Running Accomplishments:

In late 2008 I decided I needed to get in better shape and started running again.  I ran my first formal road race ever, a half marathon, in late 2009.

(unofficial) Track 1 Mile - 7:32 (4/24/2010)  6:56 (9/27/2010)

5k - 27:31 - Riverview Run on 06/11/2010
22:39 - Gatorade Steelers 5k on 09/04/2010

10k - 50:43 - Riverside Run on 04/10/2010

Half - 2:02:58 - Just a Short Run on 03/27/2010
1:51:47 - IKEA Montour Trail Half on 09/11/2010

Short-Term Running Goals:

2011 Races:

Sept 25 - The Great Race 10k (59:15)
Nov 5 - Dirt Monster 5mi (52:59)

2012 Races:

June 8 - Riverside 5k  (27:49)
Sept 2 - Gatorade Steelers 5k (route) with Steve!  (27:39)
Sept 30 - The Great Race 10k (route)  (53:48)
Nov 3 - The Dirt Monster 5mi (52:55)

2013 Races:

May - Pittsburgh Marathon (started, but DNF about the half way point)
June - Riverview 5k  - Bummed I missed signing up for this one. It's one of my favorites!
Sept - Gatorade/Steelers 5k. (Signed up!)
Sept - IKEA Montour Trail Half  (prob not, but leaving it on here)
Sept - The Great Race 10k (My Running 101 goal race)
Nov - Dirt Monster 5mi (Gotta do it again no matter what!)

Long-Term Running Goals:

Finish recovering from my injuries and build mileage.  That is all.

Personal:

My name is Wes, I'm married with two wonderful children. The nickname BaldNSpicy came from the fact that I have been balding for a (long) while now and spicy for my love of very spicy foods (Thai and extremely hot wings are my favorites).  If eating doesn't bring me near tears and leave me sweating, it's not worth eating.  :-)

Oh, and I'm also known for my doorags.

Well, it looks like I might actually be back on the roads in a couple of weeks so I figured it was time I got back to blogging. I've been through a lot getting this foot fixed up but it's finally starting to feel better. It's going to take some time to come back since I haven't been doing anything to maintain.

I'll be taking it super easy to build myself back up to something that slightly resembles a runner. No goals at this point until I see how things go.

Dude! You were gone so long that Burt changed the meaning of BNS to "bleeding nipple syndrome!"

Welcome back, are you healed up yet?

From baldnspicy on Wed, Apr 27, 2011 at 20:44:27 from 72.77.78.188

Yes, I know Burt has been speaking ill of the handicapped. He's just lucky I don't live near him. My kids will attest that my "transformer" boot can deliver a nasty pain when provoked. Nope, not healed yet. It's only been 5+ months so I think my expectations are just unrealistic. LOL!! Seriously, I'be been in a boot the last 10 weeks trying to get a stress fracture to heal. Its getting better very slowly and so I'm still not cleared to do any major walking, let alone running yet. I've just been packing on the weight, working a crazy number of hours and trying to keep myself sane. I'd have an incredible core if I had just worked on it since the foot problems started last year. There's always tomorrow... :-)

From seeaprilrun on Wed, Apr 27, 2011 at 21:05:48 from 174.70.177.86

Wow. I didn't realize you had a stress fracture...metatarsal? 5 months? Oh...ouch. That stinks. Why is it taking so long? I hope you are done with it soon and can get back at it!

From baldnspicy on Wed, Apr 27, 2011 at 21:58:10 from 72.77.78.188

Hi April. My problems started about 6-7 months ago with what I thought was my normal neuroma problems, but after several months of injections and PT, I was still hurting. An MRI later showed the neuromas were gone, but their pain had been masking the stress fracture. It's in my 3rd metatarsal, near the toe joint. I'm not positive why it's taking so long, but next Tuesday I hope to get some good news that it's actually improving. I'm still a few more weeks from going bootless all day, though. It's been terribly frustrating and has left me depressed, but one day I'll be running again. :-)

From seeaprilrun on Thu, Apr 28, 2011 at 16:16:30 from 174.70.177.86

That really stinks. I am slowly beginning to run again after bilateral tibial stress fractures. I think I was a little luckier than you though..I ran in pain for about 3 weeks and then they were diagnosed with a bone scan. 5 weeks in the pool and x-ray shows good periosteal thickening at the sites, and I was given the green light to start carefully easing back into it.

Spicy .. be careful with that foot. Dean has been out for over 1.5 years (yes, you read that right) - after a couple of stress fractures he ended up having something more serious. He is recovering now from surgery, and we are still not sure he will ever run again. It is definitely worth taking the down time and making sure you are healed. But 5 months sounds like an awful long time. Keep up the spirits!! you are still a runner!

I checked today to look for another entry. I hope you didn't just come out of hiding for one measly day.

From baldnspicy on Tue, May 03, 2011 at 01:32:51 from 72.95.164.253

Thanks Bonnie, your comment that I'm still a runner meant a lot since I've been wondering if I'll ever actually get back to it, so thank you!

April - I'm still here, but when I don't have anything to report, I just don't have any reason to post! I've got to get back into it though, so I'm going to keep posting as often as I can. I hope to get back to some core & weight work so I'll be ready in a few weeks when I'm out of purgatory.

I saw my race shirt from the Riverview Run in mid June the other day, so I've made that my goal for my post injury debut. I hope to be able to do a 5k by then!

Hey BNS, I saw you had made a comment on SlowJoe's blog and figured you must be back. Really sorry to hear about your injury woes and miss your humor. Hope you can find reasons to post even if you aren't posting miles. Stay strong.

Hey, Flat! Thanks, I hope the doc will be able to tell me something positive today so I can get back to running soon. I'll be around - I've been reading race reports off and on for the last few months, just not posting. You had quite the marathon race on New Years, by the way. Congrats!

Just working from home today to try and rest this (stupid) stress fracture.  I'm way overwhelmed with work and have been for a while. It hit me that I have no muscle strength and am all flabby again.  I've got to hit the core work and some biking starting tomorrow!

