In late 2008 I decided I needed to get in better shape and started running again.  I ran my first formal road race ever, a half marathon, in late 2009.

(unofficial) Track 1 Mile - 7:32 (4/24/2010)  6:56 (9/27/2010)

5k - 27:31 - Riverview Run on 06/11/2010
22:39 - Gatorade Steelers 5k on 09/04/2010

10k - 50:43 - Riverside Run on 04/10/2010

Half - 2:02:58 - Just a Short Run on 03/27/2010
1:51:47 - IKEA Montour Trail Half on 09/11/2010

Short-Term Running Goals:

2011 Races:

Sept 25 - The Great Race 10k (59:15)
Nov 5 - Dirt Monster 5mi (52:59)

2012 Races:

June 8 - Riverside 5k  (27:49)
Sept 2 - Gatorade Steelers 5k (route) with Steve!  (27:39)
Sept 30 - The Great Race 10k (route)  (53:48)
Nov 3 - The Dirt Monster 5mi (52:55)

2013 Races:

May - Pittsburgh Marathon (started, but DNF about the half way point)
June - Riverview 5k  - Bummed I missed signing up for this one. It's one of my favorites!
Sept - Gatorade/Steelers 5k. (Signed up!)
Sept - IKEA Montour Trail Half  (prob not, but leaving it on here)
Sept - The Great Race 10k (My Running 101 goal race)
Nov - Dirt Monster 5mi (Gotta do it again no matter what!)

Long-Term Running Goals:

Finish recovering from my injuries and build mileage.  That is all.

Personal:

My name is Wes, I'm married with two wonderful children. The nickname BaldNSpicy came from the fact that I have been balding for a (long) while now and spicy for my love of very spicy foods (Thai and extremely hot wings are my favorites).  If eating doesn't bring me near tears and leave me sweating, it's not worth eating.  :-)

Oh, and I'm also known for my doorags.

A couple of miles on the TM.  Not too bad for the first run of 2013.  Yesterday, had a nice little visit with the podiatrist.  Nothing serious, but without surgery (no guarantee of relief and a long recovery time) I'll just have to live with the discomfort.  So, with that knowledge, I can now revise my 2013 plans...

Sorry to hear that there won't be relief without surgery. Hope the podiatrist had other news that was good.

huge bummer...hope you are able to still get out and run a bit?

Podiatrist news was better than I thought on the baby toe, but what I expected/knew with the neuromas. I'm going to give my toe a couple days to heal since I'm feeling the pain, but then I'd like to start a plan that will get me to a marathon sometime this year. I think it's going to come down to whether or not I can get the mileage up and keep the neuromas manageable. Only time and mileage will tell, but I'm trying to stay positive about it.

Thanks for the support guys!

I'll have to put in my workouts from the past few weeks, but they've been few and far between.

I'm all signed up for the Pittsburgh Full in May and last night my company had their training kickoff. They're not doing formal training, but offered up the training plans and we could sign up for running groups, etc.  I signed up for a couple, but we'll see how it goes.  I didn't know anyone on the lists, so it could be a mixed bag.

I picked up the beginner full plan since it looks like something I could do.  Long run is only 18, but with only about 12 weeks or so to get ready for this, I figure I'll "race" the first half+ then run/walk the rest.

Today was just 30 mins on the TM, watching my HR since it got too cold to go outside.  HR was higher than I'd expect for the pace, but I think it's to be expected since it's been a week since I ran last.  The ladies weren't too happy I came out of the locker room about 7:03 when they close at 7:00.  They must have a life or something...I was heading back upstairs to put in a couple more hours. I was happy to get 3 more minutes away from the desk.  :-)

Here's to preparing for the full!

Quite the coincidence! I haven't stopped by in a while either. :-)

Slower than I'd hoped, but it hasn't stopped which is good enough for me at this point.

Thanks for dropping by!

Been super cold around here, a little snow on the ground but decided to head out about 7pm.  Love running in the snow and rain, but when the temps start dropping, I get a little more careful how my feet land since what just looks wet could be ice.  Almost slipped & fell once, but otherwise, a nice run.

A nice cold run (24F), decently fast on the way out then took it a little easier on the return.  I'm determined to get back on track to get to the Pittsburgh Marathon in May. Looking at my Beginners training plan, I'm OK for mileage so far this week, but I'll do it in 3 run days vs. 4. I should be fine as long as I do some XT on the off days.

