Definitely a recovery run from Saturdays run. Legs were beat the first couple of miles, then they figured things out and ended with some solid miles. Now icing the Achilles, hoping to flush some inflammation out.

Achilles test run. Bought some new shoes with some heal lifts that I put in them. Seem to be helping the Achilles quite a bit. Todays pain was roughly 3/10, which is the lowest it has been in months. Just need to focus on slow progression so I can be ready to race in 4 months.

Overall I think a good run for me. No pain in the Achilles today but definitely some inflammation. The Volteran Gel is doing a good job of keeping inflammation down. I just need to keep on the rehab and recovery to help speed healing. Not in very good shape right now hopefully in the next couple of weeks I can start doing hard efforts without limitations do to the Achilles. As of now I know my place, back pack of the crew!!

Easy on the TM. Bitter cold outside with the wind, did that garbage yesterday and didnt want to do that again today. Overall I am feeling very optimistic about hitting a solid race by the middle of May.

I do have a little bit of pain in the achilles everynow and then but not all the time. What I have been told and have read up on is that the achilles being soft tissue can take up to a year to 2 years to get back 100% of its strength. I will continue to monitor the achilles and due stretches as much as can a just move forward.

We did a 4 mile warm up into North Ogden and threw in a tempo on the way back. Jason did 4 miles, I did 5 miles, was planning on 6 but legs were a little heavy still from Sunday. Jon did 6 miles.

My splits were all over the place. First couple of miles I thought about bagging the Tempo completely but decided to stick with it mile by mile and go as far as I could. A little after 4 miles the heavyness was coming fast so I pushed to 5 and cooled back to the car.

Splits were- 5:50;5:57;5:28;5:19;5:30 for a 5:37 avg/pace

Overall I am happy with this but not thrilled. I guess the one thing I need to remember is that I have been back to normal mileage for 4 weeks and need to be patient. The legs will come back and gains will come with it.

Last set effort was there but there was a nasty headwind as the storm rolled in. Definitely slowed quit a bit, but confident I wouldve been in the high to low 30s.

2.30 mile cool back to the pond.

Best overall effort and the best that I have felt since coming back from injury. Feeling like a runner again, and have high hopes for the up and coming Ogden Half Marathon.

But thanks to Dave for pushing me and keeping me honest I was able to get all 16 reps in with a brutal headwind that most likely cost us about 2 seconds per 400.

Snuck out early to get in a run. Usually not a big fan of running on Sunday but when I do run I try to reflect on how to be a better husband and father, and things I can do better in my life. Sort of sets the light for my Sunday meetings. With that said....

Workout today wasnt going to be fancy, goal today was to hit 15 miles maybe throw in 5 miles around 6 min pace. So I took the warm up nice and easy and got in 4.6 miles. Started my tempo and when things got going I felt relaxed and just went mile by mile. After 5 miles around 5:50 pace I told myself I will go to 8 miles, once 8 miles came I just did 10 miles. Avg pace for tempo was 5:48 min/miles.

Overall I take this to the bank and call it a good deposit. Didnt feel like I was overworking and felt like there will be no setbacks. Good mental and fitness booster

Interesting perspective on the last 3 weeks of running. I base my mileage off of Strava.

The last 3 weeks I have hit the exact mileag of 80.7 miles a week. One thing I noticed was a the down trend on running time. 3 weeks ago I ran 80.7 miles in 10 h 13 m, 2 weeks ago, 9 h 49 min and this week 9 h 22 min.

Almost 1 hour off total run time. I feel my fitness level is coming back fine and my body is handling the mileage great. Hopefully this down trend in minutes and miles will continue.

Not much to say about this race.Very tough hilly course, not about time at all.

Going into the race I have had some high mileage weeks and I didnt back the mileage off at all. Tough workout on Wednesday followed by 2 hours of basketball that night, legs were just beat the rest of the week.

Anyway started out conservative with Jon and once the climbs officially started he put the hurt on me bad. I kid you not, this kid is a mountain goat and would bet money on him anyday of the week! He just doesnt slow! After the first climb he put a gap of about 15 seconds on me. I would slowly work my way back to him, then another climb would come and he would do the same thing, just pull away. I caught him around mile 5 and we hit the last major climb and he again gapped me. Mentally I was going to give in and just screw it. Legs werent feeling to hot, and just didnt know how much more I wanted to hurt. Around mile 6.5 there is some screaming down, so I gave it one more go to attack Jon. I finally caught him and kept pushing that mile. I ended up with something around 5:20 for that split. Looked back and made a good gap on him. But that gap never got bigger he was there pushing the pace to the finish.

Gratefeul for Jons determination to keep fighting, it allowed me to run hard on heavy legs and push mentally through some of my weaknesses(hill running). We both finished better than last year. I was about 90 seconds faster, and Jon was about a minute.