I see the Orthopedist tomorrow so I hope to get some good news.  It's feeling better, but not quite there.  My running shoes definitely need to be replaced, especially the right one (I've been wearing the boot on my left foot.  Anyone need a semi-used left NB 758 shoe?  :-)

Thanks guys, I know it will get worked out, it's just a matter of how long it takes. I'd really like to get in the Riverview 5k since I think I'll have time to get in OK shape by then. If not, I'll find another one, but I like that one since it's right around the corner from me.

I'll let you know how it goes today.

Well, on Saturday it was raining and I had to "run" out to the shed (hence the 0.01mi "fast miles").  The foot felt pretty good, but I thought, "why am I winded."  LOL

A week of walking to work (3 mi total) should get my feet back to the strength to where I could try a slow mile on the treadmill. I might just make the Riverview 5k in June!!

Walking this week, then a little jogging next. Thanks to Joe, I will remember to be sensible and not start out too fast or too long. I'm concerned about tomorrow. If I do another .01, I will have doubled my mileage this week. That can't be good, right?

Thanks for liking me, Mike. You're a good guy. :-)

As I sit here eating cookies dipped in milk, I can't help but notice the spare tire around my waist.  The long hours at work, the steadily declining quality of my diet since the New Year, and almost no cardio for months seem like the logical reason.  But not everything is logical.  I continue to look for answers.

Hey!!  What's that writing at the bottom of the Oreo box?  Could it be my answer??  Nope, just a coupon enticing me to buy more... Shucks

...10 cookies later...

On an unrelated note, I was looking for my "toilet" picture in our archives to go with Trap's picture.  I didn't find it, but I *DID* find my first mug shot from 2001.  Fairfax county jail had nice backdrops, nice polo shirts, and let us keep our rings, but they made us write our own placards.

What's up with that??

After a long day, I had to get up from the desk and do something before finishing the last couple of hours of work.  I vaguely remembered where I put my gym bag.  I found it under a pile of dust, looked inside to find the clothes I put there months ago, and headed down to the gym.  I only had about 45 mins before they closed so I hopped on the treadmill to just do some walking, but after .3mi, it was time to try some "running."  Looks like I'm back to being "fast" again...

I cranked it up to 10:00 pace and struggled through a full mile!  Woo hoo!  Another .2mi walking to cool down, some stretching, a shower, and I was back at the desk.

I had to stop and watch them put the banner on the bridge.

You have to park a mile and a half away from work!? I live closer than that to my office. How's that foot doing?

From baldnspicy on Wed, May 25, 2011 at 18:48:02 from 72.77.76.85

You guys are too much! I don't HAVE to park that far, I just do. We have parking under our building and in several parking structures around work. We also have parking across the river at the stadium. I'm just too cheap to park down there.

So...I park on a city street north of the city then walk or bike in from there. It's through a nice little park with a pond named "Lake Elizabeth" - seriously - and then across the bridge. It's a great walk except when there's a storm or snow/ice/sleet.

I figure I can either pay $200/mo to park in our building, $120+/mo for nearby parking, $100/mo to park at the stadium or free and get some exercise. That's a lot of shoes and race fees per year! :-)

...or one stress fracture...

OK, so I have not been a good friendly blogger lately. Life is busy, and you know how that is when you do not get any sleep? It makes those last waking hours miserable, and the last thing I want to do is blog.

Anyway, what happened????? Is the same injury from long time back, or a new one?

From flatlander on Fri, May 27, 2011 at 09:46:21 from 76.31.26.153

Wes, hope you are OK?

From baldnspicy on Mon, May 30, 2011 at 12:23:06 from 72.77.106.133

Flat, thanks, I'm hanging in there! Just crazy busy with work and family "stuff."

Kelli, no worries, and please don't feel bad about anything! I'm a terrible blogger. I'm lucky to get the time to blog the little that I do get in to just log my workouts, let alone read/comment on everyone's blogs. Usually, I get a few minutes to head over to some blogs, read their latest entry or two, comment on one and move on. It's really sad since I can't keep up with everyone's progress, successes, injuries, etc. I do try to read the race reports when I have a few minutes, though. Your ultras are crazy - in a good way, by the way!! I'm seriously impressed!!

Here's the short of it:

I had a stress fracture in my foot that was masked by my previous neuroma problems. I had gone to my Podiatrist with pain again, but it felt different and was a different type of pain than the neuromas of the past. She treated it with the cortizone shots and new orthotics since she couldn't determine there was anything else wrong, but it didn't help after 3 rounds of shots. I still wasn't able to run a step! She said that the cortizone loses it's effectiveness after so many treatments and I had probably hit the limit that my body would benefit from them. I waited a few more weeks then I decided to go to an Orthopedist who is a very accomplished runner so I knew she'd understand.

She suggested the next step - alcohol based injections that would kill/shrivel up the neuroma and hopefully solve the neuroma problem from coming back. The side effect is some numbness in the toes the nerves fed. After 3 months (5 series of shots, two+ weeks apart with weekly PT) and little to no improvement, she suggested surgery. I insisted on an MRI (which I guess was part of the pre-surgery process, anyways) since my Internet research told me it should have been fixed and feeling a ton better with 2-3 shots. I also wanted to be 100% sure it was the neuromas that were causing the pain since the surgery has potential long term, even worse side effects with at least a 8+ week recovery time.

The MRI showed a stress fracture in the same general location as the neromas - hence the similar but different pain I was feeling. The shots did what they were supposed to, which I was happy about. Long story short (I know, I said this was the short of it, but you know me), no surgery but 11 weeks in a boot and I'm able to do a little running now. Woo Hoo!

Here's to the second half of 2011! :-)

Now for the long of it (don't feel committed to reading the rest...):

The three months while I was supposed to be getting better, I was depressed about not feeling any improvement when I was doing everything I was supposed to. My wife had been in a boot for a foot problem a couple years ago and wore it for maybe 2 (off and on) of the 8 weeks she was supposed to. After about a week of wearing it every waking hour, she says, "wow, you're really serious about wearing that boot!" My response was, "I'm really serious about running again!" Of course, I got all the comments when I told people it was a stress fracture, they'd ask how I did it, I'd say probably from running. Several people said, "See, that's why I don't exercise/run." I'd just give them a look and walk away. Shesh.