Just noticed that my long run for the Mar 24 week is 13 mi.  Just a Short Run Half is on the 30th! I think I'm going to have to sign up for that and make that my intermediate goal race...not to set any PRs but I was really hoping to run that this year.  I like that they give you shorts instead of a shirt.

That is pretty cool that you get shorts, although, I hope they don't still try to put all the sponsers and stuff on it!

keep up the good work..

Are you still on track for your race(s)?

I haven't been blogging, but I am 1/3 of the way through my couch-2-42k program for the Tacoma Marathon on May 5th.

From baldnspicy on Mon, Mar 04, 2013 at 14:23:31 from 71.162.1.30

Missed your comment, Joe. Yes, they do put sponsors on them. One of the front legs has the race logo on it, then the back has the sponsors. Not sure if they get to pick which cheek they get, though. :-)

Mike - Yes, I've still be running but not nearly enough. I've caught up my blog and am going to start blogging daily so I get myself back into daily accountability or I'll never make it past 1/2 way in the Full in May.

I haven't signed up for the Just a Short Run yet. Sure wish I had before the first since the price went up. I wasn't sure I'd be ready for it, but I think I've just got to commit to it and sign up. I really do like that course so I just gotta do it.

Congrats on your progress on your Tacoma Marathon! That sounds awesome and I'm sure you'll do great! Keep me posted.

Ok, I'm going to try something different from now on.  I'm going to commit to blog every day, even if I didn't do anything but get out of bed.  I've had great intentions since before the beginning of the year.  I am committed to running the Pittsburgh Marathon in May, so I've really got to kick it into gear.  My goal is just to finish, even if I have to walk the last 10k or something.  So I'm going to try something new since the week seems to slip by, missing a day here or there due to work or whatever, which adds up into a "dang, it's Sunday again and I've only run twice last week!"

So, from now on, every Sunday, I will login to recap the previous week and record what my Marathon Plan has laid out for me for the upcoming week.  Then, I'll check in every day even if I have nothing to say or report.  I need to make myself more accountable or I'll never be close to ready to finish the Full.

Last week:
I'm not going to comment on last week except to say it started out good, but didn't end well. I had planned on at least getting in my "long" run on Saturday, but that just didn't happen.

Longer than the prescribed 3mi for today, but since I missed last week's long run, combined with a frustrating morning at work, it was the perfect excuse to get out mid-day.  It was cold and somewhat windy, but not bad.

Overall, I feel pretty good.  It was definitely a long run for me, and I'll take it easier tomorrow based on how I'm feeling.  I had a couple of short walk breaks mixed in, but besides the one stop light I had to stop at, no stopping on the way out.  Goal was just to get the miles in and not worry about the pace.  I tried to keep the HR below 160 which is a pretty manageable level of effort for me.  Without walking, I really never seem to be able to get it much lower than 155 for my runs, even if I'm just shuffling along.  For my "max" of 178 (220-42), I know 160 is probably too high for my "long runs" but that's just how it is for now, I guess.  One day I'll analyze all the HR data I've been collecting over the years...

Feeling OK even after yesterday's longer run.  The running and (most likely) the stretching has helped the soreness I've had along the outside of my right thigh.  It will just hit me with a sometimes sharp, sometimes dull pain somewhere from my hip to my knee.  It's usually worse after I've been sitting all day working, so the last couple days of getting up and out to break up my long days is probably a good thing...plus the extra stretching.

Worked from home again today, so I decided to give the joints a little break and not push a 3-5mi run today.  Biked for 40:00 and worked up a good sweat.  Nothing's hurting, so depending on this storm that's supposed to hit tonight, I'll get in my 3-5mi tomorrow.

Last week:
Another good start, but not a great finish.  Gotta work on that aspect.

Did figure out that what I've thought was a strained right hamstring is probably a nerve irritation.  I'll get in to see the doc this week and see what he says, but from what I've read and a convo with my high school buddy that's a chiropractor, seems to indicate lateral femoral cutaneous nerve irritation.  Despite my stretching (figured it was a sore hamstring), the sharp pain on the outside of my thigh, made worse by sitting all day, is probably a pinched or irritated nerve.  We'll see...

