3:20 marathon - Eugene Marathon, April 28, 2013 (can I say I really want a sub 3:20? but I will be happy with 3:20-3:23) -- whoohoo!

Some good intermediate races 15K - 1/2 marathon, to gauge my fitness level (done this, hit a 1:34:35 1/2 marathon in March 2013, on a hilly course)

Going after my 10 mile PR in Fall 2013

Maybe some good 10K races after the infernal Arizona summer is over! 




Long-Term Running Goals:

I want to be one of those runners who is still running in their 80s (or 90s?).  You know the ones, who look all grisley and fit?  That is what I would like!  Until then, I just want to work hard and be as fast as I can, for as long as I can.


Personal:

50 year old, trying to defy gravity and time

Used to be faculty at the University of Arizona (biostatistics).  Currently manager of the statistics and data management group for companion diagnostics (biomarkers) at Ventana Medical Systems, Inc. (Roche diagnostics).  We evaluate protein biomarkers that can be used to direct drug therapy that would be most effective based on individual characteristics (personalized medicine).

Tiny bit longer than 7 miles (1:04:06).  Ran up from my office to Wasatch Drive and turned around at 1700 S (32`).

I am a little worried, I have been battling (and losing) PF for almost a year now ... my foot always hurts when I get up, always hurts for the first 5 mins of every run, and always hurts when I get up after sitting in my chair at work.  Well, yesterday it was so painful all day that I almost bagged my PM run.  I was limping - and it hurts so badly that it hurts even when I am not stepping on it.  I was planning on waiting until I got to Tucson to see a doctor about it ... but I might have to try to get in this week.  Please oh please just let it be that I need to stretch more (even though I stretch 30 mins every morning as it is).  Ok, that it is it for the complaining .. back to work.

Pardon me for saying this, but many times these chronic pains are not PF or tendonitis or whatever, but a stress related condition called Tension Myositis Syndrome (or TMS). (http://www.tms-mindbodymedicine.com/tmsinfo.htm) With all the changes going on in your life right now you are a prime candidate for TMS. TMS will *always* imitate believable injury patterns. I know this is a real phenomenon because I have battled it myself several times (and won). If there is anything illogical about your chronic pain, I would recommend that you look into it. PM me if you are interested in any book titles.

Hi Snoqualmie, thanks for the links. It is an interesting theory - I am a little disappointed that there aren't many scientific papers that discuss the approach - or at least I did not see any. I would actually love for this to be the case, however, I am really not sure I am convinced. Though things are stressful right now, I have to say that it is not really that much more stressful than any other time - my job is pretty stressful in general. Moving is not fun, but being a "Navy brat" I am actually pretty used to moving around. Plus, it has been a steady progression of it getting worse and worse for a year now -- I am not sure TMS would work that way? Anyway, I will certainly look into it, I am ever hopeful that it is not something that is going to sideline me. At this point I am just going to try to "bear with it" until we get to Tucson!
