Did my long run today, because Friday I have to work late and there's now way I would be able to get up early and run long Saturday. I wouldn't be able to sleep in and do the run after that, because I have too many things to do. Install a new dishwasher, and finish the drywall in our downstairs bathroom.

The weather was awful 20 degrees with the wind between 35 to 43mph constant from the Southwest (I mean constant I can remember a time where it hasn't at least let up a bit). This made the temperature be like 13 degrees. In the run I tried running down alley's to block the wind, but that really didn't help much. I ran most of the run in the wind and at times it was hard, but I did pretty good. I just ran a nice easy 6:50 to 7 minute mile pace. I ran 20.5 miles at an overall 7:03 pace in 2:24. The wind picked up at some points where I ran in a farm area where the wind wasn't being block from any directions and it would knock you back.

I didn't drink anything or eat anything during the ran. Good experiment to try and use the inter fat muscles when Carbs are depleted. I was definitely thirsty after the run, (no brainer on that one).

I would have to say with the wind and the cold this is probably the hardest long run I've done in a while. My hands, face were frozen by the time I got home. I picked up the last mile a bit and ran a 6:50 to finish. The course was pretty much flat to and a lot of turns to prepare for Salt Lake.

Lunch: I had to go get something to eat so I just ran to the closest convenience store to my work. I wanted to see how my legs responded after the 20 miler. I did just 1.6 miles at a 7:30 pace.

You are an animal to run in this wind! I can still barely walk without getting dizzy, and you are running in a hurricane on ice!

Be careful, but great run!

From Scott Zincone on Thu, Mar 27, 2008 at 16:27:03

Great running, especially in such brutal weather. Do NOT check out my blog today about our weather or you will be jealous.

But I would gladly give you 20 degrees extra now if you could take away 20 degrees from me this Summer.

By the way, I was following your blog through your achilles injury. It was very inspirational to read how you were able to recover while still training.

From wheakory on Thu, Mar 27, 2008 at 17:17:55

Scott - Thanks for your comments. The achilles was a weird experience. I did do a lot of stretching when it was injured and I think that helped me to still train a bit.

Sometimes determination will make you overcome issues. I think a positive outlook also helps you and your nervous system to think that this injury can't stop you.

From Paul Ivory on Thu, Mar 27, 2008 at 20:48:05

Kory, is has all been said in many of your blog entries, but you are an animal. It looks like the achilles injury sure didn't slow you down for long. Great running. Best to you on your upcoming races.

From Adam RW on Thu, Mar 27, 2008 at 21:30:58

Great run today Kory. With everything you've had going on this week it was great that you were able to get out there and run so solid, especially with that weather. I don't think you'll have a problem at SLC, you are ready!

From wheakory on Thu, Mar 27, 2008 at 22:58:23

Paul - the weather was bad and I almost decided to quit, because I was getting so cold from the wind.

Adam - I think I'm ready for SLC, but I don't think I'm ready for a 2:35. Maybe a 2:40, or maybe I can feed off your energy if I can keep up with you at the start.

From JohnK on Fri, Mar 28, 2008 at 08:08:49

Extremely impressive run! I agree with others, you are ready for a strong marathon and I'm glad the Achilles problem is a thing of the past.

From Adam RW on Fri, Mar 28, 2008 at 08:21:14

Kory, No worries about that. I'm not sure if I'm ready for a 2:35 either. I'm seriously considering starting at 2:40 pace through the half and then if I'm feeling good going from there. In any case with the paces you've been running your workouts it looks like it will be me feeding off your energy at the start.