Was only scheduled to do 3mi today, but went a little longer.  Since it was just a short run, did 3 little 1mi or so loops going over the bridge and back to get some "hill" workout in with stairs mixed in.  Don't get excited, nothing extreme or anything y'all would call hard.  Just changing it up a bit without going far.  Legs are a bit tired today, but feeling OK.

I have to do some work for a buddy on Saturday morning, so I may do my long run tomorrow afternoon if work permits.  Fingers crossed.

Well, I was thinking of getting in that 9 miler that I missed last weekend since I had time this afternoon, but reconsidered. I found a nice iPod for my niece on Craigslist and agreed to walk over and meet the person today at noon. First, I didn't remember it being as far as it was (3.3mi roundtrip), and second the 40+ mph wind gusts were crazy!  It wasn't very windy this morning, but it was almost knocking me over.  When I went down to the gym, it was still really windy and I just didn't feel like fighting it today.

Hit the TM, did 3mi or so in 30mins but got bored. Switched to do some intervals.  20 mins of those, 1 min fast walking (rest) and 1 min between 8:00 and 6:50 pace depending on how I felt. Got in 2mi in those 20 mins.

Gorgeous, sunny weather today.  I waited until it hit the high of 39F to go out.  Warm enough for shorts and a long sleeve shirt, but not cold enough for light gloves. Not the long run I was hoping for, but long enough to not feel like I completely failed this week. I've got to get my mileage up or I'm going to be in a tough spot in a few weeks. 9:19AP

Good luck increasing that mileage.

Shorts?! I'm still wearing layers and burning a pair of little hotties every time I get out. My hands freeze up in anything under 45 if I don't wear gloves. Looks like we're racing on the same day in May. Hang in there, you can do it!

FG! Thanks for the positive words. I didn't realize I was the first since Burt usually beats everyone to it. :-) I'm still around. Had some setbacks over the last year or two, but I'm still working to get back. Just trying to keep it real and not push myself too much too fast.

Trap - I'm miserable if my hands get cold, and this run was on the verge. I have some black, thin cotton "womens gloves" as my wife calls them, but they're just enough on the days when I'm debating whether or not I need them. Better to keep them tucked in the waistband then suffer through a run without them.

Steve - Yep, I'm hanging in there. Not doing as much as I'd really like to or need to, but making progress. My plan for the marathon is just to get to the start line without injury. Whatever my level of preparation or fitness at that point will be what it is. I'm quite certain I'll be able to run the first half, and hopefully more. I'll decide during the race if I run/walk the rest or take a DNF if I'm feeling at risk of injury. This is the race I'm currently training for, but there are other 5-10ks I'm more interested in seeing how I do in later this year. I didn't really give myself the time to get fully ready for this, so I'm not anticipating a great time. At this point, I figure if I come in somewhere around 5:00-5:15 (12:00 AP) I'd be happy with it. I know I'll easily improve on that over the next year, so injury free is going to be the key. Keep up the great work on your end to! I'm still looking at the fall marathon out your way. :-)

Last week:
On a positive note, I did get my run in on Saturday, but not the distance I really needed to cover.  I suppose I could say I'm building my base consistently the last few weeks, but at this rate, it's not going to get me to the start line of the full in May.

The Just a Short Run Half is this weekend and I didn't sign up for it since I wasn't seeing my long runs happening to feel confident in running it.  No sense in doing it if I was just bound to get hurt or throw my training off.  So, I'll still shoot for a 10-13mi long run on Saturday, just not in a race.

You can do it. My first long run in this training cycle was supposed to be only 10 miles and I did 13 kind of by accident. It does help if you have a running buddy to keep you distracted though. I am very grateful for my friend Preston! Just focus on the distance and don't worry about the pace. Make it happen!

I'm not doing a great job of posting every day, but I am mindful that I'm not.

Work is just killing me right now. I get up early to get my son off to school, then I'm on a bus to work (30 mins...not long), sit on conference calls and meetings all day, trying to get my real work done between 7am and 5-6pm, then bus back home.

I really enjoy running in the evenings/late at night since I'm more night owl then early bird, but with the cold weather and after a long day, it's really hard to get psyched up to go out when the family wants to hang out.