Positive outcome- Got in a good push at 13 miles on heavy legs and can take the deposit for the week. Finished better than last years time definitely boost my confidence going into the Ogden Half next week. Last year I thought I was in great shape for Ogden. Even though this year my intervals and builders havent been as quick. I think the consistant 80+ mile weeks have bounced me back and has put me about 6 weeks ahead of my own personal schedule.

Grateful for health in my life! #hurtsogood #sogood #MIHSpencerSimpson

Race

Running isnt complicated. You train and build a base and make deposits over a training period and on race day you make a huge withdrawel and push your body to the limit for that day. Recover and do it again.

Went into the Ogden Half with some high hopes of running a sub 1:09 and to get as close to my time as last year. Even though we had a major flaw in the weather with the nasty rain and headwind I saw that as no excuse and still went for it.

This pretty much sums up the race right here. I set the pace for the first mile of 5:22. Ken came with me and took the lead on the 2nd mile with 5:28  with a good solid climb.  I took over mile 3 with 5:18 and never looked back. Kept pushing the pace and built a solid lead over the next 10 miles. Going into the last mile body shut down and could go no faster than 5:30 pace. Ken came charging back and beat me by 2 seconds.

Happy for Ken for the win, he ran well and ran a smart race. Pretty ticked with my effort and the way I closed the last mile. This will be the last time I talk about this race, hopefully I can approve and finish strong in my next race whenever that will be.

I'm assuming it had to do with last week off and some hill sprints on Monday. So thats what I will stick to for my sucking wind today. On to better workouts!

Cut the usual 10 down to 9 due time constraints. Legs were pretty darn heavy today, but the tightness and soreness is gone in the calves which is a good progression forward. Rough week, I think that week off took more out of me than I thought, but hopefully will benificial as the miles are going to be getting racked up over the Summer.

About 5 minutes later I got caught in a path of a moose. The thing wouldnt leave the trail. I just looked at him for awhile until it finally went on its way. Did 3 mile warmup couple of bathroom breaks

Workout started off just great. Planning a breakdown workout and building off the first mile. Mile one hit 5:34 and felt great leg wise mile 2 and was on pace for 5:33 then my stomach went south. Quick bathroom break again, started back up and stomach flaired up again. Now I am getting a big sideache most likely from dehydration but gave it ago again and just didnt have it unfortunetely. Ran 645 pace to the end.

Well on to next week. Not bummed about this at all, cant beat myself up on stomach issues, just praying for better results next week. I feel now I know where to start for builders 530-535 pace and by the end of the Summer be down in the low 520s to high teens would be great.

Pleasant View 5K

Met Jon, Riley, and Ken at the finish line in PV. I ended up getting a little over 5 mile warm with some strides before the race started.

Goal was I had no goal. I just wanted to see where my fitness was at and just build throughout the Summer.

Race is probably the best course in the state if you want a fast 5K. First mile flat, 2nd mile is bombing down hill, and 3rd is a net loss with some rolling hills.

As the gun went off Riley took off and it was cool as heck to watch him easily pull away. Although I do give myself credit for hanging with him for about a half a mile.

During mile 2 ken closed the gap and we ran together for about a quarter mile, he gapped me a bit on the first hill in the 3rd mile and held the same gap to the finish.

Great race to come in 3rd in. PR on that course, though I would like to race that course again in the fall, I think it would be a new unofficial down hill PR.

Afterwards I ran my son in that is 8 years old, he ran a PR with a time of 25:38. Then I cooled down with Riley and Ken and enjoyed a killer breakfast and watched the parade afterwards with the family.

Love the small town races, always nice and organized. Commiting myself to more racing in the Summer. I thought high mileage training would be enough but I need the exertion from a race, to get comfortable with the uncomfortable.

Did the annual Cherry Days 5K today up in North Ogden.

I got there about an hour before to stretch and get in a easy warm up with bathroom breaks.

Switched over the flats and did some strides which I felt really lose and ready to go.

Got to the start line and saw Trevor Ricks standing off the side with a bib on. Trevor runs at Weber State or did not sure. But anyways I wasn't worried I am always focused on personal achievements and running the best I can for the day.

Well the gun went off and I found myself in the lead right from the start. A couple high school kids went with me and I started talking to one of them. Seemed like a really nice kid, gave him some advice and just focused on the race. During the 1st mile I could here someone behind me and they weren't leaving. About a mile and a quarter they were still tucked right behind me and I know it's good racing strategy but I always feel out of rhythm I always think they are going to kick my heals. (Kenneth!!) Anyway I had to take a peak and it was Trevor. I knew he wasn't leaving me. So I stayed focus and was just thinking how I could pull this off. I kept my same pace and around mile 2 trevor came passing me with ease.

