In addition to turning 41 on Saturday, I also became a clydesdale.  I started my running journey 8 1/2 years ago at 220 pounds and was able to get down to 170.  I never thought I would see 200 again.  The last 2 years have been a steady increase.  I feel like I have become very undisciplined and am not sure how to pull myself out of this mess.  I have become one of those people who complain about their physical status but nothing to correct it.  Looking for any advice on how to get my head back in the right place.

Based on some of our long run chats, one thing to try is the soda.

I won't get into the whole regular vs. diet soda thing, but I will say this; when my brother in law switched from Dr. Pepper to diet coke, he dropped like 15 pounds. One of the most cherished mantras of the weight loss people is "Don't drink your calories." That might be some low hanging fruit.

Have you ruled out any metabolic/thyroid type problems?

I was going to ask about the thyroid thing. I agree on "don't drink your calories". With that said, I think even diet soda is not good for ya. Maynard cut out soda alone and he dropped over 15 lbs.

Happy belated birthday! :)

Hey Andy - first off, happy birthday!

I know what you are saying. I've been fighting the weight the past two years as well. I don't know the answers, but maybe try something new. Throw some biking into the mix. If you work it hard, even a crappy bike can be a killer workout.

I hear that the 40s are A-W-E-S-O-M-E!!!!

Just throwing some ideas out there (things that may or may not work for you):

1. Hanging up a picture/poster of a hot guy with a fab body! Seriously ... I always look at pics of hot women and say: "Dang, I want a tummy like that." Perhaps one on the refrigerator (I'm sure Becky would not mind) ... one by the television ... or wherever!!!

2. Pick up a sport that you think is extremely cool even if it scares you to death. For example: mountain biking pushed me completely out of my comfort zone. But it pushed my body differently. Worked muscles that weren't used to be pushed.

3. Get a personal trainer that knows his/her stuff!

Just some ideas!!! :)

(Oh yeah ... and of course, lots of fruits/veggies and water! :))

Hang in there!!! You are one of the coolest guys I know!!! :)