There's no way I'm getting up any earlier than I do to run before work.  I know some folks can do the 4am run, but I'm not one of them.  It used to be that I'd have 1-1.5 hours sometime during my workday to get down to the gym, but long gone are those days.  Even if I do find an hour, to get a solid distance run in, properly stretch, shower and get back to my desk,  it takes a good 1-1.5 hrs.  Plus, I refuse to go to the gym between 11:30-1pm since everyone is down there.  So even if I run outside, it still takes time waiting for a shower, crowded locker room, etc.  Lately, I've been running at the gym after work, around 5pm.  But then that puts me home around 7-7:30pm and that's just late for the family.

So, I'm working to make it happen, but trying to balance a never ending work to-do list, get more than 5 hours of sleep, keep the family happy is tough stuff.  I have no idea how I would ever be able to do a 100 mi week. I don't expect to kill this first marathon, but I'd like to think I could be ready to at least run a good portion of it.  Work/life just isn't very accommodating right now, I suppose.

Time is my biggest challenge too. I'm pretty sure I could do a sub 3 if I was a lonely old single dude or if I didn't like spending time with my family so much :)

I'll bet I could be too. When I retire at 75, a sub 3 will be my goal. :-)

No run today, but thanks to RT for his positive post on my blog, I couldn't go to bed without doing something.  So, I hit the recumbent bike for an hour. HR stayed about 120-130, RPMs kept 85-95. Was glad to get a workout in, but since it was almost midnight, I couldn't get to sleep until about 1:30am.  :-)

Last week:
I dunno...life isn't being kind to me. If I have any chance of getting in the miles I may just have to become a 4am runner. 0 miles last week is pathetic. I'm one month from the Pittsburgh Marathon and I doubt I could string together more than a 10k without walking. Adding 20 on to that seems impossible. We shall see...

This week (30mi total):

No run, but got in 75 mins on the recumbent bike - level 7 (HR 135-150). Burned enough calories to make it worth it.  Tomorrow, I'll have to get in a run.  I'm really dreading that 4am alarm clock though since it's just shy of midnight right now.  I'll be honest and say I'll probably hit the snooze.

But, got my taxes sent in and helped my daughter file her first.  I paid through the nose, she got a nice refund.  Couldn't have happened to a nicer young woman.  Besides, she's my favorite daughter, so she deserves it. :-)

Debated going out so late, but headed out anyways.  Great night, gorgeous weather. Run went OK, but without a lot of sleep I've been feeling run down.  Plus, the season changes always bring some extra allergy issues.

Forgot my HR strap, so just ran by feel.  Nothing fast, and a few 30-45 sec walks mixed in.  Not sure what I'm going to do about the marathon in two weeks.  Definitely not strong/fit enough to race it, and the half would be questionable, too.  I'll see how this week goes.

You should try run/walking the Marathon since you're already registered. Run 4 minutes/walk 1 minute, repeat until finished.

Today finished a fantastic 7 days of complete rest and relaxation!  Took a week off work and took the family to Massanutten.  Had a great time and came back with only one regret...that I didn't get up to the ridge to run it.  No viable excuses since I had brought everything and time to have done it...I just didn't.

Excellent trip, tons of fun, and I ate like crazy...Just what I've needed for quite a while now!

Took a nice fast walk/run with Zayne on his bike down to the convention center to pick up my race packet for tomorrow and get whatever freebies he could.

Tough decision tonight whether to run at all tomorrow.  I'm looking at the course map and seeing if there's a good place to gracefully exit somewhere along the course. I know I'll never make the full distance, so I'm thinking maybe just using it as a long training run and not caring about time or pace.  Just enjoy the experience for as long as I want it to last then bail from the course as close to the car as possible so I can head home and take a nap.

Well, I'm logging this as a race report even though it wasn't much of one and was a DNF, but the weather was gorgeous (mid 50s) so I felt foolish not to get out and enjoy it.

