The one solid lesson I have learned this past year is that nothing ever goes as planned. A few months ago I bought a plane ticket to Switzerland with the goal of hiking the entire Mont Blanc Circuit. It was my reward for enduring my hip surgery/recovery thing and acted as some serious motivation to getting solid and strong. And well three weeks ago my feet hurt with the first few steps in the morning and now yesterday I couldn't even hike 2 miles. I would call the heel pain quite crippling and it isn't getting any better so time to start thinking about what the heck I am going to do in 3 weeks. As far as I see it I have 3 options.

1) Suck it up. Maybe I am just a wuss. Do trip as planned. Wash down lots of ibuprofen with red wine.

2) Beach vacation. Europe is a big place. There has to be something besides trekking Mont Blanc that I would enjoy.

3) Eat my plane ticket. Honestly I am not really a spend all day in museums kind of person so not going is a real option for me right now. I am using all my vacation time to do this trip so if I can't do the kind of trip I want to do, why go? I think I might be happier spending a long weekend riding my bike in the Sawtooths and soaking in the Salmon River than sitting on my butt in Europe.

Hopefully the feets get magically better in the next week and I won't have to make any decision at all :)

I would do everything I could to fix it - hope for plan A, make a backup plan just in case... but don't eat that ticket!

Its a shame southwest doesn't fly to europe

Thanks for the advice Jake! I had to write that all out to realize how pathetic my thinking is :) I have been slightly falling into the feeling sorry for myself place and I need out now!

This is not a great analogy, BUT its the only one I can think of right now.

A week before we went to Duluth, Andrea had to pull out of the Portland Track Festival and it seemed like all hope was lost for the 1/2 Champs. And then 7 days later she ran 1:17. So... don't give up yet!!

But I have to hike 12-18 miles/day for 9 days :) and I haven't hiked since the 4th. I just don't want to screw myself up even more than I have already managed to. To the museums I go...

Oh, I agree that the hiking plan might be a bad idea...

I am looking into bike tours, but they are soooooooo expensive it is a joke! Buying night splints now...

Taping my arches really helps my pf. The strassburg sock, icing, golf ball rolling and ibuprofen have also helped me. I've had it since last august. I say go! You might decide not to hike, but there are so many things you could do instead to celebrate your healthy hip. Cold laser treatment really helped with my pf pain too.

I'd rather break my foot w/ a hammer than go to museums. Let's get you all healed up!!!

Not sure what your injury is, but often heel pain is associated with weak calves, something that seems pretty right up your ally considering your recovery from the surgery and all. Starting doing calf raises every day, lots! Then get the inflammation down in the heel pain and you'll be good to go. Don't give up yet.

Got to go to Europe. If you cant do all the hiking...get down to the Mediterranean somehow...beautiful beaches ...agree though... museum life a let down. Hope it all comes through...

From Lulu Walls on Tue, Jul 31, 2012 at 09:59:02 from 155.100.212.98

Thanks y'all! I now have night splints, am doing calf raises 10 times a day, and regaining some stoke.

@gdoc - Can you recommend anywhere specific in the Mediterranean? I've been to Cinque Terre and Sorrento. I like small, chill places and need ideas :)