So now it was my turn to draft. I decided to make my move with a half mile left and not look back and hopefully keep the pace to the finish. So I eased up to him and ran next to him for a couple seconds then the last turn of the race I took the lead and ran as hard as I could. I was hurting and wheezing! Haha! But managed a 63 the last quarter and came in with a 31 second course record.

Great job to Trevor he honestly set the pace for the day. He ran solid as well! But it always feels good walking away with the win! I think that makes 7 out of the last 8, not sure.

Jaerdan ran a little over 26 minutes which was a course PR for him by 2 minutes.

Splits were progressive which I think this 5K needs to be ran with the hills for 2 miles.

5:24; 5:04; 4:54 and 17 seconds last .10

Hobbler Half Marathon

Honestly I didnt know what to think about this course when I first heard about it. I knew it had a good downhill and could be a fast course. Now that I have ran it, the course is for sure fast, but they didnt mention all the rollers throughout the entire race. Rollers made the course challenging and I actually enjoyed the break from the down hill. Which made for a fast race.

Drove down with Riley Friday night and stayed at his wifes aunts house which was perfect, saved us alot of time in the morning.

Got to the buses nice and early and by the time I got there I needed to go to the bathroom and since they didnt have any I found the secret bathroom which was well needed.

Warmed up at the start, managed a little over a couple miles with another bathroom break and did 2X30 second strides and was ready to go.

As the gun went off I went out with Riley for the first mile, probably a little quick for me but I feel that I quick first mile sets the race for me. After the first mile it was Riley, another guy and myself but by a mile and a half it was just Riley and me, and by mile 2 it was just Riley, he managed to put a good 8-10 second gap on me. Which was expected, my goal was to attach a long rope to Riley and try to see him the entire race. 2nd goal was to hit as much splits under 5:10 and close the race strong.

Well today was just one of those days, everything felt solid all the way thru the finish. I managed to see Riley for the entire race, mostly because there were long straightaways, which mentally helped alot for me.

It still really hasnt sunk in that I hit a 1:07.24 for the race. My previous PR was a 1:08.28 in Snow Canyon so to come out and really run a A++ time for me is pretty exciting. I am just glad that training is going so well. Body is responding to workouts like it should. Hopefully I can ride this into the fall and get a solid time in the Marathon.

Stoked for Riley! He is running well right now and it couldnt happen to a better dude! Congrats on another win my friend and a new course record.

Good to be back after a quick trip to STG/Mesquite, loved the heat but loving the chilled mornings up North.

Legs felt great today, felt rejuvinated and ready for some mileage.

Run was Monroe your boat, stomach wasnt to happy with me this morning, but loving the cloud cover and little bit of rain at the end of our run.

Still dont know what I am racing on Friday at Des News, need to decide today.

So I decided that I was going to stick to my racing schedule that I planned for the year and run the Des News Marathon on Friday.

Pacing is going to a shot in the dark. All I have to go off of is my 1:07.24 a couple weeks ago in the half. But I will go for it like normal and pray for the best outcome as possible. Should be a good race.

pacing for that course is always a shot in the dark, even if you know exactly where you're at. take it easy over those first three downhill miles -- i promise it will pay off for you around 20-22. that course is all about finding the right balance of power and finesse. :) best of luck.

Thanks for the advice Allie. I've only ran this race once back in 07' and didnt have the greatest experience(hence I went out way to fast).Hopefully a better result tomorrow.

Deseret News Marathon

What a great day at the races. At the start of the marathon we couldnt have asked for a better weather, nice chill around 55 degrees, slight wind but nothing crazy.

Going into this race I wasnt really sure of what type of shape I was in for a marathon. Mostly been focusing on half stuff and doing alot of intervals and had been slacking in the long run a bit. Looking at the registration list on Monday and being bullied a bit by Riley ;-) it looked like I could go after the win or at least get a solid long run in and walk a way with at least some money.

Got to the start line about an 70 minutes before the race started. Immediately hit the bathroom then went and found a spot to lay down, was perfect and I actually fell asleep for 20 minutes which was a shock but I will take it. Started my warm up about 20 minutes before hit the bathroom again and called it good.

Race began it quickly seperated to the contendors of the race. Jon Kotter, Jace Nye, myself, Bill Cobbler and could here others behind. About 3 miles in it was down to Jace, Jon and I. First 4-5 miles were very patient and just let them come. Talked to Jon abit and he is a really nice guy. He ran a great smart race and had a solid win.

Mile 5 is where I feel the race began though. Jon quickly put in  surge and gapped Jace and I. So I told Jace we need to be patient and work together and try to reel him back in. So thats what we agreed and went for it. Most of our miles were in the 520s going down and around 7-9 we had a couple of mid 540s and mid 610s due to the climb up to little mountain.

