| Location: Salt Lake City,UT, Member Since: Dec 29, 2009 Gender: Male Goal Type: Marathon Finish Running Accomplishments: A marathon runner just trying to enjoy good health and running long. 22 years between marathon 6 & 7, raising kids. 48 marathons and counting. Average finishing time ~ 3:25. Want to keep this average above 3:30 as I continue to age deepin into my 50's. Looking for a 3:12 in SLC 2012 Short-Term Running Goals: Keep my SL Marathon time in "teens". Possibly break the teens (3:12 - 3:00). Two screws in right knee gives me a reality check on my ambitions. I don't want to sacrafice my joint for too crazy of a goal. Good health is my real goal. Long-Term Running Goals: Continue running strong into my 60's, and add to my marathon count. In 1982 I finished St. George at 2:57, 1 second behind a 60 year old. I've always wondered if I could break 3 hours when I'm in my 60's. I'd like to find out. Personal: Married 26 years. Rosalie and I have 4 children. Love running hills, especially up Millcreek Canyon. I live 3/4 mile from its base.

| An afternoon tempo run up to the Eastwood tanks: 2.1 miles ~ 17.5 minutes. Back home in 32:00. Turned off the watch and went over to Palisades. It was 50-degrees and I was warm in my shorts and a long sleeve shirt and gloves. No hat thankfully. I could have had on a short sleeve shirt. Gloves were nice. |

| Ran a couple miles before catching the plane, checking out which shoes to run in. I elected the DS Trainer over the Nike Lunaracer, for comfort reasons. My feet were fine. | Add Comment |

Temps were a little cool to start, and I decided to run in a short sleeve shirt rather than my tank top. This was a decision that I kind of regretted after only a couple miles, but the shirt worked well. It carried it along for a few miles at the end when temps started to climb. My goal was to be under 3:40. In three previous runs, I've never gotten below 3:37. I thought if things went well, I could hit the BQ time of 3:35. And by mile 23, I knew it would be close, realizing my under 3:40 was certainly likely, but not absolutely certain about the 3:35. But, I laid it down and pushed hard, hitting 7:15 MPM the last three. Because of the fast finish, I really feel good about the run, and finished 17 seconds ahead of another 50 year old man, whom I don't know whether I passed or simply was just inside the chip time. The line to the johns was long at the start, so some probably just started late by the clock. A woman passed me in the first 2 miles, and I never saw her again. But I ended up finishing 3 minutes ahead of her time. So, the half marathon group of runners confuses the field of marathoners, but I like it that way. With them, you don't know if your passing half marathoners or marathoners, so it takes out some of that competitive foolishness. |
