Arrived in Thailand in late January, woefully out of shape. My jean size was a tight 32. I rented an apartment in Chiang Mai for 3 months, and decided to start running and exercising at the fitness park and Municipal Stadium. Yesterday I got into my jeans for the flight to Bali and the pants were falling down, barely staying on my hips. When I had to remove my belt at the airport security check point I had to hold my pants up with hand  - haha - success!

I feel amazing now, fit, the fat melting off my gut. I usually run for 45 minutes to an hour, and do 2 hours of strength exercises. As I walked back to the hotel this morning a man on a scooter said hello as I passed and made a motion with his arms, asking if I had been running - I must have looked sweaty and gross, or had that running glow going. I nodded my head and said hello. I few minutes later down the road the same guy stops his scooter next to me and starts talking running - "you have no fat, I try to be that way". I had to laugh at that, he should have seen me 14 weeks ago.

Ok, this was just an update because Ben left a message recently. Ben, hope all is well!

I don't race anymore, but run all the time. No need to keep track of my mileage, so most likely I won't make many entries here.

Glad to hear the update, man. Been missing following you. I am trying to get in shape too. I reached a high point (or rather low point) weighing in at 241 pounds. I have since dropped 22 to 219, but still have a long way to go. Slow and steady. I am participating in a 120 day challenge to run at least 1 mile every day. Today was Day #53. Onwards and upwards! Keep in touch,

Benn

Can't believe how lazy I am once it started getting colder. I run 2 miles, stop to do some exercises, then walk home. I think I need a break anyways, since I was kicking butt all year until October.

When I returned to the states in June via Vegas I visited Eugene, OR, now I live there! Life is a dream...

Hey JD, good to see you :)

I got into good shape this year when I was in SE Asia, was running up Spencer Mt. here in Eugene until it got colder in October, now I am being lazy. I think I will start logging miles here again to keep me motivated this winter!

From JD on Thu, Nov 15, 2012 at 12:24:36 from 70.96.78.188

Asia - nice! yeah the transition from ideal running weather to winter can be harsh. i look forward to seeing your progress. you motivated me to try out a little streak this year :-)

I seem to be running in the future here - I accidentally placed Wednesday's run in Thurday's box, so Thursday's run goes into Friday's box - no worries, when I take a day off things will even out :)

How much easier it is to run when the sun is out and it is 55 degrees! I learned when in Asia that I love 95 and humid everyday, I can run in that forever - the muscles bake and the bones soften and the skin glistens with sweat. Whole lot better than 5 layers and snot dribbling down my cheeks.

Ran 5 miles on the Amazon/rexius trail with the final 7 minutes run at fast speed. If it rains tomorrow I will take a day off.

Lazy, lazy, lazy! Ran 1/2 mile to park and ran a few fast loops on the 400m dirt circle. Did pull ups after each loop. Walked to Albertson's after to get groceries. Lazy lazy lazy!

5 miles on the Amazon/Rexius Trail. A bit of misty rain was falling, and sometimes the sun peaked out. Ran toward a large rainbow at the end of the run - 3 black crows swooped under the rainbow - cawww!! Not too cold, around 50. Did some monkey bar exercises after and then walked to Market of Choice and Sunrise Asian to buy some food. As I reached the exit of Market of Choice a group of people were hesitating because the rain was coming down hard. I put my paper bag full of groceries down and readjusted my grip and an employee nearby asked if I wanted a piece of plastic covering for the bag. I gladly accepted, tipped him a dollar, and happily walked the wet mile home.

Ran to the park and did a few fast laps around the dirt track, stopping after each loop to do pullups and pushups. Walked to the grocery store after and bought some food. Sunny and moderate - beautiful day!

Ran the Amazon/Rexius trail at a hard pace. Spencer Butte was impressively dark and moody today. After did monkey bar exercises then stopped at Sunshine to get $2 sushi and rice pockets and coconut water for lunch.

Got up at 5:40, meditated for 30 minutes, then went for a run on the Amazon/Rexius Trail as the sun was rising - fog and gray colors everywhere, very beautiful. Did some exercises, bought food at the market, then walked home.

