Are you still struggling with shin pain?

From Aaron-PSU on Thu, May 29, 2008 at 21:16:31

I found that if you freeze little dixie cups of water and rub them on your shins a few times a day it really helps after about a week. I love running downtown...especially near the mall.

Yes, shin pain is still there... seems to get worse when I try to increase distance/speed... so I just have to do it slowly, but I think I'll be OK.

I've been icing the shins several times a day for the past few months and though it helps, the pain always comes back... thanks for the advice though!

I live on Capitol Hill and work in Georgetown, so I'm very lucky to have the mall area as my back yard. Fairfax has some beautiful areas too though!

I use to deal with shin splints all the time. When I became a massage theripst I learned how to take care of them and don't usually get them anymore. I would massage the area as deep as you can every day or at least a couple of times a week. It will hurt at first but should get better the more you do it. You can massage them after you ice and it won't hurt as bad.

Also if your not start doing some stretches. I like doing downward dog (a yoga move) because if you do it right you get a good stretch from your neck all the way down your back side to your achilles.

Massaging is something that I haven't been doing - I will take your advice on that, Josse, and hope it will help. I do stretch a lot, and yes, the downward dog feels great! Thank you!

Something I forgot to mention is when you have a lingering injury I like to do an ice/heat thing. Ice for 5 mins and then do heat for 5 mins repeat if you have time. Do this a couple times a day everyday. this will increase circulation to the area.