I decided last night that despite my lack of training, I'd at least show up at the start line and run as long as I felt good enough to run.  I had the bib, perfect weather, and needed to get myself kick started again.  I'm familiar with the majority of the course since it goes through a bunch of neighborhoods around downtown that I've run in.  I'd studied the course and had a few places I knew I could hop out and make it back to the car without much trouble.  I had the goal to cross all three rivers before quitting, but that was a stretch goal since it would mean a 9+ mi run which would definitely be a "long run" for me. So, I had the 5mi mark (first relay exchange and very near where I'd park), the 6.2mi mark which was right before the second river (but a pretty good walk back to the car), or the 9.5mi mark (the 2nd relay exchange), then walk/jog across the third bridge with a decent trek back to the car.  I decided to take it as it came.

The race is the biggest I've ever run (approx. 25,000) and it was pretty crazy.  I was placed in the last corral, but I ended up not being able to get over to it and so I just jumped in the fourth.  Race started at 7am so I got up about 5:30, was out the door by 6, parked by 6:15 where I normally park when I walk into work.  Walked the 1.25mi in and only had to stand in the corral for about 20 mins before the race started.  Decided not to jog it in since I knew I'd be standing around waiting anyways so no sense "warming up".  It took about 20 mins before our corral finally got to the starting line and then we were off.

The start was cool, but wasn't real exciting for me since I knew I wasn't going to finish.  I did have some friends that were running both the full and half, so I was excited for them and mentally wished them good luck. The first mile or two were no problem.  I had to stop at a POP just shy of the 2mi mark and lost about 3:00 waiting for that.  Not sure why it took so long when there were only 2 guys in front of me, but oh well.  A lady hopped in behind me and made a comment that the guys line would be quicker. I'd thought so too, but just like at the grocery store, I'd picked the slow line. She thanked me for being quick when it finally got to be my turn. LOL

Headed out and enjoyed the bands, the costumes, gave lots of high fives as I plodded along.  The pace was pretty easy and slow with so many runners around me.  It would have been very frustrating if I had wanted to go faster.  I know for all the speedy folks, it doesn't matter, because they don't have anyone in front of them, but if I had been trying to BQ, I would have been frustrated trying to get around people.  Some places during the course were quite narrow, especially downtown with all the spectators.

I walked a little off and on after 3rd mi, then as I got to the 6mi mark, was walking more. I was almost to the 10k mark and the point of no return if I headed across the second bridge. There really wasn't much of a place to pull off since security was tight, and as I looked across the river, I could see the runners headed back up river so I decided to head across.  I was a bit shocked to see that the course didn't take an immediate left to go back up river, but took a slight right to head through the West End.  Oh boy, this was definitely longer than I had thought. But I couldn't really stop and turn around and walk back to the car at that point.

I continued on, walking more and running less.  All the toes on both feet seemed to be on fire from the ball of my foot out and my feet were definitely getting tired and sore.  I finally made it to the relay exchange, went far enough past it where I could pull off, and called it a day.  Almost 10mi exactly according to the Garmin, and almost 2hrs.  Walked back to the finish line (1.2mi) and sat down on the lawn to watch the big screen of the finishers.  After watching a friend from work finish the marathon, I started back to the car (another 1.5mi).  Loosening up the shoes while sitting there helped, but man they sure hurt!  I was sore and tired, but satisfied I got out there today.  After a little rest and a nice soak in the tub, I'm still sore the day after, but it was worth it.

Didn't notice until this evening that I've gained about 17 lbs since the last time I weighed myself, probably 4 weeks ago!  I was shocked...I guess that's what a lack of physical exercise will do to a guy.  Time to get in shape for a great fall race!

Edit:  Forgot to add the awesome quote I read from the back of some guy's t-shirt.  I was behind him long enough to read it, but I know I won't get it perfect.  It had the author's name and birth/death dates, so I'm thinking it may have been someone he knew, but maybe this is well known and I'm just now discovering it.  Anyways, this is what I remember it as saying:

"Not every run has to be a personal best...you've already won by showing up."

There's something in the middle that I forget now, but you get the point.  Anyways, it made me feel better having made the decision to show up and get in a run knowing I wouldn't be going home with a finisher's medal or anything tangible to show for it.

Did 45:00 on the recumbent bike this evening. "Strength program;" level 10; 14.5mi; 137 AvgHR

This workout was a good one and challenged me a fair bit.  Still somewhat sore from yesterday's run but feeling pretty good.

