I have raised two running children, one competitive and one not.

I have learned to run in ice and snow and I don't complain.

Short-Term Running Goals:

Work towards a faster marathon by Spring 2012.

Get my 5K down to 21:30.

Place in my division at duathlon and triathlon.

Train for biathlon.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Joining Forrest Gump

33 degrees at 7:49 am.  Forgot my gloves and hat.  Forgot to wear longer pants too.  Had coffee with husband and daughter at a bakery and then ran the interurban.  It was supposed to be 40 minutes easy, then 6X50-100m strides, FAST.  The 40 easy minutes sounded pretty boring, so I took off into the "100 acre woods", a tangled mass of semi-trails and knee deep mud.  Got lost, found the main interurban again at exactly 37 minutes, after being chased by a large and potentially dangerous black dog with large teeth.  I didn't feel like measuring and marking a section of trail, so I just did the strides by feel for distance.  Strangely enough, 4 of them came out at exactly .07 (100m would be .06).  The last two were .05 and .06.  I guess I'm pretty good at guessing distance.  I just started and stopped when I felt like it and jogged about 15 seconds in between, just long enough to stop and restart the watch.

AP on the 40 minute run was 9:51, slowed by debris and mud.  Mile pace times on the strides were:  6:11, 5:38, 5:34, 5:34, 5:58, and 5:16.  They felt like hard effort, but not quite all out.

Sunny day here; I think I'll head outside and clean up my yard and collect some vitamin D!   PM update:  Yard work done in time to get an hour of biking in!

Nice run!! Great pace on your strides! I never really understood what "strides" are supposed to be.

Good luck collecting the vitamin D! We are stuck under cloud cover again :(

NICE run and strides!

THANKS for the stride distance conversion. My schedule calls for 100m strides alot and I often wonder how far to do those on the road or trail. It's so cool that you are good at guessing by feel. Do you hit the lap button for each interval or stop button during the recovery jog? Just wonder how you get your mile pace times for the strides. Thanks! VERY AWESOME run!

Smooth: I time each stride as a separate run entry. When I start, I hit the timer start, when I stop that stride, I hit the stop and enter that stride. This morning I wasn't concerned about how fast they were, so I didn't even look at the data before launching into the next stride. So, when I got home and downloaded from Garmin, I had 6 separate mini "runs", each with its own distance, time, and mile pace. There may be an easier way to do it, but I don't know it. When I have to do an interval (like a 200m), where I want it to be exact, I set my auto lap feature to .13 miles and record each 200m run as a separate entry.

Lori: I don't understand "strides" either. I suppose I was doing them today because its a cut back week and they are tiny bursts of speed, so the muscles don't forget during this relatively easy time. Just my guess.
