Personal:

I am 27.  Have done 33 marathons and ultras. Really trying to get in shape to get back to running the miles I want to. I love to read and worked for four years in a bookstore. I like to keep track of the books I read. Currently I work as a 6th & 7th grade history teacher at the only charter school in Berkshire County, as well as serve as the coach for the cross country team! Been experimenting as a pescatarian (eating only fish) since August 10, 2011.

Just earned my Master's Degree in Adolescent Education for Social Studies. I have the most wonderful WIFE in the entire world.. EMMA! October 16, 2010

Run when you can, walk when you have to, crawl if you must. Just never give up! - Dean Karnazes -

We are all teachers and we are all students in this sport. - Dean Karnazes -

The simple act of putting one foot in front of the other and moving forward at an accelerated rate can be one of life's greatest - and simplest - pleasures. ~Dean Karnazes

"Your beliefs become your thoughts, your thoughts become your words, your words become your actions, your actions become your habits, your habits become your values, your values become your destiny." - MK Gandhi

"The marathon mercilessly rips off the outer layers of our defenses and leaves the raw human, vulnerable and naked. It is here you get an honest glimpse into the soul of an individual. Every insecurity and character flaw is open and on display for all the world to see. No communication is ever more real, no expression ever more honest. There is nothing left to hide behind. The marathon is the great equalizer. Ever movement, every word spoken and unspoken, is radiant truth. The veil has been obliterated. These are the profound moments of human interaction that I live for." - Dean Karnazes

An "easy" 5k on the treadmill to shake things out. Legs felt trashed from yesterday. Emm was still in Boston. I took it easy. Really slow. Even walked for a bit. Ended up with a 5k in 32:50.

I've found one of the best ways to shed a sickness is to get out there and run. And, as it WAS Valentine's Day and Emm was also sick we decided to go for a jog outside. Oh, did I mention it was 47 degrees out? Seriously, unless on a death bed, how could you not go outside. Went to the "loop". Started off slow. Emm went to the car after four miles I think. I kept counting cars leaving. It's a dead end cul-de-sac and I counted no less than 11 cars that left while we were running! Splits were:

  • Mile 1: 9:16
  • Mile 2: 8:58
  • Mile 3: 8:30
  • Mile 4: 8:03
  • Mile 5: 7:48
  • Mile 6: 8:18

10:00 AM - What a change a day makes. Yesterday was near 60. Today it is 28 and falling, with projected high of about 22 today. Blustery winds with gusts of 45 mph. The trees are dancing like marionettes. I was going to go to Taconic high school to run, but with the last two weeks of long runs, I figured maybe a shorter one was in order. Will try to stack runs so that I run on Sat, Sun, and Mon before I go to Florida to see Su and Rocc with Emmy.

Hopped on the treadmill and did a solid run starting slower, but gradually increasing pace. Did a .5 mile cool down barefoot. Was warm on the feet!

On another note, I went with Emm all day to run errands, only to get back at night and find that I had lost my swipe card to get into work! I am hopefully going to rely on a coworker that lives in Adams to help me get into BArT. Maybe it was time. The card had been on my keychain for a year come Monday. I emailed my boss and everyone so hopefully they can change whatever needs to be changed. I feel like a failure though! Blah!

Emmy and I are really excited. Monday we are leaving to go to Orlando for the week to go see Su and Rocco. I can't wait to go to Sea World, run on the beach, and just have a great time! I haven't seen them since the wedding!

Emmy and I went on a tour of the YMCA today as well. We are thinking about joining and there are perks for paying in full in advance, like we tend to do. If we pay in cash up front, we get a $50.00 discount on our membership, so instead of $720.00 for 12 months for the two of us, it becomes $670  AND, perhaps the best part, they give us 6 MONTHS FREE! That's 18 months for 50 bucks less than a 1 year membership and this equates to only $18 and change for each of us per month. Seems doable. Building is nice, machines are fantastic, and there is a swimming pool as well. We are thinking about getting rid of DirecTV to help with the bills, and instead concentrate on having a membership here. I guess Emm says since we are in the city we will still have automatic basic cable. I could deal with that!
