Moderately difficult hike, sometimes with light pack and sometimes without it, in West Virginia. We left our packs and equipment at the camping spot and set off for 7 miles out and 7 miles back to the site, very fast hiking, we were doing less than 3 miles an hour. Fun times.

Backpacking out of our camping spot in West Virginia, 8 miles back to the car, with backpacks heavy but almost all the water gone so not as bad as before at all - mostly downhill but a few hills too. Then when I got back home I went out for a 6-mile easy run - the day was too nice to pass. My shin pain is still there but not too bad at all. I dream that one day it is completely gone!!! It'll happen, I know it! A great day overall, great ending of the 3-day backpacking trip. I feel already a little lighter, like my clothes aren't as tight as before. I'm going to weigh myself tomorrow morning... yikes!

Short run after work by Anacostia park and around RFK stadium, back by the Congressional Cemetery. Felt I could go faster and further but brought my neighbor's dog, Cushlin, with me and she was very tired, poor thing - she's not used to running... But we made it back safe. Felt really good the entire time - shins not bothering much.

7.3 miles with Georgetown Running group, out on Key Bridge and back on 14th Street/395 bridge. Went out fast (8 min/mile) for first 4 miles, then slowed down to probably 9 min/mile. Felt really good. Shins hurt only a little.

Lunch run from office, 4.1 easy miles with Mike, out the C&O canal, cross Key bridge, then on Mt. Vernon trail, cross the Memorial Bridge, back to office, then I did a little more around Georgetown. Went out really easy cause Mike isn't in great shape - had good conversation with Mike about training for our upcoming 10k that we're all doing with a bunch of people from the office, and about his twins, and about his weight loss success! The guy lost 60 lbs., starting by biking 10 miles to work every day and back, as soon as his wife found out she was pregnant. Very moving. He's younger than me but more inexperienced as a runner, so I feel I have some stuff to teach him (like not to run too fast or too far too soon, stretching techniques, etc.), a lot of things I learned from other more experienced runners on this blog too! Now I'm off to the beach for the weekend - looking forward to doing some barefoot running on the sand, but not too much. A few years ago I got tendonitis that way... I'm planning on trading barefoot beach running with trail running.

To any St. George runner that reads this, what do you guys do to run in the summer? Do you still run outside when it's super hot, or do you use treadmills? Here in DC it can get quite hot and humid, but typically I manage to run outside no matter what. Some don't think it's healthy, not only because of the heat but also the pollution levels...

Camping weekend in Assateague Island! Gorgeous weather all day. The guys left to go to Frontier Town, a kid's amusement park a few miles away. I was good and decided to stay and go for a 2-hour run. I left the campsite and ran on the bike path for 25 minutes, then heard the rangers giving warning to everyone that a tornado warning was in effect in our area! So, I had to cut my run short to try to get back to camp and save our stuff from getting blown away or soaked! I took off my shoes and ran back on the sand. So nice! I ran for about 1 hour total, probably around 6 miles, against the wind! Got to the campsite in time to wrap everything in the tents in plastic, and then the winds were insane, everything was flying away but I was able to keep everything from getting too far... all by myself, I managed to switch back and forth between the three tents, staking them down one by one and then moving to the next one as soon as it was flying away, then moving to the next one... crazy! Rained lots. Then it calmed down. Everyone wanted to leave cause the sand was wet, but I stayed for the night. It wasn't bad at all! Overall, a nice run, though not as long as I wanted it.