As we hit the out and back section of the course we saw Jon coming out of the little canyon and I timed the gap he had about a 1:45 lead on Jace and I. Hit the half marathon in 1:14:09. I immediately went into competitive mode and started focusing on 520s for as long as I could. I felt that if I could hold that pace to the finish I might have a shot to win. Also thinking that a negative split and 1:11 second half would be a great personal goal. Around mile 17 I started getting the flood of memories coming back to me on why I havent ran this marathon in 8 years. My calves were starting to lock up and fatigue was setting in but I could still see Jon up ahead and I faught every tooth and nail to give into the pain. At mile 18 I hit a mile in the 550s and thought this could go bad real quick. Jace had since dropped back now I was running solo I decided to give it anothe push and hit 19 in mid 530s and could see Jon. A spectator said the gap was 90 seconds, I thought is he coming back? I still might have a shot. So I stayed focus ran the next miles as best as could. I got to mile 22 and looked up and couldnt see Jon anymore. Now realizing that the only way to win this race was for Jon to drop and I knew that wasnt happening. So I took a quick look back and didnt see anyone close. And made the rash decision to shut it down. ran the rest of the race in in the 610s. Think I hit mile 25 in low 540s due to the running on the parade route.

Ended up finishing in 2nd place with a time of 2:32:01.

For this race I feel a good deposit was made. Sure I might have to take 3-4 days off to recover but I am not completely blown. I now know that I need more tempo runs in my life in the 9-10 mile range. Now I need to focus and recover and shoot for a solid time in STG.

I guess there was a little contraversy at the end of the race. I was told that Jon had ran the original finish route off of North Temple but I was told to go to the parade route by the officers. Also was told by the race directors that the lead guys were going to run the 10K finish route, so thats what I did.

Anyway some were trying to get Jon DQ. I quickly shut that idea down fast. Thinking okay Jon ran the right route and so did I. Also time gap wouldnt have made a difference anyways. If I had lost by maybe 30 seconds, maybe there wouldve been an argument but even still I dont think I wouldve challenged it knowing that both routes are USATF Certified.

Jon ran awesome today. Also he is a very, very cool guy. Havent talked much to him before hand but  seems very humble and grateful about his running.

Around a mile and half into our run I thought I was going to get murdered!! We came to the underpass by washington Blvd. There was this homeless kid walking his dog and just stopped in the middle of the path. I thought oh what a nice gesture to let us pass. But as soon as we made our pass, the kid made eye contact with me and started chasing me with his dog! Then he stopped, I started laughing a bit and got in front of Riley because I was sort of scared. Then the kid started chasing us again! I was gone! Dark in the middle of Ogden, no way no how. TOP OF UTAH HALF

Another race down, and another deposit into the bank.

Headed up to Logan Friday afternoon with Jon, Riley and Corey. Before we got our gear at the expo we stopped at the VOORAY outlet in Logan and I went nuts! Lots of killer deals and pretty awesome stuff! Great support from a growing local company. If your somewhat intrigued check out the gear at Vooray.com

Got our bib and saw that Anthony wasnt on the list of runners and we lost Bryant that night due to a hamstring strain. But gained Mike Hardy and Trevor Ricks, both recently graduated from Weber State.

Stayed at my cousins house in Logan, grateful for that, saved us alot of time, and grateful again not having to drive up in the morning.

Got to the start of the race with about 40 minutes to go time Managed a couple miles with some bathroom breaks in the secret bathrooms. Always nice not waiting in line,

Race:

As soon as the gun went off the pack seperated almost instantly. I found myself chasing Jason and Riley which is nothing new to me. But I knew the pace they were going and wanted to get out to a quick start for the first couple of miles. I noticed after the first mile that this race could go south very quickly. Legs just didnt have the pop like they did in the Hobbler race and breathing was a little deeper than I wouldve liked it to be. So after a mile I slowly faded from a 5:03 first mile to a 5:16 second mile. Around mile 3 I could hear footsteps coming to me and I thought it was just one guy coming. Took a look back and could see Fritz and Nate then shortly behind was Mike and Benjamin.

Hit mile 3 in 5:13 and at the same time got passed like I wasnt even moving. Went from 3rd to 7th just like that. I was like what the heck is going on I am still clipping a good pace but these guys are moving.

Mile 4 was 5:16, again the group is gapping me.

Mile 5- 5:05; maintained that gap and the legs are feeling like they are coming around but my breathing was way off. Sort of felt the same way on my Tuesday pickup, legs felt great but breathing was off.

By now at mile 6 - 5:00, I managed to catch Nate and ran with him for a half mile and told him we need to work to catch the group ahead but wasnt feeling the best at that point.

Mile 7- 5:02 again another great clip and managed to catch Benjamin, he saw me coming and when I passed he immediately attached behind me. I sort of made a surge because I really didnt want anyone drafting at that point especially when I just made the gap.

At mile 8-5:07, I caught Fritz and briefly talked with him, so much respect for Fritz. One of those runners that I will always look up to and just grateful to hit the roads and compete with him when he is there. Fritz is a top notch act and talent. Great guy! We worked together for about a mile then I made a slight gap on him but not much.