One thing, though, is that when I'm biking, my toes don't seem to get good circulation.  After about 25-30 mins I can feel them falling asleep some.  After the 45:00, I stand up and I get the tingling feeling in them like they're getting the blood flowing back to them.  On my runs, I'll get that sometimes, and I try to wiggle my toes a little more between steps which kind of helps.  I've also tried different lacing techniques to keep the toe box as open as possible.  Doesn't really help much.  I'm not really sure it's the shoes since on the bike, I barely tie them on at all and it doesn't matter which shoes I use.

Anyways, I'll have to work to figure out what that is.

The light clicked on for me today re: my weight gain, though!  About 3 weeks ago my doc switched one of my medications.  She said that a typical side effect was gaining "a couple of pounds" since it tends to make you more hungry.  But, she said, "since you're a pretty skinny guy anyways you probably won't notice if you gain an extra 2-3 lbs. every 6 months or so."  She said most people take it at bedtime so they sleep through the hours it makes you the most hungry.  I've taken it at night, and hadn't really given it a second thought since I figured with my eating habits (generally good) and exercise, I probably won't gain much at all.

In retrospect, I've noticed I eat more during the day (a lot more all last week on the vacation).  I've noticed my belly had gotten rounder (felt like bloating, though), and a little more "back fat" bouncing around on my runs, but I don't weigh myself very often or consistently, so I didn't have a clue until yesterday and I was shocked to see the numbers!  So, I've got to be more conscious about my eating and make sure I get my exercise in, that's for sure!

Slowly getting back into it. I started a new medication about 7-8 weeks ago which has caused me to gain some weight (made worse by not exercising). Felt good, but had to keep it slow to get the miles in. Had 1min periods of walking in there. But was glad to get out.  I'm not sure if it's the "short-shorts" (2" inseam, I think) I was wearing or if it's just the increased weight (noticed in my waist, booty, and thighs) but I got some chaffing on the inner thighs.  Haven't had a problem with my legs rubbing together, but notice it with this weight gain.  I'm just glad the run wasn't long enough to make the chaffing really bad!  I may have to see if my normal 4" inseam shorts still allow the chaffing, but I may have to adjust my wardrobe to accommodate.

Time to get regular on the blog again...

Wow, barely eeked this one out!  Sleep has been hard to come by the last week or two...restful sleep, that is.  I must have been more exhausted after work than I thought I was.  Walking home from the bus I had a bit of vertigo and not feeling very "stable."

The girls were going to be staying up late to get some last minute scrapbooking done so I decided to go for a short run.  It was a struggle most of the way with a high heart rate (160-168) for the 11:00 - 11:30 pace!  Not sure what was up with that.  Wasn't hot, but was pretty humid.  Got sprinkled on as I finished and an hour later it was downpouring.  Glad I left when I did.

Thought it was slower than that, but based strictly on my HR I would have expected a 7:15...it was definitely high.  Took it pretty easy doing some walking/jogging with some 100m and 200m pickups in there.  Walked about 0.75mi at the end to just cool down and do some thinking.  It was nice to get out even if it was a bit humid.  Here's to a good week back!

Signed up for the Steelers 5k at the end of August.  This 101 class is prepping for The Great Race, so I'll probably shoot to do the 10k like I did last year. Hopefully, the free code will work for the 10k (like last year), instead of just the 5k that it's intended for. :-)

We've been getting some massive rain/thunderstorms coming through. Last night, then tonight about 15 mins after class, the rain starts and is going sideways! Running 101 class:  Jog 90 sec then walk 2mins for 20 mins total (1.61mi).  Wasn't very social today...Wish I could say it was the Pirates double-header with the Cardinals that was distracting me, but it wasn't.  Although they were 1-1 in the first game when we ran close enough that I could see the scoreboard. Took it pretty easy, HR got up to about 160 max which is pretty high for about a 9:00-8:50 pace during the jog portion. Did our stretching then went back to the gym.

Hopped on the treadmill for a few minutes to get a little more mileage in and try to work out some of the soreness.  Did 1min walk; 2min jog @ 10:00 pace on 2% incline.  Nothing real tough, but my HR was getting way up there hitting 170!  I haven't hit the 170's since my Steeler 5k so obviously the body was working hard.  Legs starting feeling a little rubbery towards the end and I didn't even do a mile.

