in stock. I was just a little too tight. But seemed like it could be a good one.

I wear a 9 most of the time, maybe I should go try out those Fastwitch. I have liked the Kinvara and Speedstar

I like the Kinvara up to a half but after that I feel beat up. I really liked the Tangents (now discontinued) and have a pair of Fastwitch. I agree with Jake that they are light and responsive and better than the Kinvara, but haven't tried them on a long distance run to see if they would support me enough.

I ran my last marathon in the Cortana which are a bit heavier but supportive. However, because they promote such a forefoot strike I started to get a hot spot on the balls of my feet and they shoes are hard to run in with even a little change to a heel strike to alleviate the pain. I do think this contributed to my slowdown at Surf City.

Good luck in your search, as the manufacturer's change the shoe lines, it is hard to find replacement shoes. Do you have any access to Brooks Launch?

Yeah Jeff I'm the same I like a slop from the heel to toe. I have several pair of Brooks Launch and have ran multipul marathons in them (downhill) but for this flat race I wanted something more speedy. At this point maybe I should have just stuck with the Launch...
