Sept - Gatorade/Steelers 5k. (Signed up!)
Sept - IKEA Montour Trail Half  (prob not, but leaving it on here)
Sept - The Great Race 10k (My Running 101 goal race)
Nov - Dirt Monster 5mi (Gotta do it again no matter what!)

Long-Term Running Goals:

Finish recovering from my injuries and build mileage.  That is all.

Personal:

My name is Wes, I'm married with two wonderful children. The nickname BaldNSpicy came from the fact that I have been balding for a (long) while now and spicy for my love of very spicy foods (Thai and extremely hot wings are my favorites).  If eating doesn't bring me near tears and leave me sweating, it's not worth eating.  :-)

Oh, and I'm also known for my doorags.

Well, it's been a while but I'm finished with PT after my knee issues and so I hit the gym. With all the snow and ice we've had, I wasn't going to chance a twisted knee or ankle. Plus, I wasn't sure how far this overweight, out of shape body was going to be able to go.

Since I've got a little extra fat, I hopped on the TM and did the "Fat Burner" program for 20:00 after a nice long warmup, then a nice long cool down, stretching and hit the showers.

Kept it super slow and just focused on form and being hyper aware of how everything was feeling. No strains and no pains, so I'm happy about that. I think I'll do some core work tomorrow and rest the legs/knee to make sure it's not going to complain.

Next race is the Scranton Half in mid-April, so I'll work towards that, but with basically 2 months to get back in shape, I'll be focusing on getting stronger and just enjoying the race!

Very glad to be back!

Thanks Steve. I think it will start coming together pretty well now. Just need to stay realistic and not try to do too much too soon.

Welcome back!

Let's hope the injury issues are behind you for good. Say hi to Michael and the rest of the Office gang for me in Scranton.

A bit of frustration the last couple of days as my knee flared up some again. I got to the gym today since it was feeling a bit better. Endurance/fitness is way off, but that will come back quickly, I hope. The knee was a little sore so I'll ice it some tonight and hope for the best tomorrow. :-)

Glad to see you were able to get back for a quick run. Icing has been very helpful for me lately. Have you tried stretching your quads to help loosen the muscles around your knee? Again, glad to see you getting in some miles!

I decided to give in after a few weeks of RICE and PT exercises to do what I should have done weeks ago and got an appt with the orthopedist for my knee. Got in next week so I'll see what she says and what the xrays and/or MRI say. Hopefully it will narrow down what this annoying pain is. I hope to be back soon. All this laying around eating bon bons isn't helping me lose this weight. haha

Praying for some good news. I really hope things go well for you. Miss seeing your posts and hope you can get back to normal so we can run a race together soon!

Met with the orthopedist today to review last Thursday's MRI.  It confirmed a torn meniscus, and also showed some bone edema(?) and microfractures made worse by the tear.

So, April 9 I go under the knife to remove the torn meniscus (repair is likely not an option) and get a small hole bored into my femur where they'll inject some type of calcium & other stuff that is supposed to harden and repair the edema.  Supposedly, there's only a handful of places in the US that do this procedure...which means I'll be a lucky one to pay big bucks to have it done.

Good news is I should be back running in 4-6 weeks but am told that I may have to focus more on cross training going forward and not plan on running 6 days a week.

BNS will once again make a return...!

Enjoyed a fantastic week vacation out in NM and Utah doing some moving, sightseeing, etc. Although I haven't been very active in the last several months, I definitely packed on the weight while I was out there. I figured I had gained a couple, but this is more than a couple and way more than I've ever weighed in my life. A little depressing, but I had my pre-op bloodwork and physical today and everything looks good so as long as the bloodwork comes back in time, I'll get my knee fixed next Wednesday.  Then just a 4-6 weeks of rehab and I should be back running again. I can't wait!!

First post-op check up. Pain has started to go away, but I've still got a long way to go before I'm running or even cross training. Knee was still really swollen so the doc drained it which helped with the mobility some but it's still quite painful especially on the stairs.

So I'm trying to take it easy and RICE more than I have been.