I've got a long way to go...but I'll get there. I'm working hard at staying positive and just taking it easy and building slowly.  I'm just glad I'm coming back since I was close to throwing in the towel on running all together.

The Running 101 class is good for me right now because it forces me to take it easy and not overdo it.  Most everyone in the class is a new runner so there's not a lot of competition to be the fastest in the class.  So it's what I need right now.  I just need to be a better person, be more social and offer any help & encouragement I can to the other runners.

The only thing I can think of worse than having to buy a hot water heater, is having to install one yourself. Definitely could not have been pleasant!

Unexpectedly having to buy a new one isn't pleasant, but installing isn't the worst thing these days. With the Shark Bite connectors, it's a lot less "sweating" copper pipes than I would have normally had to do.

I have a hard time paying someone else to do what I can do my self (and save money doing it...as long as I don't factor in my hourly labor rate).

Nobody ever goes to Home Depot only once for a project. Nice work getting it done in 2 trips :)

Sorry to hear about it. I just did some work in my shower and found the shark bite connectors to be well worth it. Hope that everything is working well now.

Skipped Running 101 class tonight. Not proud of it, but just didn't have it in me.

Took me 45 mins to talk myself out of going out for a run tonight. Last time it didn't take me more than 15 mins, so I think that's improvement...?

How is it that I can be sick for 4 days with a killer sinus infection and have gained so much weight? I guess I should have gotten the stomach flu instead. At least I'm almost back to normal and ready to get a run in this week!

Good luck this week Wes. Now that you are done with being sick, things will get better.

Thanks Steve. That's what I'm hoping for. Feeling better today, so I hope to get to my running class tomorrow evening. It will be nice to get back!

Man...it's been a while since I've run!  I had a DNS for the Gatorade/Steelers 5k which I was bummed about.  Add to that the now 40 lbs I've put on over the last few months, and I just haven't had the motivation to get out there. But when I saw the scale was 204 the other day up from my 165...and with the 5K Great Race in the next 3 weeks, I decided I've got to just get out there today with the Running 101 class.

I'm still not 100% from this sinus infection, plus it was hot and humid! I considered staying with the half of the class in the cooled gym, but I knew I couldn't hack the treadmill today.  So I headed out with the rest to run what was supposed to be a 2.75mi course.  When I took my first running step, a huge wave of excitement came over me and I remembered why I love running!

Granted, that euphoria quickly decreased as I saw my HR rise to 180 while barely holding a 12:00 mile and sweating profusely.  But I'm SO glad I got out and caught the good "running bug" again. My journey to a full marathon next year begins again!  :-)

Super slow, plenty of walking...high HR

Positive:

1)  I got out on a beautiful day for a nice run

2)  Actually looking forward to the 5k Great Race in a little over a week, even knowing I'll probably walk some of it and will be surprised to break 38:00 or so.

3)  I am determined never to let myself get this fat again!

I've decided that 1 run a week is as bad as it gets.  Not much fitness improvement and all the pain and discomfort of that first run back after a long hiatus.  I gotta get up to 2x+/week...this feels like torture.  haha...ouch!

I weigh much more than you.

The only positive thing to being 200+ is I could have competed in the "Linebacker" class for the Gatorade Steelers 5k. Hard to compete with a 16:xx winning time, though.

Yowza!

From baldnspicy on Tue, Sep 24, 2013 at 17:46:20 from 66.87.115.49

Oh man am I off...I'll blame it on dehydration.

It's the Nose Tackle class and winning time was in the low 19's.

LOL!

A run is a run though. You should be glad you got to run!

Oh and I am, Steve! I just wish they didn't all feel like a slow death march. Haha

It will get better. I know it will!

You're out there, which immediately puts you in a different category.

I think I went about 2.2 miles today, half of it jogging at a pretty slow pace. But I'm happy to have made my way to the gym. Time to keep it up.

Good job Wes! Glad to see you at it. I am struggling myself. I am going to try to get this half marathon in this weekend then I will be in repair mode.

Keep up the good work buddy.

Finishing my recovery from a bad knee sprain almost 2 weeks ago, so no miles today.  But just signed up to run the Scranton Half on April 6 with Steve, so another couple days of rest and I should be able to get back to getting a few miles in! I'm excited...just the jumpstart I needed.  Thanks, Steve!