Surprising motivation and energy today. Raining, but it felt refreshing and fun to be sloshing around the Amazon/Rexius trail. Did some exercises then walked to the market. Fun day.

Ran to the park and did 6 hard loops on the dirt trail. Starting to get my legs back, but I also gained some weight from eating too much sugar, time to cut that out, blahhh

3 miles on Amazon/Rexius trail, felt sluggish, I think it is because I am eating too much sugar. Will try to cut out sugar, one day at a time. I will begin recording sugar input here as a way to keep myself in check - goal today, no sweets!

Energy a little higher, but didn't feel like running.

Day 3 of no sweets.

Easy MilesMarathon Pace MilesThreshold MilesVO2 Max MilesTotal Distance
4.000.002.000.006.00

Went to bed kind of late yesterday because I watched a DVD about losers. I knew I was going to get up late because of that, but I woke at dawn, just as the gray clouds were brightening my skylight. Instead of digging deeper into the trenches of my bed, I felt energy flowing through me. I felt like running, and even though I put in a short one yesterday, I could not resist, so not caring if it was raining or cold, I got up, quickly washed and dressed, and was out the door. Weather was calm, about 45 degrees, and I felt it was going to be a good day - high energy, fresh legs, and a good breathing pattern. Ran my usual route on the Amazon/Rexius Trail, but extended it an extra mile, and when I stopped after a hard final two miles I immediately recovered normal breathing as if I had not run at all.

So I am thinking cutting sweets out of my diet may be one cause of the high energy. That gives me extra motivation to refrain, but it is odd how just a simple day count that I am doing here is enough to keep me going. Today is day four of no sweets - so far, so good!

I am going to test my theory of day counting, and begin keeping track of my meditation days. Goal is to meditate a  minimum of 30 minutes each day. I began doing this about 2 weeks ago, so I will estimate this is day 14.

Another hard 6 loops around the dirt trail at the park. After each loop I did a set of pullups and pushups. Energy was above average, the no sweet streak is helping.

Woke up with decent energy, when I stepped outdoors to walk to the laundry room noticed it was warmer than usual (mid 50's), so when I finished doing laundry and 40 minutes meditation I went for my normal 5 miler on the Amazon/Rexius Trail.

Everything was clicking again, running faster with less effort, so the hard 300m loops I have been doing at the park is beginning to benefit my long distance fitness. Ran the last mile hard, recovered quickly, did some muscle exercises, walked to the market for food, then walked home.

Meditation is altering my head, my thoughts are getting into a different space, I am once again changing and growing.

After 1 week of no sweets, my body is regulating energy more efficiently.

Ran to St Vinneys thrift store, only a short distance, but I'm not training for a race so it felt good enough for the day. Bought a few books - Emerson, Thoreau, two by Salinger, and an old one by Marcus Aurelius. Picked up a pair of gray Converse All Stars for $7.50, good for walking. I love my Brooks Mach XI shoes for hiking and urban walking, but I am on my last pair and they will soon be unwearable. The newer versions don't look so hot.

Another easy, lazy run. Feels good to get out in the cool morning, just don't have motivation to push very hard  right now. This is my break period, so remaining at minimum fitness level is the goal for the winter.

Bought a pair of Mizuno Kaze 6 Cross Country shoes at RunningWarehouse.com for $25. I have some money in my Paypal account from a few autumn writing gigs, happy that the website accepts Paypal, if I like the shoes I will buy a 2nd pair. Did the same for the Mach XI's, $25 sale price and they are my favorite shoe, too bad they don't make them anymore. Business makes a great shoe, then destroys design after 1 year?

Stayed indoors pondering questions of a philosophical nature. Grabbed An American Tragedy by Dreiser off the shelf, before beginning I checked to see what Wickipedia had to say about it. Ended up at the wicki pages of the murder trial the story was based on, which led to an article in the NY Times from 1906 which discussed the case with printed excerpts of the love letters.

I can't decide if its better to be steeped in an illusion proven by fact, or remain empty and live from the gut.