At mile 9-5:15 I thought maybe since I reeled in 75% of the group that passed me at mile 3 that I might be able to catch Mike. but that was briefly lived because Mike was running a great pace and when I hit mile 10 at 5:16 he had a solid gap still and I knew he wasnt slowing. Also mile 10 Fritz is still there so I knew that 4th wasnt in the bag, that there was work that needed to be done still.

Mile 11-5:25, Starting some gradual climbs and my legs just felt beat! At the same part I am not strong on hills quite yet, being doing some work but not there. I take a quick look back at this mile and saw Fritz coming. I knew the inevitable was going to happen.

Mile 12- 5:40, Fritz caught me in this mile. I ran with him for a second but as we took the last right and climbed once more before the last left and downhill finish. He had gapped me by about 10 meters. I knew if I wanted to fight for the 4th spot I needed to catch and hold on for dear life. By the end of the mile I ended up catching Fritz.

Mile 13- 5:10, Battle to the finish! I made a decision that at the beginning of the mile that I needed to push and hope I didnt fade at the end. So I made a quick surge on Fritz well it felt like a surge at least. I managed to get a little space and rolled into the finish in 4th. Managed 49 seconds for the last .20

Overall bitter/happiness for my effort today. Even though it wasnt a PR it was the fastest time for me on the course. I really feel like the smoke in the air played a little factor with the breathing, and there was no tail wind that you normally get coming out of the canyon.

Really just glad to push and maintain a solid pace when the course wasnt running as fast as I thought it should. Glad to see my running family. Awesome job by everyone. Congrats to Riley on making the win look easy again.

After the race cooled down with Riley, Ken and Denver for 6 miles.

Awesome mileage for the day!

Sluggish run today. Met with Manny, Jon, Denver and Riley at the pond. Ended up running to Bret's house picking him and Ken up. I got dropped pretty easily today as the group went a little quicker then I attended to go.  But nice recovery pace made the run somewhat enjoyable, also will be more beneficial as the week goes on hopefully.

Nice easy trail run with Riley, Matt and Jon.

Coming back on off the trail and on the road we had some idiot that brushed me with his car. Riley threw his hands in the air like what the heck.

The kid had the nerve to come back and tell us that we need to get out of the Mother Pleepin road. I started yelling at the kid and he told me to go out to the road so he could hit me because he didnt feel me the first time.

Pretty frustrating, and maybe I am blowing it out of proportion. At the same part, I am really glad he came back, basically volunteered his license plate number to us. Thinking a visit by police for wreckless driving sounds good to me.

Met Ken, Riley and Jon super early at Smiths to do a Marathon workout.

Goal today was to hit 8-10 miles roughly between 6:05 to 6:10 pace then jump into mile repeats at goal Marathon pace. This workout is teaching the legs to run goal pace on fatigued legs.

Started into are warmup and 2 miles in we started to into the workout.

Ended up doing 8 miles with splits of 5:59; 6:09; 6:08; 5:53; 5:52; 5:48; 6:00; 5:49

Had about a minute rest and jumped into the mile repeats

splits were 5:21; 5:17; 5:19; 5:16; 5:12 overall rest between sets were about 70 seconds with a walk/jog.

Definitely quick on the repeats but felt very controlled. This is probably the best I have felt in a workout in a long time. Felt solid the entire run, and felt like I had more to give after the workout. Which is exactly where I want to be right now. Things are looking great and the work is starting show, almost time to put it all together.

Excited and nervous are my exact feelings too. Looks like you won't be doing much of taper? Does your body just race better without too big of a taper?

Dude, you're ready to throw down a good one. It's awesome to see the synergies the Ogden Crew (and UV guys/crew) get from training together. You guys are lucky to have such a good group.

Funny you mention the dream thing. It usually happens to me every year within a few weeks of a big race too. I haven't had one yet this year though. But its usually a similar thing... Missed the start of the race and am frantically trying to catch up. Last year I think it involved riding subways and going through building hallways, etc. Nothing resembling the actual course. Crazy. While in the moment, you feel such despair; all this hard work training good for nothing! I would guess such dreams are pretty common place for runners.

I am primed and ready to go! No excuse race for me. Training has gone well and plan on going for broke like always. I totally agree with the training group, sometimes I feel spoiled and also dont realize what I have.

How are you feeling? Your training has been spot on since July. Far as I'm concerned I think a PR is coming your way! Also if you dont mind, what is the goal? Ive always enjoyed working the miles with ya, maybe we can again this year.

From JPark on Mon, Sep 28, 2015 at 22:34:22 from 67.172.224.201

The mileage and consistency have been okay and I am/have been relatively healthy, but I haven't been able to find my top gears this year. No big workouts to build a lot of confidence. Honestly, I'd be happy with sub-2:30 this year, and that may be a stretch. Going to give it my best, but I don't have super high hopes. I'd love to work with ya, but you're in way better shape and I expect you'll be well ahead of me from the gun. There should be plenty of fast company for ya to work with though. PR is definitely there for your taking, go get it!