It was painful to walk so I wasn't doing much at all physical, plus the weather was cold and snowy. If I was smart, which I obviously wasn't, I'd have been working on my core, general strength & stretching, and keeping up some type of cardio. Spinning/biking wasn't really an option for that, though, since it was still too much pressure on the foot.

I didn't blog during those 5+ months since I didn't have anything to write home about and just didn't have the time. Not until the last two weeks in the boot did it even start feeling better at all. I seriously considered just dropping the boot a couple weeks before that and resolving myself I wouldn't be running again. I was tired of the boot. I hated that thing!

I've been out of the boot now for a couple of weeks and I've been seriously racking up the miles, lol. It's getting better and I may try to run a 5k on June 11 (Riverview 5k) just to do a race again. It's a fairly tough 5k, but I ran it last year - part of it with my daughter for her first 5k - and it's in my neighborhood so I really want to do it. I'd be happy to go sub 30 at this point (it's a flat .75mi, then up a small hill, around the observatory, back down, then down about a mile, then it's a mile of uphill to the finish) but finishing it without walking would be awesome. LOL I ran it in 27:31 last year but I stayed with my daughter for the first .5 mile or so at about a 13:00 pace. I think a 25:00 or faster would have been possible.

I've lost a lot of strength and endurance with these months off and gaining 7-8 lbs, but I know it will slowly come back. I can't say what the root cause of the stress fracture was, but I'm going to take it easy and build slowly. I had really wanted to do my first marathon this year with Steve, but after getting hurt it will have to wait until next year. I hope to be up to doing the IKEA Half in the fall, but I'm just going to see how it goes. Normally, I register early to commit myself to the races I do, but this year I may just wait until it gets closer and pay the extra fees.

I don't expect any PRs this year, but if I can get the strength back up and some endurance, I'll be pleased knowing I'm going into next year. Then the goal is just injury free running so I can manage my stress levels and enjoy life again! Spinning is fine, but it's not the same for me.

And now the even longer of it (sorry to those that have hung in here this long):

At the same time all this was going on, we had a "voluntary resignation program" (VRP) at work that was designed to give some incentive to reduce our head count by giving some incentive to voluntarily leave the company by offering an extra week (3 weeks vs 2 if laid off) of pay for every year you had been there before they started laying people off. They offered it to about 400 of the approx. 2,000 IT staff with the goal of eliminating 150+ positions in this first round. They'd then do 2 more rounds, targeting other areas in IT.

I've been there for "only" 5 years, and while not offered the VRP in this round, would have in the third based on how they laid it out. I would have taken my chances since looking for a job in exchange for an extra month of pay wasn't that attractive in this job market. But for over 65% of our company's employees that have been here for over 10+ years, it was very attractive.

You can imagine what happens when you're offered the VRP and you have 15 or 20 years there and by being offered the VRP, you assume your job is in jeopardy. Do you take your chances and lose those extra weeks of pay or take it? To make it worse, the VRP process wasn't transparent at all. If you wanted to be considered for it, you had to fill out an "application" and submit it by a certain date. You could retract it before that date, but once the day came, you were committed. The VRP option was seen as an "employee benefit" since only if you had had good reviews would they let you take it. If you were sub-par, they would deny your application and you'd likely be let go involuntarily sometime afterwards. They wouldn't say how many of those 400 people applied for it, who applied for it, who was denied, or even who they accepted - not even our manager or division manager knew except what their employees had told them!

Of course, there was enough talk/gossip that you knew who in your department/division put in for it, and heard through the grapevine of others. I knew some who were waiting to apply based on who in their department had put in figuring that if someone with similar responsibilities put in for it, that you had a better chance of not being laid off. Even afterwards, they didn't publicize in any way who was leaving, but they were "kind" enough to stagger the roll-off dates for those leaving between 1-3 months out. (rolling my eyes)

Well, they had enough people voluntarily apply to take it that they didn't have to lay anyone off, but that meant that lots of people with a lot of years in the industry left. My boss had been there 36 years and took it - he had tried to retire with his wife (she had 30+ years) the year before but was denied due to a reorganization combining his dept and ours. He's now enjoying retired life while being paid for a year from the VRP while collecting his pension. Their pension program was unbelievably awesome, along with a half way decent 401k matching program. I don't blame my boss for taking it in the least. If I were in his position I wouldn't have even hesitated. He told me later that he had the application filled out and submitted before the end of the day - they announced it at 4pm that day, so he was a little anxious. LOL

For some strange reason, the company hasn't followed through with the next two rounds that were supposed to start this last February. Gee, I wonder why.

About a year ago, the company announced that they weren't continuing with their pension program and only if you had 5 years with the company by June 1, 2011 would you keep those pension benefits. If not, somehow what you had "earned" by that time would be rolled into some other retirement program. Well, my 5 year anniversary was 5/15/2011 so I missed it by days - but I haven't cared enough yet to figure out where those benefits were put. Oh well, such is life. I was surprised they even had a pension program after I had been hired since pensions are so rare these days. I figured they'd have to get rid of it at some point anyways.

Most everyone I knew that took and subsequently got the VRP, were very happy about their decision. None have regretted it probably because another major employer in town has snatched up a good portion of those that left.

One really sad case, though. There was a woman who assumed that since she was offered the VRP that her job was in jeopardy and so she put in for it just in case and got it. They offered the VRP based on job titles or departments that needed to be trimmed down. Her boss had been offered it since he was a division manager of a department that we knew would be eliminated or maybe rolled under another one. She was offered it since she was his assistant, not because they would let her go if he took the VRP. She was an incredible assistant (I had worked with her a fair amount since I worked with her boss) and she figured that they wouldn't let her go, but she had been there 12 years and if she was going to be let go she didn't want to miss out on the extra weeks of pay. Since they accepted almost every application, she got the notice that she would be leaving and was absolutely hysterical - to the point they had to escort her out of the building!

