AM - Merry Christmas- I went out for a run along the Bayfront and past Coffee Pot Bayou- up 1st street NE and then cut over the 4th on the way back.  When I passed the old Sunken Gardens - I got nostalgic and detoured over the Crescent Lake Park which was the site of my High School Cross Country district champ meets way back in the day.  Not exactly cross country- as it was about 85% sidewalk - looks exactly the same now as it did then,  Rob Murphy.   I took a loop around the lake and recalled one of the few races that I bested Mr. Murphy - a tri meet with like Dixie Hollins and maybe St Pete High.  The only reason I remember the race is because our coach had decided to do an audio recording play by play of the race (not sure why) and Rob had been battling a guy for second place who may have started to pull away and at the same time I was kicking from a ways back and caught Rob in the last few meters.  The coach's commentary was overly complimentary to me and much less charitable to Rob's performance - which we all thought was a bit unfair at the time and at the same time pretty funny the way he called the race.

That's a great memory. Merry Christmas!

I seriously don't remember that. I do remember winning my first ever race on that course in a tri-meet vs. Gibbs and Northeast (my junior year) and Bill Griffin telling me it was no big deal because Gibbs was just "5 black dudes in basketball shoes".

Oh yeah, Merry Christmas to you too Bret. Wish I could have joined you for that run.

Merry Christmas guys. Bill Griffin is a name I have not heard in like 25 years. That's the guy who stuck you in front of an oscillating fan when you were suffering from heat stroke as I recall!

Enjoy your time in Cali.

He would also chew tobacco on runs as well as keep his damn jangling keys in his pocket the whole time.