STG MARATHON 2015

Pre Race:

Woke up at 3:30 to eat breakfast and go to the bathroom after both were successful I laid in Bed until 4:15. Continued the morning with another bathroom break, sipped some water, then headed out the door.

Got to the buses around 4:55 and waited for Denver Cook and rode up with him, also while we were waiting I bumped into Dave Holt and so we rode up with and his brother. Got up to the starting line with about 40 minutes to the start. Said some hello's and went to the bathroom which was another success. After that I talked to Scott, Mike, Fritz, Jon Kotter and many others for a brief moment before getting warmed up for the race.

Race:

Gun went off right at 6:45am. I immediately looked around to find Scott and Mike and could see them ahead so I attached behind for a couple of seconds. My plan was to hit the first mile around overall goal pace then ease into the 2nd mile a little slower. By mile 1 I was in no mans land with a 5:27 split. 2nd mile was spot on with a 5:37. Looked ahead and could see Scott and Mike together mentally I and physically I knew that I needed to be running with them so I just set my site on them and tried to work the next upcoming miles til I caught up to them. I eventually caught them around 5 miles and then began to work into there pace. At the time I felt great and high hopes that this was going to be a great day. I even told them that the stomach was feeling good and was ready to roll.

Well that was short lived. As we started climbing up Veyo I tucked behind Scott as he set the pace for that hill, my stomach started turning South fast! Then my pace slowed and Mike passed me, I tried to tuck behind him but as I pushed the pace the stomach pain got worse and caused me to slow quite a bit. I hit Veyo in a 6:10 split and the next mile in 6:03 and had to eventually hit the bathroom. SO FRUSTRATING!! Hit mile 10 at 6:24. Came out of the bathroom feeling better and optimistic that I could still hit a PR. Legs were feeling great didnt feel fatigued then again about a half mile later stomach was just turning! I yelled out WHY?!? Gosh Dangit! I faught this for the next 3 miles thinking it has to go away this cant be happening right now. Eventually gave in at 13 and hit another 6+ split. Came out of the bathroom with toilet paper in hand thinking I dont care anymore. If I have to go again I will do it while running. Eventually The toilet paper was gone at mile 15 where it was a run wipe! Lost probably another 15+ seconds on that mile too.

After mile 15 I just started thinking. This is happening, nothing you can do about it, lets take it mile by mile, the legs are feeling good, lets do this and see what's might happen! So thats what I did. I could see Dave Holt ahead so I set my site on just catching up to him. I finally came up to him around a little over mile 20. I tried motivating him, but he just gave me a big push in the back and telling me that I looked good and that I need to go! Over the years Dave and I have ran some awesome races together. He has been a positive influence on me in the marathon. I owe him everything! He got me to a PR time last year and there is no way that wouldnt have happened without his teamwork, coaching, and just overall being a great guy! Dave if this is truly your last marathon, I thank you for everything that you have done for me. Love ya bro!

After passing Dave I could see Jon Kotter ahead which was way unusual to see. I knew Jon was fit, but as I caught him and running with him for about a half mile. He was not feeling the best and was having stomach issues also. I eventually made a small gap on him around 23 miles and set on finishing the best that I could possibly could. I started to feel some fatigue around 25 miles and tried to push through and did my best. I could hear footsteps coming and looked back and saw Nate coming. He eventually caught me, and ran with me for a second. I gave him a little bump on the back and said finish strong man! Well we hit the 2nd to last turn at the round a bout and I saw Taylor walking. I tried my best to motivate him to finish. I grabbed his arm and said lets go and finish, you are still in the top 10! I hit the last corner knowing my spot.

Even though I didnt hit that PR today I really enjoyed the finish. It was my wife's grandpa's first time seeing  a marathon finish, I had family and friends cheering. I forgot everything that happened during that race. I just thought it is what it is and I did the best that I could for what the day brought. Came into the finish at 2:28:28. and a 6th overall finish.

Splits- 5:27; 5:37; 5:13; 5:15; 5:15; 5:11; 5:14; (6:10; 6:03; 6:24; 6:14; 5:52; 6:15; 6 miles from HELL!!) 5:34; 5:22; 5:16; 5:28; 5:28; 5:56; 5:32; 5:15; 5:35; 5:31; 5:27; 5:42; 5:47 and 5:35 pace for last .30

Found out that Aaron won his 3rd STG Marathon and gave him a huge hug. Fritz ran amazing again. Fritz seriously is my running hero! He pushes through pain more than anyone I know in the marathon and just gets it done. Congrats Fritz! Scott on his amazing 3rd place finish! Scott I love ya brother! I am truly sorry for what had happened leading up before the race. You are my brother and nothing but respect for you. You truly are a class act. Mike, Nate, Taylor! Awesome runners! So glad to be able to compete and run with you guys. Awesome Friends!