I only knew of 2 people that had their applications denied. There were two departments, that I know of, that had all or all but one person put in for it. The one where everyone put in for it one person was denied since they had to keep one admin around. He was the one with the least number of years at the company, but also wasn't the most experienced. But since it was seen as a benefit, they awarded it to the more senior people.

Us poor souls left at the company are having to pick up the slack and 9 months later, we're now seeing several people resign because of the work load and a lot of the knowledge base had left. It doesn't help that a lot of those that left during the VRP have been recruiting people away to their new companies either.

Anyways, it's crazy since everyone in our department that was offered the VRP took it and it cut us from about 18 to 10. So I've been putting in an incredible number of hours to just keep my head above water and it's not going to get any better. Normally, my busy time of the year is the last 3 months of the year but it has only gotten more busy as the year has gone on with no end in sight.

So what used to be hour to go for a short run sometime during the day to clear my head and get away from the desk is replaced by meetings - even the "sacred" Noon-1pm slot that everyone would usually avoid scheduling during is being filled since that's the only time anyone is available anymore. Or I use it to catch up and try to stay on top of things. Then I stay late/start early to get some quiet time to get caught up or get ready for the next day.

Here it is Memorial Day and I woke up at 7:30am and couldn't go back to sleep knowing I have several hours of work I needed to do this weekend that I haven't done yet. Plus, I knew the family would be sleeping in until late anyways. But instead, I'm avoiding work and blogging! :-) This is a welcome distraction even if no one even reads to the end of this. Ha Ha! It's been therapeutic.

Oh well, I have 15 more minutes of blogging time then it's time to get cracking on my work!

Happy running everyone and Happy Memorial Day! :-)

I know I'm truly blessed to have my job and would rather be working a ton of hours and getting paid for it than working a ton of hours looking for a job.

Now that my feet are improving, I'm looking forward to having an excuse to now book my runs on my calendar and get my "me" time in. Just my luck that we're in a record heat wave right now... :-)

Thanks for the support! I appreciate it!

Yep, she's a Nanday Conure. One day if it's ever worth $150 to know for sure if Clem is a he or a she, I'll confirm whether "its" name is Clemente or Clementine. As far as we're concerned, Clem is a she until further notice. :-)

She likes her pretzels but has a hard time eating them after her accident a few months ago where her top beak broke off from slamming into the window when she was startled by my son dropping a lap desk on the floor. Did I post a picture? Maybe not. I'll put one up for today's post since I did nothing...yet.

No, Burt. No gluing, although I've saved it just in case. I think it was $200 or so for a prosthetic that won't necessarily stay on very well. They have to be refitted every so often. She's doing pretty good without it so we'll see how it goes. She just has beak envy when she sees another parrot.

Biked the 3 miles round trip from where I park to work.  I picked the hottest time of the day to go to the gym.  It's been over a week since I've ran so I had to venture outside despite the 92 degree weather and high humidity.  I only had an hour between meetings so I had to hurry down.  The 1.9mi was plenty...guess I'm not ready for the 5k on Friday night.  Not a biggie, but it would have been nice.  My legs were pretty jello-ish after the run and the biking.  I think I need to get some strength built back up.

Friday evening was the Riverview 5k that I had really wanted to run but I passed since I had struggled last week with just running 2mi and feeling OK.  I'm kinda glad I did since the course is basically just a big downhill and a big uphill which would have put too much pressure on the foot.  I was still disappointed.

So about 5 to midnight tonight, I decided to start the week off right and get a run in.  I only had my old shoes which are definitely well beyond their effectiveness, but I had my less worn shoes at work.  I headed out and slowly climbed the 1/2 mi hill to begin my run.  Not too bad, about a 12:00 pace.  Kept going and after about a mile I decided since this 59o weather felt so nice and my foot was doing fine that I was going to get my 5k in.  I kept thinking I'd run the 5k then I'd walk back with a little jog here and there if I could muster it.

I did the 3.12mi in just under 30:00 which isn't too bad.  I didn't feel like I was pushing it at all, focused mostly on the feet.  Not much soreness, so I was pretty happy.  Definitely some fatigue, but I was feeling better than last week.

I walked back about .6mi and started getting chilled so I needed to jog so I jogged most of the way back with a little walk here and there.  I even got a couple 1/4mi sub-8:00 pace "sprints" in.  Felt good to be able to pick it up some.

I'll take the next day or two off to keep the recovery going, but this was a positive run.  It's starting to come back a little.  :-)

Steve - Yep, it's a big week so far. ;-) We'll see if I can keep it up!

Thanks Mattrow - it really is tough. At times I wish I could snap my fingers and I'd be back to where I was before, running like the wind!

...but then I wouldn't realize the blessing it is to be able to run and feel the hot, humid, sticky wind in my face, the burning sensation of fatigued muscles, the day-after soreness, the weird tan lines, etc. But most importantly, getting to earn the "bandaids of honor" from BNS all over again. I mean, who would want to miss all of that??

Whew, after a week of scout camp last week and trying to catch up on work, it took my son's insistence that we go to the track so he could ride his bike while I jogged.  It was approaching dark and there were only two other ladies walking the track, but that was enough for one of them to chew out my son for riding his bike on the "outside" track which is just the asphalt around the "inner" (real) track.  She promptly left after finishing the last 200m of her walk.  Some people.

The jog wasn't too bad but I was struggling.  I've added a few pounds that I now need to lose in my quest to becoming "fast" again.  Felt good to get back out and the track was a great place to kick it into gear again.

With all the mileage this week, I figured I'd check the Boston Speed Predictor.  Here's what it said:

The slowest you can run and still qualify for the Boston Marathon is 3:20:59. This is a 7:39 per mile pace. If you train at 5 miles per week, you need to run a 5 K in 17:40 which is 5:41 per mile pace.

