Coldwater Canyon above my house climbing up to the 8,700 level.

An interesting day to say the least. About a year ago I noticed a dramatic decrease in my ability to train any speed. Actually in my ability to recover from hard training. I pretty much attributed it to overtraining. I just shifted gears into some other things like more trail running and picked up surfing. Really didn't miss the road stuff that much, there was just so much else to do. In March I had a series of blood work done for a new life insurance policy. The tests came back with some issues, markers I guess for bacterial infections in the blood. White count through the roof. So over the last several months when I had a spare hour, I've been back in for more tests. Hate doctors and stuff. Last week I got a call from the specialist that they had a fairly good idea it was Lyme disease. What? Sure enough today results were back and it's a 99.9% So I'm on some kind of antibiotic from hell now, along with a few other things.

I've no idea if this affected my running. But I do know that as serious runners we tend to know our bodies better than the average person. If you know something is off, you better get it checked out. This process of getting rid of this from my system will take a few months. Would have been much quicker a year ago.

Sorry to hear about the Lyme Disease issue. There is a good article about Lyme Disease in the last issue of Runner's World (July issue I think). It goes into some detail about the treatment and prognosis that should get you thinking.

Andy had Lyme's a couple years ago and they proscribed prednisone which makes you bloated and fat and jacks your appetite through the roof. It took the doctor's here a long time to diagnose it because we don't see it too much because of our lack of ticks.

I'm guessing you got it trail running in a Central American jungle of something like that.

And yet with the lack of speed you still managed to beat me by over 2 minutes on the downhill dash!?!?

That's one of my prescriptions, great...

I'm skeptical about it actually affecting my running. But it definitely affected fatigue levels.

Seriously, google "prednisone side effects".

My family has had experience with Prednisone in the past. A useful drug but definitely has some drawbacks..

Get well soon Steve.

I think running performance and fatigue are pretty highly correlated :-)

I've heard anecdotes of people really struggling w/ running for a long time (just feeling "off") and then eventually getting tested for Lyme's and that being the problem.

Prednisone sucks but you gotta get it treated somehow.

The change I noticed last year was a complete lack of ability to recover from any faster training. 80 could leave me flay for a week. A 50 could change how I felt for a month. But that's what overtraining does too. Nervous system as well as anything physical. I really don't know, there's a lot of speculation by doctors about any of Lyme ' s effects. This is what they call long term stage 3, where they can suspect nervous system issues. When I say I don't know if it affected my running, I mean the racing part. I'm fairly certain it changed my training. That then, would affect racing. It's interesting that I can pick up a prescription in Mexico, an actual vaccination against future problems, which the US will not approve. I could get it this weekend while in Cabo. But in any case it's kind of a good lesson. If something is up with your training don't just ignore it. Take the time to figure out what it is.

Rap, I just googled the side effects. That's nuts.