Justin again ran great! Called out his 2:30 time perfectly!

Well 2015 has come and gone. I am looking forward to 2016 race, It will be my 10th consecutive STG marathon so I plan on making it my best. But first its time to recover, get healthy and enjoy the rest of the year and the upcoming Holiday season. Congrats again to everyone.

Also just an FYI, Riley Cook is running the Chicago Marathon this Sunday for his opportunity to qualify for the Olympic Trials. If you have a second wish Riley the best of luck! He has worked his tail off this year to obtain this opportunity! GO GET IT RILEY!!

Nice write-up Benny Van. The stomach issues are very frustrating, and after awhile the temptation to throw in the towel and give up on the race gets very strong. But you fought off that devil and finished what you set out to do, even if it was a bit slower than you deserved. That takes class and heart. Way to represent and do the best you could.

And thanks for the shout out! Six days...

Lots of positivity here. That's tough to do during a tough race and it's even harder to do after. We all have much to learn from this report: a reminder of the friendly, yet competitive spirit and that the PRs, or even non-PR really good marathons, when they come at a certain level of running, should be celebrated.

WORKOUT

Met with Jon, Riley, Dave, Denver and Matt at Smiths. We all did the first couple of miles together then split to do our workouts. Matt, and Denver was doing a 5 mile progression tempo and Riley helped pace them. Dave was just going easy. Jon and I proceeded to do 2X3 mile Fartlek workout.

Goal was to run alternating 90/75 for quarter mile. Rest was 3 minutes in between sets.

Splits- 87,75,85,77,88,78,85,77,88,79,86,76 Total time 16:30 5:29 avg

2nd set- 88,76,88,75,90,77,89,81,87,81,89,72 Total time 16:41 5:33 avg

Great overall workout. Felt strong for the most part, had some slower splits do to a pretty nasty headwind coming from the east. Glad I nailed the easy portion of the workout. That part seemed to be the hardest coming off a quick 400, the body naturally wanted to rest but had to still give a solid effort.

SNOW CANYON HALF MARATHON

Going into this race I have felt that I properly recovered from St. George Marathon and I have done some good maintenance workouts in the last month to help keep some fitness levels. Knowing that Snow Canyon is a fast course and comparing it to Top of Utah Half, I felt that my fitness was the same as TOU and had a goal to run about 1-2 minutes faster if the body would handle it.

Got to the start of the race with about 45 minutes to spare. Hit the bathrooms, did a 2 mile warm with some strides and felt ready to roll.

Ken, Jon and I had discussed race plans the night before and splits. My plan was to go out at 5 min/pace in the first mile, ease up on the second and then hit as many sub 5s as possible thru 10 miles then hit sub 520s in the last 5K. With Ken he was going to start out more conservative and then attack the downhill portion hoping to catch me and then work the last 5K together. Jon was shooting for sub 1:10 and was going to use Ken and I as a pacing aid.

Anyway, race got started and I jumped out to quick start hitting 2:24 for the first half mile. By then I was alone, I could here footsteps of course but no one seemed to press forward wanting to run with me. I eased up the next half mile and hit the first mile in 4:59. Perfect, right where I wanted to be. Next mile eased a little and hit 5:08. Third mile the pacer introduced herself and said she would be taking me through the course and also said she would give me updates on the lead every mile if I wanted so I didnt have to turn around. End of mile 3 was 4:59. Now the middle splits I dont have or remember, for some reason I think my GARMIN had a corrupt file and when uploading to Strava and GarminConnect it completely wiped the run! Really upset and frustrating.

Start of mile 4 the pacer said I had a 60 yard gap lead and 3rd place was about another 40 yards behind. In this mile I thought I was going to lose the race. So, the 2nd place guy made a huge push on this mile. I had 60 yards on him to start the mile, by the end of this mile he had a 30 yard lead! I also know I hit a low 4:40 on this mile. So this seems like a complex math question, but he had to hit a sub 4:30 on this mile. Only thing that gave me hope when he passed was his breathing. He was laboring bad, when I heard that, I just let him go, sort of smiled and mentally said, see you in a couple of miles once the race flattens out. Well thats exactly what happened. I kept about the same gap through mile 7, hitting between 4:45 to 4:55 splits. Mile 8 had the first little roller, by now I had closed the gap a little but as we went up this hill, I could see this kids pace slow dramatically, I pushed the hill and surged into the flat, he came with me for 10 yards then he was gone. Pacer again started giving me updates, and the gap just got bigger. I admit the only person I was worried about was Ken catching up to me and getting me in the last mile so I knew the race wasnt over by a long shot.