Just about there... ;-)

Good to see you back at it. I guess the philosophy behind that quote is that if you log big miles you can sustain a somewhat faster pace so you don't need to necessarily be fast at shorter distances? I have seen it before, just never really understood it.

From rAtTLeTrAp on Fri, Jul 15, 2011 at 15:39:47 from 24.22.239.183

From baldnspicy on Sat, Jul 16, 2011 at 23:00:14 from 72.77.76.40

If a 17:40 sounds painful, all I need to do is get up to 150 miles per week:

The slowest you can run and still qualify for the Boston Marathon is 3:20:59. This is a 7:39 per mile pace. If you train at 150 miles per week, you need to run a 5 K in 21:24 which is 6:53 per mile pace.

From flatlander on Sun, Jul 17, 2011 at 00:26:29 from 198.207.244.102

OK, I think I have this figured out. The theory is that the more miles you log, the longer you can sustain a higher heart rate, meaning that even if you don't have a blazing fast 5K time, you don't have to add as many seconds per mile to your 5K pace in order to get to a sustainable marathon pace.

Trap - my wife freaked out the first time back when he was 5 I think, too. She got over it. I get that not everyone thinks of their hair like I do, but it grows back eventually (for some people).

Burt - that's a KILLER mohawk! I can only imagine him passing the sacrament!

Joe - happy belated b-day to your daughter! Thanks for the encouragement - I'm getting there. Life gets in the way too much for me...but I'm working to keep it in check.

My running buddy, Jake, bugged me enough that I finally caved and agreed to a lunchtime run.  I warmed up on the treadmill for about 0.5mi then we jogged at about a 10:15 pace for the other 2.7mi.  It felt good, but is still harder than I wish it was.  It was conversational for both of us which is nice but my legs felt beat...but a nice beat.  :-)

Tonight was painful, feeling totally fatigued and weak, but I got out.

I thought my investment in my RoadID was going to pay off.  My wife knows the rule - if she gets the call I've collapsed, the first thing she tells the caller is to stop my Garmin!

Gotta thank my son for putting the pressure on me to get out to the track tonight.  He's thinking he wants to do a triathalon at some point in the near future.  He doesn't understand the work he'll have to do, but if it gets him out and running, biking, etc. then I'm all for it.  He wants to run a marathon with his dad.  With some training he'll be able to do it, it will be a matter of him having the discipline to actually put in the work for the long term.  I hope he sticks with it!

The miles are coming slowly, but this week's focus is on consistency - getting out of the office every day to do something.  3 days will be running around 3+mi then a couple days of strength training in between.  After last Wednesday's run I had some pain in the muscles on the outside of my lower legs for a couple of days.  This happened when I started running a couple years ago, so I just have to stretch them better during and after the run.  This morning, they're feeling fine, so I think I avoided it this time.  Stretching is the key for me to keep from being sore so I make sure I leave myself time to do it.  Getting old stinks.

Avg. pace for this run was right at 9:00.  The first 1-1.5 mi was a bit below that and the last half was above it.  My goal was to keep it as close to 9:00 throughout the run but I slowed down some as the laps clicked off.  I've never hit my "max HR" of 180 (220-40) but last Wed I hit 178.  This run I was hitting mid 160s at the 9:00 pace.  I wanted to see what my HR would be on a consistent track pace.  I've lost a lot of cardio/strength/fitness since a 9:00 pace wouldn't have pushed me that high before my injuries.  This pace will be my benchmark for the next while to see my progress as I get stronger and get the cardio back.  That pace for me should be a nice recovery type pace but last night it was fairly difficult during those last few laps.

I did have a "fun" lap when I saw a couple running in the #1 lane (shame on them!) doing what it appeared were about 7:30 pace.  I was in lane 6 but when they past me one time, I decided to try and hang on as long as I could.  That lasted about 3/4 of a mile and was about a 7:20 pace.  It felt good to stretch the stride out some and go faster, but I died out pretty quick.  They were both obviously accomplished runners - didn't seem labored at all at that pace, very fluid motions/stride, etc.  I still feel very awkward in my stride but this longer stride and pace felt much more natural/familiar to me.  I just need to put the miles in and keep working and I'll be back to feeling that again.  A bit frustrating, but I feel the changes happening slowly so that keeps me coming back for more.  :-)

They moved my Steeler 5k to a Sunday and so I may pass - not sure I'm ready to race yet anyways despite it being a very flat 5k.  Plus, since my employer is the sponsor for The Great Race (and I get in free) I'm thinking about doing it.  I've always avoided racing on Sunday so I've never run this one, but I may have to justify it this year since it does benefit a good cause and my training has been less than optimal - oh, and it's free.  I need a goal race to work toward so I don't make excuses.  Besides, if I get someone upset at me for being late for a meeting because the showers were full I should get a free pass since I was training for The Great Race, right?  :-)

They've got a 5k and a 10k.  It's a somewhat aided course since it's a net negative elevation (that's the definition of an aided course, I think).  I'm not sure I could do a 10k and not have to walk some right now but I think I may sign up for it and either "race" the first 5k for a time and then jog in the rest or just do my best and see how I do.  I'd be disappointed if I signed up for the 5k and then felt strong enough to do have the 10k by then.

Ok, back to work...

Since I missed getting out on Saturday to put my mileage to a new high for the week (double digits), I decided I needed to kick this week off right!  I ran my familiar run across the river and to the 31st Street bridge and back.  I ran the 2.12 miles to the bridge, stretched for a 1.5 mins then headed back.  Pace was decent, I think it was about 8:30-8:40 on the way out and a little slower on the way back (closer to 8:55 I think).  I paused for about 45 sec at the 3.2 point, then since I had a goal of running 4+ miles today, I kept going until I noticed the final 1/4mi beep letting me know I could stop.  But I didn't.  I pushed on for the last 0.02mi to the top of the hill.  No pain no gain!  LOL

The miles were tough towards the end, but I can feel myself getting stronger which is encouraging.  The legs still tire easily, though.

