I meant to run this distance Saturday, but I was too lazy to do it in the morning and never got a chance in the evening. I still wanted to do it because I have the Rim Country Challenge Half Marathon this Saturday (while everyone else is doing SGM.) I need to make sure I can even run the distance. I felt pretty good even though I was very thirsty. I even got to the point where I talked myself into picking up any bottle of liquid laying on the side of the road for a few swigs. The first one I saw was a beer bottle, so I passed that up. Then I saw a jug of Arizona Green Tea, so I passed that up. Then I saw a Coca-Cola bottle, and I passed that up. On the WOW scale, they were getting better, but I decided to just man up and wait 'til I got home. Now the plan is to taper down to 3 miles a day until Friday. Then I'll run a couple of miles in Payson to try and acclimate to the higher elevation. Then Saturday's the race. Hopefully I just miss the first session only of General Conference. |

Rim Country Challenge Half Marathon (13.1 Miles) 02:21:27 | |
This was quite the challenging course. I started off pretty good. I was in 30th place after the first mile. There were rolling hills for the first four or five miles. I thought it was fun at first. The hills started to become a little more pronounced. Still I felt good. Then mile 7 came along and with it, the "hill". I started trotting up it at a nice gait, but at about the halfway point I found that I could walk up faster than I was running. It also helped to stretch my legs out. But the damage had been done. From then on, every little hill felt like a mountain. Luckily, the last half of the race was mostly downhill. The only thing that kept me going was seeing Camille's orange Ragnar shirt not too far behind me. Soon my only objective became to beat Camille. (Sad, but true.) I think she let me win so that my coworkers wouldn't scorn me to shame.
Well, I think I'm done with half marathons for a while. I'd like to try some 10k's and some 5k's. My next race is a triathlon. End of report. |