As I hit mile 10 I came through in 50:06. Thought hey, I could a 16:30 the last 5K and come in around 1:06:40 and that would be killer to end the season on that note. As I got into the Entrada hills the legs just didnt respond with what I was hoping. Goal was sub 5:20s and I know I hit 5:34, 5:36, and 5:22 and came in the last 5K in 17:44. I wish again that I couldve finished faster, but I did what I could, I was laboring pretty hard the last 3 miles and ran as tough as I could. I felt the pressure come off around 12.5 miles when the pacer said you are going to win, I cant see anyone behind you. Came into the finish with a time of 1:07:50. A little disappointed in the time due to where I was at mile 10 but also thinking I havent had any signifacant increase in fitness since August, also Snow Canyon is 1-2 minutes faster than TOU Half. Time wise, I was right where I shouldve been.

Ken and Jon came in 3rd and 4th. Second place was about 40-50 seconds back.

STG Races did a fantastic job like always. Great finishing area, smooth bus transition, perfectly marked course. If you havent ran Snow Canyon its a must if it fits a late season race.

Cooled down with Ken, Taylor and Jon for a mile then ran a mile barefoot on the football field while getting beat by Riley Cooks daughter in some epic 100 meter racing.

Ran up on the upper BST from Mt. Ogden Park. The only positive to this run was about 5 miles in when the clouds dropped. Sort of a surreal experience, and I guess the little bit of snow that was on the ground. Other than that my legs are so sore still. Hitting the hot tub and the wintercrest tonight!

Was planning on 20 miles today. But do to a tight hammy and not feeling 100% recovered from last weeks race it felt it was wise to cut back the long run today.

I am starting a training block for the Phoenix Marathon in February. Never done this race but have heard great things. Also this will allow for some good excuses on heading down to STG and mesquite at least once a month for some long runs in the somewhat warmer weather.

3X2 MILE WORKOUT

Met Riley at The Pond at 5:15 to start our workout.

Did 3 mile warmup with 3X30 second strides also had a couple secret bathroom stops.

Goal for me today was to hit an avg of 5:13 for the 2 mile

First set- 5:12; 5:12

3 minute jog

Second set- 5:10; 5:16

3:30 jog

3rd set- 5:13; 5:31.

Thought I did well with this workout. Wish I couldve been within 5 seconds on the last mile, bu that will come. Felt pretty tough on every set around 1.20 miles in, had a couple close moments where I thought that this was the workout that Riley was going to get me to vomit. But just some dry heeving after every set, sensitive stomach isn't fun sometimes.

Met Riley and Matt at the pond to head out West to hit the Aerobic Builder route.

Did 3 mile warm with 3X30 second strides.

Second set I was on my own

Workout was spot on. Felt rough at first, couldnt get my mucous under control the first 4 miles. The last 4 felt alot better. Except the last mile was a good push, lungs were burning. Happy with how things went, I am pretty sure this is my best 2X4 mile to date. Feeling like I am on a roll lately and the body is responding well. Hopefully I can continue to see progression.

Many of you know or have raced against Tim Wight in the past.

Tim was involved in a  mulitple car accident in Idaho on Sunday night and lost his life.

Tim was one of my running hero's when I started running, he was always giving me advice on how to be a better runner.

I remember my first ever win was because of Tim. It was the winter circuit 5K race in 2008. The whole goal of that race was to keep up with Tim. I ran the first 2 miles with him and he was like, Benny, you are looking strong, try to get up there and go for the win. Ahead was Jon Allen, Chad Derum and Cody Draper at the time we thought of them as the BIG BAD RUNNING BLOG GUYS and wanted to beat them oh so bad! Haha! I said, no way man, you go get them! No, go get them Benny! You never no til you try. So I took off and ended up beating Chad by less than a half second. Tim gave me the biggest hug after and all he said was, See I told you!

I will never forget Tim, I will miss the runs that we had together when he was in town visiting family. I will never forget all the running advice that he gave me. He was so positive and uplifting all the time. I will miss you Tim more than you know. Love ya Mighty Mouse!

Enjoyed the nice warm weather inside my basement. Nice 73 degrees, shorts and no t-shirt. Who knew it could be this nice at the end of December.

Another treadmill day. Been having some tooth pain since I went to the dentist 3 weeks ago. Pain is getting worse so just sitting here in the dental office most likely going to get an emergency root canal. No beuno!

I believe you mean to say no bueno! Pero estas correcto, duelo de la cepilla no es bueno. Especialmente para correr.

If I understand what you are meaning to say, Entonces, ¿cuál es el mejor cepillo de dientes para su uso como un atleta?

From Glory in the long run on Wed, Jan 06, 2016 at 08:44:20 from 216.50.128.2

I misused cepilla for diente. I wasn't implying you don't brush!

What I meant was, "Duelo (duele?) en el diente no es bueno."

Pain in tooth=no good.

Serviste un mision?