I finished off the night with Little Caesar's Pizza, soda, and watching one of my favorite movies of all time - Top Gun.  The worst part of that movie is the lovie dovie part.  The fast forward button comes in very handy.

Running group today was a speed workout.  First time back with the group - a couple new faces which was cool.  Went to Point State Park and ran the circular path that is almost exactly 1/4mi.  Ran 2x400m (1min rest between), 1x1000m (3min rest), 2x400m (1min rest between) to round it out.  Cool down lap and a jog back to the gym.

Times were decent (1:40, 1:41, 4:45, 1:45, 1:43) - nothing to write home to mom about, but not terribly shabby either.  No pain or discomfort except for the burn in the lungs.  :-)

Went to the track tonight with my brother in law, Brandon.  He's in from CA for a few days and so we took my son to the track so he could practice on a skateboard he just got.  It wasn't really running as much as jogging and talking with the occasional pushing Zayne or giving him some help/pointers.

Boy it was tough getting up this morning to go run.  It's not that I didn't want to, I really did.  I just couldn't get going.  This week has been a tough one on all fronts.  BUT, I didn't run last night as I had planned, so I knew I had to go.  I was initially planning to see how I did on a 10k practice run today just to prove to myself I could do it.  I ran along the Ohio River, so it was flat and weather was just about perfect. Felt good for a couple of miles, but then the fatigue set in.  I jogged/walked the rest of the miles.  Still finished with a decent 9:24 pace.  I think my goal for the 10k coming up will be sub-58:00.

Huge congrats to my buddy, Greg, who won the Montour Trail Half today with a PR of 1:12:46!!  I really wish I had been up to running this one again.  It's a great course and the weather was excellent.  Next year, for sure!

5k at the track, 20 sec rest/water break at 1.37mi.  Goal was to keep the HR around 160 and did a pretty good job of it.  26:05 (8:24 pace).  Finished the last .36 at 7:35 pace so that felt pretty good.  Not quite able to keep that up for another 5k though.

Had my health screening at work so I can get my premium discount for 2012.  I forgot to fast and ate some breakfast, but all my numbers came back "excellent" so I guess I'll live another day.  I wonder if they use the results to figure out who to fire before they cost a lot in doctor visits or something.

If I were a betting man and if Vegas had any interest in my running life, I'd have lost the farm today.  After a strong start to the week, I wasn't sure I'd get my runs in and hit double digits this week.  Then there's the 10k in a couple of weeks and not feeling confident I could finish it at this point.  So with a cold rainy morning, I took my running stuff to work with the plan of running the Boulder 10k program on the TM.  I could monitor my pace easily and if I wimped out and quit, I didn't have a long cold walk back to the gym.

I walked a few times, but only for about 20-30 sec each time.  Pushed it some on the flats, but tried to keep it at or above the 60:00 goal pace (6.2mph or 9:40) the rest of the time.  Even on the big 6% hill at the 9.75k mark.  That was killer.

Anyways, finished in 59:30 - second fastest I've run that program by a couple of seconds.  LOL  Burned 880 calories and had a net climb of 240ft or something like that.  I hadn't fueled well at all - ate probably 200 calories all day, so I didn't feel well afterwards.  I'm making up for that now.  A little sore, I'm tired, but satisfied I can finish the 10k coming up.

If I can do the TM program in 59:30, I'm hopeful I can hit the 58:00 goal with my short shorts on!

Correction, that's 340 ft. That's less than some of my 3mi runs! Let's see...I think that proper fueling and hydration is my best bet for a decent race, but I can't help but think a hot pink thong wouldn't give me an advantage, especially if it's windy.

Hang in there, freyguy! It seems like a lot, but over a marathon it should be easy.....right? I mean, what's cutting 15 sec per mile for 26.2? (totally kidding!!)

Missed my goal (58:00) by a little bit, but it started me racing again.  More to come...I need a nap.

Well rested and fed, I've had time to reflect on this race. Overall, I'm satisfied. I gave myself plenty of reasons to 'fail' in this race: it's an injury recovery race, training has been inconsistent with low mileage, I've got a sinus infection, I'll run the first 5k then just finish the rest, etc. There were points during the race I think I used each of these.

This race had almost 9500 registered for the 10k. Only 7865 completed it. It is definitely the biggest race I've done so far. I started about middle of the pack and didn't worry at all about trying to get around people. I was very relaxed through about 2.75mi then the legs started getting tired. I think I hit the halfway point at 26:00 or so. From there, I didn't worry about walking once in a while. I can't say I gave it 100%, more like 85% maybe.

There was a sea of runners through the whole race. Had I been shooting for a fast time, I would have been incredibly frustrated with the pace and not being able to get around people for much of the race. The race was very well done and I would run it again. The Highmark runners did great and it was fun to see so many employees there.

I was successful in not overdoing it, trying to go too fast, and didn't reinjure, so now it's time to get back to some serious, consistent training.

Update:
I think this is definitely a PR course based on the elevation map and good weather.  I'm assuming since this has a negative elevation that this is considered an "aided" course?

Another year, but can't say I'm any wiser.  After about 25, I think I've actually gotten less wise.  I knew everything there was to know back then and after I turned 40, I think the decline is accelerating.

I had hoped to do my 41 mi run today but the running gods just weren't with me today.  I would have settled for a 4.1 mi run but I further settled for a .41mi (or so) jog at North Park while we were taking family photos up there.  A friend of the family is a great photographer and since she's a college student she appreciated the money to come photograph our family.  She did great!  After photos, we went to Chipotle for my birthday dinner since it was my choice.  Love those burritos with tons of Tabasco on them!

Don't tell my wife I posted this pic.  She wasn't going to put any up on Facebook or anywhere until we had decided on whether to use one for our Christmas card pic.  So, if you get a Christmas card from me and she happens to have used this one, act like you never saw it before.  ;-)  For the pictures, my son agreed to spiking his mohawk turned fauxhawk.  He refuses to cut it off but won't let us spike it either.

Actually, I should say I am wiser. I only ran the 0.41. I wouldn't have been so sensible a year ago when I was *only* 40 and thought I knew everything.

I got down to the gym today with just enough time to get in a workout before I had to haul booty home to get to the Cub Scout Pack Meeting tonight.  Fortunately, I didn't have to do anything for it except show up in my scout uniform and help with the activities.  I only have one Bear scout this year and he's new so no awards yet, but he'll get some done soon!  Of course, I couldn't find my scout shirt...found it the next day in my closet where it was supposed to be.  I think there are gnomes that do things to make me feel crazy but I haven't proven that yet.

I hit the treadmill since I had to be close to my work email on my phone.  I'm getting really good at responding to emails while running on the treadmill!  I don't even have to stop or slow down! After typing that, that's really sad actually...

Anyways, warmed up walking for .25 mi @ 3% then ran a mile at what's my current 10k pace (9:30) @ 3%, increasing to 5% by the end.  Then started the Intervals program for 15 mins @ 2%.  I set the "rest" to 6.2mph (9:40) and the speed to 7.5mph (8:00).  Each period was a min, then the second to last speed period, I increased to 8.0mph (7:30), and the last I started at 8.3mph (7:13), reducing to 1% and increased every 15 sec to 8.7mph (6:53).  This was a pretty good workout, especially at the end, but it felt good to get some speed in there too.

Did my usual (old guy) stretching so I wouldn't be too sore tomorrow.

I'm not sure what changed, but tonight's run was what I've been waiting for! The rain and gusting wind started just 30 minutes before I decided to head out. It was cold and obviously wet, but the best run yet. It felt pretty easy, averaged about 9:10 on the way out but overall pace was 9:01 so I sped up on the way back. Although I feel like I took it really easy and I'm not all that tired and not sore at all, for some reason my (recovered) foot is rather sore tonight. I'll have to ice it well tonight and hopefully it will feel ok tomorrow. I was planning on an easy 3 tomorrow but I'll wait and see.

Day 1 of my company's Fall Football Challenge where every day we exercise 15+ mins, we score a "touchdown" - 6pts.  Any extra workouts or exercise in the same day earns us the "extra point."

Score 100 points between the 3rd and 30th and we're entered to win 4 Pittsburgh Steelers tickets.  This, along with the looming Dirt Monster race should keep me dedicated.

Well, I found out this week that when they say exercise 15+ min/day at the fitness center, they mean AT the fitness center. So, apparently, exercising at home doesn't count as a touchdown. A few of my friends are still counting them and doing the challenge, but I'm not going to "cheat." If I won the tickets I wouldn't feel right about it. Besides, they badge you in when you workout there. I highly doubt they'd check the records to verify, but maybe they would.

They have excellent participation at the gym so I don't think this is an attempt to get more people to use it. Who knows...

TOUCHDOWN with EXTRA POINT!  7pts, 93 to go!

Met up with my buddies Ken and Tim for a run over the Dirt Monster course.  I couldn't find my Garmin so we had to rely on Ken's navigation skills.  I think he got us off to a good start but we missed the switch backs somewhere and ended up short of the 5 mi.  Tim wore his Garmin so we knew we averaged around 11:15-11:30 pace, I think.  Pretty easy, but the feet were a little sore afterwards.  I just about tripped twice.  The second time, had a hand on the ground! Lift the feet, lift the feet!

Later in the afternoon, helped someone move.  That deserves an extra point!

TOUCHDOWN - No extra point!  13pts - 87 to go!

I didn't get a run in yesterday so even though it was late, I had just eaten, and was exhausted from terrible sleep last night, I needed my points or I won't make it!  I put my clothes on and told my wife I'd be back in 15 mins, just enough for the touchdown.  I drove up to a flat part of town and started running nice and easy thinking I'd do 2mi max.  I was feeling so good, I had to continue past the 1mi mark and go down the hill to the 1.5mi mark.  AP for this half - 8:48.  Not too bad.

I decided I wanted to negative split on the way back even though it was uphill, then flat with a short down grade at the very end.  At the top of the hill, AP was 9:02, first 1/2 mi split was 4:30.  Hit 4:22 and 4:11 for the next two 1/2mi splits.  Ended with a 13:03 (8:35 AP).  Felt pretty good, a little foot soreness toward the end.  I think it's my pretty worn shoes...

Went out for a nice 9pm run - 42F, drizzly with wind gusts of up to 30mph.  Wind wasn't as much fun, but otherwise, my ideal running weather and in the dark is even better!  Shorts, long sleeve tee, and light cotton gloves. Great run tonight. The first 1/2mi is uphill and I took it easy with the cooler weather and just warming up.  It felt like I was doing about 10:30-10:45 but read an even 5:00 so faster than I had thought or felt.

The rest was somewhat flat with some mild grades.  The last 1/2mi is downhill coming a different way.  I liked the course I took, but I only noticed one maybe 1/4mi where it was blowing with me.  I could tell because my hands started to sweat and I considered taking the gloves off.  Then it started blowing in my face or to my side and I reconsidered.

The last mile or so my (healed) left foot started hurting again.  The downhill pounding at the end didn't help even though I was holding back.  I'll ice it tonight, throw some Tiger Balm on and it should be better tomorrow...I hope!

Decent run tonight considering I haven't run in...let's see...a WEEK?!  Saturday is the Dirt Monster, so I'll run once between now and then and other days, just do some resting and "tapering." Putting in this huge mile weeks is just a killer.

I think I've put my last running miles on my #1 shoes.  I need to find a new pair to start swapping into the rotation.  I could feel the thinness of the shoes.  I love the shoe, but they're tough to find now that there's a new model out.  Time to go down to the running store and check out what's new.

After tonight, I feel OK about the race.  It will be interesting and if the rain keeps up, it will definitely be fun!  AP for this run was 9:32 so not too bad considering the hills and the foot pain which I'm quite certain is from my worn out shoes.

Since I didn't run yesterday for Halloween, here's a picture.  Oh, BTW, I provide a free service to get rid of your extra Halloween candy.  Just mail it on off and I'll take care of the rest.  No need to thank me, it's the least I can do for my FRB friends and their kids.

The best part of this race is that it benefits the OCD Foundation of Western PA and they had the largest preregistered group yet - 87.  They also had about 15 walkups, so they did OK considering this is their biggest fundraiser of the year.  The next best part was that my family volunteered again for the third year in a row.  The final best part is that I didn't take a DNF at the 3mi mark where the family was directing runners.

Weather was pretty nice, overcast but a chilly 29o.  We had to get there around 7:45am so the family could get in position along the route and get their marching orders.  They had to drive to back side of the trail so I didn't have anywhere to sit and keep warm.  I hung out talking with Terri from the Foundation until my buddy, Ken, arrived about 9:05am.  He ran it with me last year.  We waited for Tim to arrive a few minutes later and we started a little warmup jog.  They called all the racers down at about 9:20am, chatted about the course and we started on time at 9:30am.  I wish I had warmed up a bit more, but I don't know if it would have made much difference since it was freezing for those 10 mins, plus the 90 mins of just standing around before.

Tim lined up closer to the front, Ken and I towards the back.  A few minutes into the announcements, Tim came back saying he didn't feel very comfortable up there.  About 30 sec later, he left and went back up so I'm guessing he felt less uncomfortable towards the back with Ken and I.  :-)  I lost Ken in the first few minutes with the traffic and the narrow trail, but it was OK since I figured I'd catch him on the hills.  I had him in sight the entire time, but that first mile is a killer.  I didn't want to go out too fast not being very warmed up, and although my recovered foot was feeling fine (could have just been numb from the cold), the blister or corn in between the 4th and 5th toes of my other foot was killing me.  That pain never let up.  Oh, and I had just grabbed some socks out of the drawer and didn't think much about it - they were my light summer socks and within the first 1/4 mi, they had slipped down off my heel and around my arch.  I had my shoes tied pretty loosely, so that's likely the reason.  On the roads it doesn't happen since there's not a lot of sliding around in the shoe, but the trail proved differently.  Memorandum for next year, don't wear those socks.

The course was back to it's usual route, a bit different from last years when they had to make a few changes to accommodate some repairs that were in process.

Splits were:  11:10, 8:42, 11:31, 10:01, 11:21

Last year, I stuck with Ken since it was his first race and went at his pace until about the 4mi mark and then I left him and picked up the pace.  I was in a lot better shape last year.  This year I knew would be different.

The gun went off and Tim took off with the lead 10 or so.  I lost sight of him pretty quickly.  He's been running a lot longer than Ken or I and is about 8 years younger so I knew he wasn't my competition and I'm glad he didn't hang back with us.  The first mile is probably the toughest.  It is mostly uphill, with a 220' 1/4mi climb at the end of that first mile.  I walked part of that, but Ken kept going and I was losing sight of him.  There were about 5 of us in a row walking a portion of that hill, we were all towards the back and I felt like it was a death march.  Legs were tired already, and not having much competitive drive today didn't help.  My expectations were low going into this race and were getting lower by the step at this point.

After the first mile, it's mostly downhill so I was feeling a little better, but still wasn't gaining on Ken.  My legs just weren't turning over like I wanted them to, but I was also pretty concerned about watching my step since the course was very heavily covered by leaves this year so it was hard to see the roots and rocks.

The third mile was mostly uphill again and is where I saw the family.  It was nice to see them and get high fives.  I had heard them screaming, cheering Ken on and although I couldn't see him, I knew he wasn't too far ahead at that point.  The desire to quit was there, especially after the mile of climbing and I was so far back in the pack (there were maybe a handful of people behind me), but I decided to push on and just finish it, knowing the rest of the race was rolling hills to downhill.

I saw Ken ahead when I got to the water stop, I grabbed some water quickly, then headed out.  I wasn't feeling confident that I'd catch him, but knew he'd probably be getting tired by now.  I caught up to him toward the end of the 4th mile.  I was feeling a lot better and felt like my normal running self during this 4th mile and could have passed him and kept going but I didn't really care about my time at this point, so I ran with him for a bit.  He was struggling.  I was telling him about last night and how my son and I had "dude time" and we had gotten Burger King and watched Captain America.  Right at that moment, he didn't see a rock under the leaves and rolled his ankle pretty bad.  We stopped and walked for 45 sec or so then he thought he could run it in.

We took it slow the rest of the way in which is probably a good thing for me since that last 1/2 mi is about a 200' drop and I got going way too fast and out of control last year down that stretch.  This year, I would have tried to make up time again and would have definitely hurt myself on a rock or root.  I let Ken through the chute in front of me, so he technically beat me this year.

Tim did pretty well coming in at about 47:xx.  He said he went out a little fast, but really liked the race and course.  Ken and I snuck in just under the 53:00 mark.  A little slower than last year, but still better than my low expectation goal of 55:00.

I'm still feeling a bit disappointed that I wasn't better prepared this year, but it was still a good time and there's always next year!

Good job, a lot of complications in that race. I can imagine it is quite hazardous trying to run a trail course with any sort of speed, my legs at least aren't limber enough for all of the twists and turns. Congratulations, and great sportsmanship for running it in with Ken.

Pickle - Yes, I finished it with my socks like that. I considered stopping, but I'm pretty sure they would have fallen down again within a mile. I was waiting for the rubbing to begin, but it didn't so I didn't worry about it. Ken's ankle was pretty bruised & swollen enough to have his wife tell him to go to the doctor but he's a real man and didn't give in to the pressure.

Flat - I really do enjoy running trails, you can get a great workout without feeling like you have to run it super fast. You just have to be watching your foot placement the whole time.

Joe - Thanks. The hill was bad, but it was worse than last year because I'm still making my comeback. More hill work and strengthening workouts should flatten that hill next year.

You're all very kind to comment when I only get on the blog to post my occasional workout and ignore all the killer stuff you guys are doing. I hope to be better about following my FRB friends again one day soon. Thank you for the support!
